The Crows are keen on a ready-made quality player in return for McAdam, who turned his back on a fresh deal at Adelaide to join Melbourne in the exchange period.

But the Demons will likely offer the Crows a third-round pick or low-round pick swap in the McAdam deal.

Melbourne’s top priority is to secure adequate compensation in the trade for Brodie Grundy to Sydney, such as a second-round pick.

I mean props to Adelaide for trying but they’re wasting their time if they thought they were getting Petty or Sparrow for McAdam.

    I wonder if we’re going to be brave. Offer something substantial to fill a need? It appears our draft hand is weaker than we hoped.

    I much prefer the way Josh Mahoney (and now Tim Lamb) go about things. We pick our targets and always trade fair currency, if not a little overs sometimes, to secure a deal quickly. 

    Some list managers (like Adelaide's here) are no better than the teenagers on BigFooty.

    Not exactly a rumour but whenever experts talk about Gold Coast pick I hear other teams ahead of us. I hope we still remain in the picture for whatever first rounder Gold Coast trade in. Upgrading our first rounder (15 or whatever) to 10 for a second rounder makes a lot of sense to me and should help them for points given they have three prospects to bring in

    That's actually a decent shout if we can't get our hands on that Gold Coast pick, which is looking increasingly unlikely.

    We get pick 3 and can choose from McKercher/Duursma and North end up with 3 picks in the top 7 (post FA and Academy picks).

    There's a lot of energy on this thread.

    As someone posted however total trades are around 30 and most are at the Harmes level. Points trading is interesting but with North this year and Tasmania to come the pool is hopelessly compromised.

    I enjoy the speculation but it would be interesting to hear from managers why players tend to re-sign rather than switch. Especially players at less successful clubs. Post 2021 I thought we might have picked up a player or two as a destination club from GCS or the likes but it doesn't happen.

    Agreed no Naughton. And also steer clear of Harry McKay. Both would only add heartache to our accuracy woes.

    Paul Connors was on Getable podcast a couple of weeks back talking about this. Worth a listen. From memory, the clubs don’t want to make massive changes, security in contracts, and the bargaining agreement that’s just been finalised. Mid season trading might change that, but he is saying it’s going to be the most boring trade period he’s seen.

    What drugs are they smoking if they think we'd consider trading Petty or Sparrow for an average mature age player that doesn't even want to be on their list?

    Unless they are trowing in a first round draft pick, but I honestly don't even think that goes close in the case of Petty.

    Surely this is a joke and the jurno that wrote it is desperate for something to print.

    Interesting... My present thoughts on TMac and BBB staying for another year are that I'm ambivalent simply because we have so many others leaving thus freeing up spots. Are we better off with them leaving allowing us to plunder the lower levels of the draft and trying to find a diamond. (In saying this I'm assuming injuries and form will preclude both from senior selection in 2024)

    Pity you have to give all draftees 2 years as a one year option for lower level choices might actually encourage clubs to give the outliers a chance. Sure we have the mid year rookie draft but not sure that it's the answer as increasingly those players within the elite full time training universe offered by AFL improve at a different rate.

    I wouldn't. I'd much prefer a midfielder who can hit a target over a key forward.

    The real gold is the trades where you pick up an Acres or similar for not much. I don't follow other teams that closely so not sure who would fit that bill but knowing JT they often target guys a few years out like Langdon or Lever and invest a lot of time in getting them to the Dees.

    Isn't he a WA boy, could see him teaming up with Oscar Allen in the future.  Free agent next year I think, bulldogs might let him go this year as part of a package to WCE to get pick 1.

    Who was Dean Cox before Gardiner did his PCL.

    Cameron back up at Sydney couldn’t get a game

    Mumford back up at Cats behind King and Blake

    Jolly behind White

    Biggs was a nobody 6 months ago and Hickey got Sydney to the GF last year at his 4th club.

    You just need to pick up a back up journeyman to give Max a chop out

    Tough sell to a promising young guy in a back up role - come and be in another back up role, except with this one the main guy is zero chance of getting dropped for form and probably has a few years left in him.

    Can be a journeyman like Phillips, Hickey, Jono Griffin . Not those in particular but that sort

    I get the sentiment but as @Axis of Bob says, some of the needs on our list are very unlikely going to be filled by elite kicks. That's largely because, as much as we need better kicking, the competition isn't flush with elite kicks and certainly not in the ruck or key forward positions.

    If Naughton were available he'd make us significantly better instantly, and that's assuming his kicking for goal remains as it is now.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
