People did not follow any football team because they had a home ground, people followed teams through family, friends, players and success, football is tribal game it's as simple as that, marketing is completely different to 20 -30 years ago.

Your point about the heartland, hate to tell you but that has changed with different demographics of people, Hawthorn moved from their heartland Collingwood did the same those days are gone the reality is people don't care it's what they do on the ground that counts.

Success brings recruits, and if the redevelopment of the southern stand does get done how does that solve the problem it's the same being at AMMI park?

Do any other clubs have multiple training sites? I seem to recall Richmond built something out at Craigieburn. Do they use that as well as Punt Road? What about Essendon...do they still use Windy Hill for anything as well as Tullamarine?

I respectfully disagree with you. Collingwood still have very big links to Vic Park. There are many many Hawthorn supporters in Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew and the leafy eastern suburbs. They grew their support when they moved to Waverley, expanding their supporter base, and by engaging the community out that way. I do agree that onfield success helps.

Melbourne heartland still appears to be Malvern, Glen Iris, Armadale, Toorak and the bayside areas. This was fairly evident during our 2021 finals campaign, where many of the homes were sporting melbourne colours. For me, this is why the Caulfield Racecourse makes a of of sense.

I'd love to get the club to release the figures on how many members, of our 65K, are residing in Casey. I would absolutely love to see those figures. When we play games out there in preseason we are 100% of the time outnumbered. The AFLW  team gets lowly crowds. It is not heartland, it never will be. You actually can't convince me otherwise.

I don't disagree with you. However, what have we done to engage the City of Melbourne residents? It's a huge opportunity. Many people who have zero links to AFL clubs, just waiting to be engaged. Do they even know we exist? Be hard to know, given our lack of exposure in the city to whom our name is tied. 

 

We tried to increase brand exposure a few years ago in this way. They rented signage opposite Flinders st Station and ran free coffee carts. I like that sort of initiative. I am a little like you - I'd prefer a Demon Shop in the heart of the CBD, rather than at the [censored] end of the MCG, where no one can access. There is so much empty retail in the CBD, you'd perhaps consider it, wouldn't you?

@rjaytour dismissiveness of our facilities is overdone. Casey has had money poured in and will continue to have money thrown at it. AAMI is the inner city presence that is oh so important. What do we lack exactly?

1. I am not blindly following the board but do understand how hard it is to get a multi million funded project off the ground  it does take time and lets face it governments are wary of giving money to a football club when they are struggling financial wise not good aesthetics.

2 Yes I would like a all in one club but we had our chances years ago, but until then we have facilities that are damm good for the players and that what counts.

Sorry, on your first point yes we had our injuries but the game plan was the biggest problem, even they tried to change late season  but it was too late.

That's pretty simple.

So far we have in place a short term solution that is working but everyone knows, including both of you, that it is short term.

As soon as anyone questions anything to do with facilities some seem to think it's an attack on the board.

It's not, but it is a legitimate question.

....and 'demon3165', we can add game plan to the mix of reasons although I think injury might have effected the plan. It's neve just one thing.

Stupid comment. I am not the President or CEO of the club. Yes, the process is confidential, but that doesn't mean there is anything to report. We have clearly made no progress. Pert himself admitted that and gave himself a big red mark for not achieving a strategic objective in time. The narrative we have good facilities is new. Yes, they are improving but the club has also admitted we are dead last. Also, seen your comments on "we won a premiership training at Casey...". Yes we did, but we won in a year where all clubs were displaced for parts of the year and the finals series. It was not a normal year and none of us know what would have happened if it had been.

I don’t care about having ONE training base, I don’t care about co-location of admin staff with the FD, and I reject the notion of this facility being a ‘home’ for the club - it will always be the G.

It is not defence of the board, only a push back of an agitating group’s self-important judgement of this boards record.

Frankly, the board should come out and say we are at Casey as our ‘training base’. Turn it into a Peninsula Paradise similar to what Geelong have and just be done with it.

Just a shame it’s an hour away from the CBD. 

They don't have a pool at Casey, they are in the process of raising funds to build one.

They are asking 100 supporters to donate money to cover the costs.
