Sure, but unless we get Reid, I can't see us having enough list spots.

Think we have 4 spots, 5 if we move on K Turner.

Can see us taking two at the draft, a mature recruit (Billings/Lycett?) and use a rookie or late pick for f/s Brown.

If the Lions manage to prise Brandon Ryan out of Hawthorn for the ghost of Gunston I’ll be absolutely annoyed.

He’s got a lot of upside as a forward/ruck. More natural than Fullarton.

Prepared to be annoyed. He's already met with Brisbane and reports are he's liking the security of having a 3 year deal on offer.

Don't blame him.

Have to disagree on Kossie he is not a midfielder nor will he ever be one it's fine for short bursts but he does not have the Tank to do it all day he's made for a speed type impact player, don't you think Goodwin would have done it last year if was a midfielder type.

Try McVee into the midfield as we are one paced in there, Turner to the back flank.

Kossie absolutely has the tank for midfield. He’s a great speed and endurance runner. He stayed forward as we had no forward pressure without him and because he’s had a long stretch where he wasn’t winning the ball. He fixed his contested ball late in the season.

Wouldn’t blame him, not sure the Hawks are better with Chol than with him, if I’m the Hawks I’m not giving him up for a future second without seeing him play another year.

Did we consider an offer or only chase Fullarton? Is Kelly O’Donnell still our pro scout? And is he awake?

But what about the promise to upgrade D Turner to the primary list? That leaves us one less primary list spot.

Rivers and Howes are totally different players - if you think Howes is capable of what Rivers can deliver I simply don't see that at all.

Rivers is a strong unit and has become a very good intercept mark. Howes is a wide receiver, good disposal and generally good decision maker but not much beyond that atm.

If we play 3 talls, McVee and good defensive flankers in Bowey and Salem (when healthy) then we really don’t need quality contested ability and marking for the 7th defender.

Obviously Howes has to get stronger in the contest to become an AFL footballer but if he does make some improvements I prefer the balance of another runner and distributor.

Maybe Rivers stays back and Salem on ball. Either way, more class on ball, fresh legs across half back.

Going by the team contract list we have 34 primary listed players and 4 rookies for 2024 with D Turner counted as a primary listed player for 2024 and also including our recent trades in McAdam and Fullarton.

We can have 42 max combined list so we can have 4 more senior players or 3 and a rookie, or 2 and 2 rookies.

I think I have that right.

Pickett, Chandler, ANB, Spargo, AMW, Laurie... we are well and truly stacked for small forward options.

Very simplistic to say all of those blokes play the same role, because they do not.

Add to that Watson has more midfield upside than all of them (and goal smarts only equaled by Kossie in that group), which I would have thought is more of a need than replacing May in 2 - 3 years when you’re deep inside a premiership window.

Well that's your opinion fair enough but if as you say he has the tank how come Goodwin didn't play him in the midfield during the season in long game time role?

Not simplistic at all. We base our game around contest and defence. Defence win premierships that is a known fact. Our execution of forward 50 entries and lack of tall/medium forwards was our downfall. Have Melksham and JVR in both finals we win both finals no doubt about it.

It's a crucial year for our number 3, looking forward to a fit and roaring Salem to be our pivotal running quarterback.

Missed his influence in the last 2 years for reasons unknown.

Need him back to his best.

No announcement yet either way for him. He's a cat B rookie so can be kept in addition to the list size of 42.

Surely we'd keep him as Cat B then to give us an extra list spot

Rubbish answer, we needed outside speed in the midfield all year and he wasn't used for long periods in games and there is a reason for that he's not built for it take the pace aspect out of it he's not a contested footballer, not a contested mark type and not a high disposal footballer he is an impact player who can turn a quarter but can drift out of the game just as quick.

If Goodwin really believed that Kossie could play midfield in every game he would have and he didn't so that must tell you something but I guess not.

Agree. It was a long season for Salem after his thyroid issue followed by a knew complaint. His first 3 or 4 games after retruning were excellent.
He was close to BOG for us v PA in the wet (IMO) and very good KB v Pies. He was clearly running on empty late in the season.

I also agree with the other poster re: trying him forward. He has a low centre of gravity and uses his body well for his size and was once a one grab player.

Not really a trade rumours post but I feel it's important to add here when discussing our tactics going into the draft.

Players out:

Senior list - Grundy, Hibberd, Dunstan, Jordon, Harmes (r) D.Smith

We've added McAdam, Fullertan and D.Turner to be upgraded with our last NDP, leaving us with 2 available senior spots for the draft which means we're hoping Brown can be picked up as a Rookie. This is how I see the draft playing out not including Academy and F/S selections:

The other list spot that may or may not open up is Melky. Depending on what happens today and draft night he we either me on main list or moved to a rookie spot

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
