it's positional people

Tomlinson played well but for whom?

BBB plays the JVR position

Shache plays the T mac position

Joel Smith ??

Deakyn Smith for whom ??

Bailey Laurie for whom?

The questions go on but it's not easy

If Tommo were given a few weeks in a row in the seniors  you might find that he went back to his early 2021 form - and that would provide us with a good solid third tall defender

We already have a very good third tall defender - Lever. What we've lost is the second tall defender, ex. Petty, and Turner has shown that for the moment at least, he's not big enough for that role.

Rather Tomlinson for 2nd tall, and yes I know.

Agree with the first part. Turner is a third intercepting tall. Hence why he’s struggling to break into the side.

Disagree re Tomlinson. I’d rather play Hibbo as a tall defender than play Tomlinson. He is terrible.

for whom? hibberd or lever is the only player he'd really be replacing at this point, and neither of those players should be dropped

Bowey is injured, we need a third marking tall in defence. He was really good today at Casey. I just think the 3 talks in defence served us well

Turner is ripe, but not big enough for the role he will fill at AFL level. Imagine him being caught out with Fyfe next week, or Curnow or Mackay the following week.

One of BBB or J Smith would be good to see. Not Schache - VFL standard is his standard.

Nup bring brown back in. He was pretty handy before his injury

… but not since.  What is the point of comparison?  John Coleman was pretty handy before his injury but never got a kick after.

Last week had zero to do with Disco’s effort : it was all about being mismatched by the match committee.

Good to see Jed Adams get his numbers up again. 7 marks seems like a good game from a defender.

Had next to no pre season with the shoulder injury and is now starting to pick up form.  When he was drafted it was his draft highlights out of all the draftees that impressed me the most with his strong intercept marking and neat left good.

Good signs ahead.

Tomo our best y'day but his best appears to occur higher up the ground towards the wing vs deep in defence.

That's where he played his best footy for GWS and us when he first came across.  Would you risk winding back the clock and giving him a go there?  The SC probably won't.

I didnt see the GC match so not sure of his form line but Joel was very good y'day.  May get looked at.

BBB was unselfish and serviceable.

Taj's best game y'day for mine.  Cleaned up his kicking and hit one or two targets coming inside plus a goal.  Who's he a chance to replace though and what posi?  Chandler?

Kozzy's been off also but will most likely go around again.

Turner is too good for VFL consistently. We should promote him this week but not play him on someone he is 17 kilos lighter than like the Suns game. Laurie is moving toward a similar position and should be given opportunity during the year. Schache deserves a game ahead of Brown. Joel Smith was good but in spurts. Jordon had a Jordon game. Howes, Jefferson, Adams  and Sestan all shows signs but need another preseason or two to see where it takes them. Not convinced that Woewodin, D Smith or Moniz Wakefield can become good AFL players.

With Hunter out maybe they could try Turner on a wing.  He has decent pace & uses the ball well.

Turner can play Petty’s role from 2021-22. Hibberd then plays the role he played in 2021-22, as does Lever.

We played him v GoldCoast badly so how is the wing going to solve Disco's  problem. He needs to be played on a Fritsch type or a lighter defender. Maybe he needs to bulk up a bit also.

He reminds me of Colin Garland in size and body. Good mark though. Hope he can get a chance very soon.
Now could he be a Jack Silvano role type. Trouble is we have 2 ruckman.

Was superb y'day but the last time we recalled him he didn't gell so well with our other two big boys playing as the 2nd tall D.

Further up the ground he looks alot more sure of himself and makes less errors imho.  Reads the play really well and positioning is excellent.  Maybe on a wing for Hunter if he's out?

Turner could come in to take the 2nd tall forward but then you're probably having to drop hibb who's been very good.  Unless McVee makes way?  He's also been up and about though.

Maybe Petty goes back once he returns.  We really don't want Rick taking the 2nd tall as he isn't the greatest here and we're robbing ourselves of our best tall intercept defender.  That's one compromise (Rick on 2nd tall) and the other is a win to the oppo taking away one of our big past strengths (Rick's intercept rebounds).  That's effectively two wins in one to the oppo!  It certainly needs fixing whether this is Tomo, Petty going back or giving Disco another decent block.

This is what the coaches get paid the big $$ for.  Hopefully they'll make some decent calls.

Adams played his best game y'day? (I missed the GC game).  Starting to show some good signs.  He might be a decent Petty replacement at some stage if the FD continues to play Petty forward.

CASEY SCORES HIGH by KC from Casey

If you arrived at Casey Fields early enough on Saturday morning, you would have been greeted with the prospect of a miserable, wet day conducive of low scoring, scrappy football. But conditions moderated, the ground dried up and the fans were treated to an entertaining, high-scoring open brand of football that saw some classic high marking and both teams topping the 100-point barrier. The Casey Demons won the contest by 117 to 102 but North Melbourne were not to be denied for the way in which they fought out the game to its very end.

North have been in good form lately and, despite their injury and suspension woes at AFL level, they included some top players in their lineup. Halfway through the opening quarter, they held the upper hand until Joel Smith booted two quick goals late in the term - one off a screamer of a mark that, while not rising to his father’s mark of the last century, was top shelf. Roan Steele was in outstanding early form picking up 13 touches in a scintillating opening term.

As it has often done this season, Casey slowly edged its way forward and with the likes of Ben Brown, Jake Melksham and Josh Schache joining Smith among the goalkickers, they soon moved to a four or five goal lead range which they carried into the final quarter before the accurate Kangaroos threatened on a few occasions but the home team had all the answers.

James Jordon, who came on in the driving Adelaide rain as Narrm’s sub late on Friday night was flown back to play for Casey and was it's leading ballwinner, finishing with 27 disposals and eight clearances.

The Casey defence held firm all day, led by Adam Tomlinson (24 disposals) who took 10 marks and Daniel Turner (22 touches, 13 marks) not far behind him. If one of them missed the mark, it would be gobbled up by Jed Adams who took seven marks.

Bailey Laurie had 22 touches and two goals while Taj Woewodin kicked one goal from his 22 disposals. James Harmes (21 disposals, eight clearances) and Blake Howes (18 possessions, nine marks) both had busy afternoons.

Of the Demons' younger AFL brigade, Deakyn Smith had a good game and Andy Moniz-Wakefield was prominent early. Ollie Sestan had some impressive moments while Matt Jefferson kicked a goal and had a few cameo moments.

Skipper Mitch White had an excellent game and led the team well to overtake Steele as the team's best VFL listed player by game's end.

Casey has a tough challenge next weekend as it takes on Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval next Saturday.

The one thing you don’t acknowledge is when you bring in a VFL player he is then surrounded by AFL players . Then you can judge them …

Yes we havent seen a lot but his cameos look good to me. He's big, will fill out, looks a very good mark but also a very nice kick. hopefully he continues this trajectory and could be ready for a debut next year. looks a classic full back type

I dont think so. Turner and Laurie are ready to be promoted to the right roles and I can see them developing at AFL level having good quality AFL careers with us. Tomlinson, Harmes, Jordon you know what you are going to get week to week if needed. I cant see Brown getting back close to 2021 and J Smith is showing some signs forward. The others are too early to tell but I think some of them show promising signs but we should not need them this year it should be all about developing them for next onwards.

There's a lot in that.

AFL has a greater degree of speed and therefore openness compared to VFL. A lot more scrums.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few rounds with 16 players on the ground just to open play up a bit.

Not helped by Casey playing one boundary line 70% of the time
