Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

If Lever starts sprinting straight away the ump would have been forced to call 50 but he jogs/runs for the first part and then sprints once Lord starts to slow down

Shouldn’t matter - he needed to be more blatant about it.

Port knew to put two or three players directly behind the pack May was kicking to, to either receive the ball knocked outover the top or the contested ball they won when it was fed out to them.

Exactly. Which is why it’s a great tactic 7/9 of the time. And maybe make those other two two in a row to keep ‘em guessing ffs. But to go 100% or just didn’t work at all tonight. Even more in the wet.

With all due respect there's no way any of them wouldve paid another 50 Neitz

Handed them 3 questionable shots at goal from frees inside 50 and a payed a dropped mark that clearly hit the deck.

One of those questionable frees was clearly incorrect disposal but instead was paid HTM.

They made up the interpretation of the rules as they went along to ensure Port were given every opportunity to win the match

Their mission was successful.  Kenny's jump for joy at the end should've instead seen him running up to each of the umps and giving them each a huge hug and kiss on the cheek for a job well done!

X2. Honestly if we weren't a decent team I wouldn't watch football anymore it's just a constant roll of the dice with every contest now.

Me too. It’s a horrendous blight on the game, and frankly kills my enjoyment dead too often. And what does the AFL do about it?…………………….

Blaming the umpire is just the feel-better option.

We are *** **** in the wet, it doesn't suit us one bit. Our forward line is a mess and massively underperforming. Look at the top teams and their forward lines and then ours, not a single player aside from Chandler is actually stringing good games together.

I would hate to see what we would look like without 2 of the best midfielders in the comp in this team.

Collingwood will destroy us on Kings Birthday.

Except for the third quarter. It’s perplexing I know…

Don’t know about the rest of you but I took the close loss well. Called the dancing Ken Hinkley a Karmichael Hunt then threw the TV remote 🤣🤣🤣

In the heat of the loss I was filthy about the umpiring but the reality is we played only a qtr & a bit of decent footy. Can’t expect to win over there doing that.

Our forward line remains yuck. Sadly Chandler, Pickett, Spargo & ANB all had bad nights, and were not sighted at the fall of the ball.

Not sure how you can have the cattle we do but get smashed in clearances…something isn’t working.

You can’t blame the umpires when you’re going 0-10 in clearances and letting damaging opponents rack up 40 touches. You can’t blame the umpires for JVR hitting Finlayson high or giving away a high free kick in a tackle.
You can’t blame the umpires for May kicking out to the same spot every time, nobody taking the mark, and yet nobody staying down to contest the ground ball. No umpire is to blame for that.

We lost because they were better for longer. One good quarter of football isn’t enough to win games against quality sides.

Read the question Jaded. They’re not to blame for any of that. They are to blame, under the auspices of the AFL, for making our great game growingly unwatchable. Umpiring of AFL football in its present state is an outright shambles.

Pretty cooked when we keep getting beaten at our supposed strengths.

Getting real sick of seeing the exact same formula every week, does Goody not have a single card to play?

It's not 2021 finals anymore with a freakishly high number of centre clearances - we're having played as well as that since. Recognise it!

Aside from half a quarter, we were a very poor, uninspiring team outclassed by a better team.

We came in soft beating up on bad teams and tonight were shown up by a contender. Another loss to a team in the 8. Not a good look.

Ah well we’ll always have 2021 😔

Yep this team is regressing to 2018 - 2020 rollercoaster performances.

Rd 11 last season until now they clearly haven't fixed it.

The benchmark they set themselves in 2021 will always look harsh on them if they can't find a way to be consistent again.

No way Gawn looks ok.

Grundy  that good anymore IMV he is way of his AA best - in fact I can’t even recall how he made it. Dogga started behind him this year but already overtaken him.

We had a chance to go possibly 2 games clear of teams below us. Except we blew it and drop a spot and if the pies win we're 2 games behind them

The Pies are playing Carlton, North Melbourne and WCE in their next three games. That'll be three wins.

Lever could have bundled the guy over and they might have paid a Port free based on how it was going tbh

Our midfield are all sizzle no steak at the moment.

When teams have a bit of momentum, why aren't we doing the 'Ol Nathan Jones and getting head over the ball and getting a few repeat stoppages in the middle.

Slow the game down a bit from time to time, we know we have the class to eventually get value.

Port made it look really easy tonight.

So what can we say about that?

The Umpires were as bad as I've ever seen.

We always play terribly in the wet.  The team don't seem to understand that you can't do the quick handballing when the ball is slippery and constantly overpossess.

Port are playing a similar game to Collingwood and to some extent Geelong, which uses short angled passing and hard forward running to bypass our zone.  We need to adjust how we play against this style.

With all that, we only lost by a few points.

... can I just add that I'm sick of Oliver acting like a petulant 10 year old child when things don't go his way, and being a smart harse when he fools umps or the opposition. So short sighted!

Yeah, the loss disappointed me!

Why Goody continues not to start with his best mids is beyond me, listening to his presser he acknowledged our clearance issue .. had the best in the 3rd qtr and almost won not rocket science

It’s probably a way of resting our best mids so we’re not burnt out by September.

However we need to record enough wins in the first place to ensure this strategy is a success.

Calmest i’ve been after a loss for a while as frustrating as it was.
Taken some time to think and really it was a bad week to have all the changes.

Sparrow was a massive out with the conditions as they were. Protect the head and all that but how soft is the game now ffs-Grundies freee tonight was just as bad fmd. Anyway! Tmac did ok but then JVR was -1 goal so that didn’t work. Would rather have had Bowey playing on one leg than JVR on for last quarter and a half as it was so wet and unsuited to that style player and maybe get Jmac to tag Butters but anyway, again, I digress.

Salem comes in for Brayshaw in the backline and Brayshaw replacing Sparrow clearly didn’t work. Plus we missed the third tall down back with Petty out but Tmac probably did as well forward as Petty would have had he been playing there, so call it a draw except Petty  Ives better and may have presented more-but calling 2 goals a draw….

All in all a frustrating game and wish the coaches would fix things up sooner. Really thought we’d have runaway with it in the 4th and disappointing to see the run die off. Wish the umpires would use their whistle in the last 5 minutes like they had all game and pay the throws and holds down our end (plus the obvious 2nd 50m penalty). But that would just paper over the cracks for this team and let’s just hope as such it’s the loss we had to have.

I'm still fuming after that... Can't turn it on for 20 minutes & think that's enough.

Positives are if that is the best Port has got well we nearly beat them playing 20 mins of football.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
