Of course not, but 21 games a side over 23 weeks, maybe (but hopefully not) a wildcard weekend for a 24th week plus finals is a stack of games.

Making the players play 23 games plus finals a year is crazy to me. 22 was already the limit to what I thought was fair for health and safety.

The big question to me is does 10 games a round increase the broadcast rights. Tassie won’t. WA might be opening up more Friday double headers.   Not sure if more small audience sides really move the needle.

That’s true and not likely but in theory the size of Bendigo/Ballarat and local region combined could support an AFL team.

I reckon a Margaret River (region) team playing out of Bunbury. With Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River combined the population is well over 130,000 not to mention the other towns in the region and a bit further North of Bunbury.

 

Would be a popular away trip for supporters.

Tbh I'm not sure this is the right time for the government to be handing out this amount of money I mean really at the end of the day every Australian will be paying for all this plus interest. 

Getting sick and tired of governments throwing money around like candy and not giving a [censored] about the enormous amount of debt their putting on our kids and their kids, it's just not a feasible way to run a country.

19 teams is bananas as it does nothing for extra game revenue, screws the Gather Round concept and gives everyone a bye. But it is a whole bushel of bananas to suggest going to 20 teams purely for the sake of fixturing.

What an instantly negative comment. Truthful in part TV a QQ/-/….- but we beat 17 when we were4 the best and GWS and GC have not been the spoilers. Maybe Tassie will be the new love child and win a flag before the two "outcast" AFL mobs. 

All except the perennial Dockers all other teams have won a Flag as they have come from AFL. The Suns and Giants have not. Tassie will be more productive and footy smart than the rugby states teams and admin wise. 

We will still be in flag mode most likely in 2027/8 so it's up to us to keep our window open and recent signings are a great sign of our future potential.

None of your points make a substantial reason for not having Tasmania nor a 20 the side that may come in time. Tasmania will be more successful because of its football heritage than the GWS and GC. It dares not to fail.

23 rounds and every one plays each other once

12 games a round

so it's not just the 20th team it's 5 more teams

With 20 teams could you have 2 divisions of 10 with promotion and relegation?

*18 H&A plus another 5 games against teams in the other division (ensuring there's always a crosstown game eg Crows vs Power and other 'traditional' games)
* Final 5 in Div 1 and Final 4 in Div 2 with Div 2 finalists playing off against the lowly Div 1 teams for promotion/relegation (eg 2nd in Div 2 plays vs 9th in Div 1, 3rd in Div2 vs 8th Div 1, 4th vs 7th, with the respective premiers and wooden spooners promoted/relegated automatically). The promotion/relegation games at the end of the season would be huge.
* Div 1 teams have higher salary caps/lists allowing for the better players to move there. Highest draft picks go the newly promoted team(s). eg winner of Div 2, gets #1 pick. wooden spooner in Div 1 gets #20 (and is relegated).

I’m a Melbournian living in Canberra and have been for the past few years. I see a lot of anecdotal comments from people on Facebook etc. suggesting that Canberra is the ideal location. Personally, I’m not sure where this sentiment comes from. I’ve worked across three departments and I can genuinely count the number of AFL supporters on one hand. 

Either people have no interest in AFL (NRL easily seems to outweigh AFL support/interest), or those that do follow AFL largely come to Canberra from the Eastern/Western states and support a team already. 

Those few AFL supporters that are born and bred Canberrans support the Giants. There’s no room for a ‘second’ team in Canberra (even if GWS are only ‘adoptive’). 

Many people who haven’t worked or lived in Canberra also don’t necessarily appreciate how transient the population of Canberra can be too, with many people only being in the territory for a defined period.

That all got turned on its head in the early 80s when the NRL first expanded and established the Canberra Raiders. 

I'd doubt there's any traction in creating the 20th team in the national capital now. That horse bolted 40 years ago

So currently we have the two most recent expansion clubs struggling on and off the field. Relying heavily on AFL funding to survive, low memberships, a concerning trend of quality players requesting a trade at seasons end, stuck in the bottom half of the ladder for what seems like eternity and last season we had the Suns trading Jack Bowes and pick 7 to Geelong to ease salary cap pressures. Who exactly and how much are they paying these players to find themselves in this position? I thought I read years ago that clubs that were in these positions had an AFL appointment accountant assigned to them to try and avoid these situations.

In addition we have

Hawks : Intentionally tanking over 2-4 year period to cash in before Tassie’s draft concessions come into play.

North : Less than six months ago they were a Clarko signature away from becoming irrelevant. Currently struggling in terms of their playing list.

W.C.E : In addition to injuries they have an aging list and previous poor trades and starting to hurt them.

I must be watching a different game if anyone thinks a 19th or 20th is a good idea for our competition. The argument that an extra game will generate X amount of extra funding is ridiculous, on average there will be 3-4 games a week not worth watching. What are the main reasons players are leaving the Suns and GWS? Are they home sick / family reasons? Do they not like where they’re living ? Or are they chasing success at a successful club? Possibly a combination of these things, but I think ultimately the latter. What makes so many people think player retention won’t be an issue for a Tasmanian team. I’m all for a team in Tasmania but another club must make way, 18 teams must be the maximum, we don’t have the population or talent to  justify further expansion.

I think it's entirely possible that a team(s) could exist ( or be brought in ) purely to protect the back door. I.e.. to thwart the NRL.  Many forget the AFL is a business... it has competition. 

Always reminds me of supermarkets.  Sometimes one opens purely to stop the other
