CASEY: Rd 17 BYE

The domestic airlines must love the AFL/VFL format. Must be a real bunfight when the contract is up for renewel.  Rugby is small fry in comparison.

They seem to have a bye every third week.....

Think it's only 3 in season plus the weird finals which gives another bye.

This is the system that the AFL clubs wanted... why... I've no idea

If you want to involve non AFL sides I favour a conference system including SA and WA. Allow for a few cross conference games if the budget allows. Finals could be cross conference (8 highest teams) or intra conference with the two conference winners playing off. Perhaps GF to be played in Adelaide or Perth where I think the locals and the State Government would pump some money in

As an aside, and it doesn't worry me in the slightest, but I am always amazed at the very low crowds at VFL. Very good standard of footy, you get to see the up and comers, have a kick on ground, very cheap. Extremely good crowd behaviour as well..real family atmosphere.

Used to think the same myself until I realised a few years back... they don't really want bigger crowds.... as increased crowds mean extra facilities (toilets etc), more ground security etc. Some grounds like Punt Rd are aggressively anti-crowds with narrow viewing space and blocked off areas. Port and Box Hill are a nice balance with grassed hills and old style grandstands

Agree though it is an enjoyable day with a little winter sunshine

In a competition with 21 teams, how on earth do 9 teams have a bye??

Because this “competition” has become a circus

Go Grundy..

Good opportunity for him to work on his forward craft.

Actually, a solid weekend of proper handball drills so that he can punch them out a bit harder than I can would be good. Got to stop doing them while sitting on a wheeled swivel chair on a lino floor.

Casey playing a scratchie against St Kilda this weekend. Sandy I'm guessing?

Thanks for the heads up. Wonder if anyone has an idea of exactly where and when? Possibly Casey rather than Sandy IMO because of the ground size or alternatively, at RSEA Park, Moorabbin where they sometimes play the Under 18s comp games.

It would be nice to hear from the club re when and where.

How stupid is the VFL concept that produces all these byes? So often players dropped or coming back from injury cannot play because of this terrible system. So stupid that Casey and the saints have organised a game outside of the competition so their respective players do not sit around playing tidally winks in July.

I get the frustration with the VFL fixture, but I have to hand it to the Club. Organising a match with another club in the finals window is terrific for the morale of players trying to break into the seniors.

Anyone know where and when this is?  Any reports much appreciated.

I'm not really a fan of the current VFL with it's interstate teams.

You would think after COVID-19 they can go back to their local state leagues?

Would love to see a few of the "old" VFA/VFL clubs return.

Bring back Brunswick, Traralgon, Bendigo, Northcote, Camberwell, North Ballarat, Caulfield, Prahran, Oakleigh, Yarraville, Brighton, Sunshine, Dandenong, Kilsyth, Berwick, Waverley, even Fitzroy and South Melbourne.

Unfortunately, I understand it is a matter of money and resources.

Seemingly Casey is having a practice match on Sunday.Has a team been announced yet?

This is the issue when the VFL comp is running a different comp vs the afl with their own byes, how are players getting dropped meant to go back & work on their craft??

Nice of the club to let us mugs know when and where this game was being played. Will hope that they give us feedback on the outcome?

“However, he did play in Casey's practice match against St Kilda's reserves on Saturday, July 15 at Casey Fields, kicking one goal, gathering 16 possessions and taking six marks.”

That’s not necessarily indicative of him struggling while being tried in a new position.

Six marks, sixteen possessions and a goal as a forward is nothing to sneeze at.

Different level obviously, but his replacement, jvr, had eight possessions, two marks and didn't bother the scorer.

And BB one goal , 6 disposals and 3 marks - hardly setting the world on fire as a tall key forward

For the record JVR had 7 hit outs vs 1 for BB

This is the reason I believe Brodie has every chance to still get back into this team and contribute at least as much as each of BB or JVR as a tall forward - he is too good of a footballer not to

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
