PODCAST: Steven May Interview

Is he envious of the facilities players at other clubs have access to or is it a non-factor for him?

What is the biggest difference between Selwyn Griffiths program and that of Darren Burgess?

Please thank him for bringing a level of competitiveness and ruthlessness I had been waiting for for decades at the club. He is easily the best full back the club has had in the modern era.

I'm keen to know about the hammy injury he played with in the 2021 GF. Feel free to ask in a more eloquent way but as someone who has had a range of hammy injuries  it seems wild to me that he was able to play such a big game and was passed fit by the medical staff. Was pain an issue, or was it more of a restriction in movement come game day?  Did he have to get pain injections to get through?

Well-documented internal conflict last year (which saw him miss games) and coincided with team-performance falling after a strong start to the year.

How does he and our club go about building up the camaraderie, connections and team mood after a period like that in a competition where it feels like only the most tight-knit groups can achieved the ultimate success?

Where did he play his footy as a junior before being drafted? Is a move forward possible in a few years given his attributes?

What are the high level tactics / instructions they are given when kicking in and how much of that is guided by analytics?

What does he do away from footy to relax?

Where will he live post footy and what job would he like to do?

Reason/s for our form drop at the back end of last year?

Does he have a view on the voice vote?

I’d LOVE to know if he opens up re back issue, and confirms it’s impacting his down ability but seemingly not his reaching up ability — prob 10% chance he will give the truth re the injury as club is extremely conscious of OPP exploiting it but if ANYONE owns it, it’ll be Maysy!!!

I would also really like to know his thoughts on how he’s feeling about Pies, Lions and how confident he is we will stack up and notably how he feels good clubs are exploring our ground-ball in D50 & why they all seems so supremely confident they can beat us by exploiting that and what club is doing to fix it 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

I suspect Selwyn Griffith had a big part in Melbourne's approach in 2021 (he joined Melbourne in November 2020), especially as he made the move from Brisbane on the basis that he would be replacing Darren Burgess after the 2021 Season with Burgess moving to Adelaide. So it would probably have just been minor tweaks in 2022. Having said that, Burgess seemed to have been actively involved in discussions with Goody on game day (certainly in the 2021 GF) whereas Griffith seems to be more in the backround- age, seniority, personality could all be factors here but I am totally speculating.

A related question is the impact of current strength and rehabilitation coach Jack McLean who joined the Club full time in October 2022 after being with Casey part-time as VFL High Performance Manager in a Premiership Year.

I have never really heard him talk about his aboriginality.

I'd be curious to know more about his people and country.

And id be interested to know what role, if any, he has with young Aboriginal players like Kozzie.

And a related question is his thoughts on why it was so important to Kosie that the club involved his family in the contract negotiations.

Completely understand the curiosity and it would great to hear what he’d have to say, but if he hasn’t talked about it much it might be because he doesn’t want to.

My wife works closely with members of the indigenous community, and what she’s noticed over the years is that some indigenous people are genuinely uncomfortable talking about their culture/history with non-indigenous people. There are a lot of different reasons for this, but the main one seems to be that many indigenous people are not fortunate enough to have the kind of connections to their own history/mob/stories to speak with confidence about them. In our ongoing, well-meaning quest to mend our relationship with and better-understand indigenous culture, we sometimes make assumptions that all indigenous people are deeply-connected to their culture and are willing to teach others about it, but the reality is that colonisation has sought to suppress these connections for a couple of hundred years, and as a result, many indigenous individuals are on their own personal mission to learn about themselves before engaging with non-indigenous people about it (particularly in the media). It’s also true to say that some aren’t, and this needs to be respected too.

Not to assume this is the case with Maysie, but it’s worth being mindful of.

Seconded - great call @binman - I’d love to hear more about his indigenous background.

May is known as the general and leader of the Melbourne backline, but I'd be keen to know what he does as a leader off the field. What young players does he gravitate towards and put his arm around? Does he have a "protege" at the club? What does he do in terms of off-field leadership as the defensive captain and senior Indigenous player?

Also, how much we will beat them by on Kings Birthday

Sorry it took so long. Disaster struck during the interview. The bluetooth connection between my phone and my mixer disconnected a 1/3 of the way during the interview and would not reconnect. This has never happened before so the rest of the interview was conducted on loudspeak with the phone held up to my mic. The audio didn't sound great and it has taken me about 5 hours in post getting it to a point that I was happy with. I probably only lost about 10 or 15 seconds of audio but I think I did a good job of piecing it back together. On the plus side my cleaning up of the audio erased most of the traffic noises.

PS: Jake Lever was with Maysie in the car.

Sounds great to me, now I've almost completely listened through!  Hard to tell the difference but maybe at the 15 min mark?

Edit:  whoops, just heard the pop 😂  it worked out though!

I'd love his opinion of Disco Turner. Also, anyone else on the list, whether playing at Casey or in the first 22 as a forward, that strikes him as a possible small to medium backman option.

Well that's not Disco really he is med to tall Backman. Leave the smalls to Judd and Salo and Bowser.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
