Finals Eligibilty - 2016 Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Finals Series  

20. Participation in Finals

(a) A Player who has not played in at least one AFL, VFL Senior Grade or Development League Home and Away Match in the relevant season will be ineligible to play in the Senior Grade Finals Series.

(b) Subject to  Rule 20(c) below, a Player who has played in an AFL Home and Away Match after 1 July in the relevant season will be ineligible to play in VFL Senior Grade or Development League Finals Series Matches unless that Player has played in a combined total of at least six (6) Senior Grade or Development League Home and Away Matches in the same season.

(c) A Player who has not played in at least two (2) Development League Home and Away Matches in the relevant season will be ineligible to play in a Development League Finals Series Match unless, immediately prior to selection:

(i) the Player has missed at least ten (10) consecutive VFL Home and Away Matches through injury; and

(ii) the Player’s Club remains active in the VFL Senior Grade Finals Series.

(d) A Player who has played in more than eight (8) VFL Senior Grade Home and Away Matches will be ineligible to play in Development League Final Series Matches unless that Player has played in at least six (6) Development League Home and Away Matches.

(e) Despite any other provision of this Rule 20, but subject to  Rule 20(f), where a Club has both its AFL and VFL Senior Teams engaged on the same weekend, any Player may be selected to play in the VFL Senior Team so long as that Player has played in at least one AFL or VFL Senior Grade Home and Away Match or Development League Home and Away Match in that relevant season.

(f) When an AFL Club is eliminated from the AFL Final Series on the same weekend as the VFL Grand Final, the selection of players in the VFL Senior Grade team shall be unrestricted, provided the player has participated in at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior Grade or AFL Victoria Development League match in the relevant season.

(g) Despite any other provision in Rule 20, where a Club does not field a Development League Team, an AFL listed Player must:

(i) qualify under Regulation 20(b); and

(ii) have played no more than 12 AFL Home and Away Matches,

to be eligible to play in VFL Finals Series Matches.

(h) Despite any other provision in Rule 20, in circumstances where:

(i) an AFL Club is participating in the AFL Finals Series, but is not required to play on a particular weekend (by virtue of winning its AFL Qualifying Final and earning a one-week break before its AFL Preliminary Final); and

(ii) the AFL Club’s VFL team is playing on that weekend,

any AFL listed player who did not play in the AFL Qualifying Final will be eligible to play in the Club’s VFL team in the week in which the AFL Club has a one-week break.

(i) Despite any other provision in Rule 20, in circumstances where:

(i) an AFL Club is participating in the AFL Finals Series, but is not playing on the weekend of the AFL bye weekend after the final round of the AFL home and away season; and

(ii) the AFL Club’s VFL team is playing on that weekend,

any AFL listed player who did not play in the AFL Club’s AFL team in the final round of the AFL home and away season will be eligible to play in the Club’s VFL team in the AFL bye round after the final round of the AFL home and away season.

(j) Despite any other provision in Rule 20, the CEO of AFL Victoria (or nominee) may deem any Player eligible to play in any VFL Finals Series Match.

Weid needs to train the whole pre season in ruck

JVR is the real deal. I've banged on about him far too much this year. Told you he's the real deal @Bitter but optimistic. The excitement is real. His 2nd efforts and defensive tackling pressure for such a big dude is insane.

Chandler and Bedford need to play more senior games next year, it's as simple as that. The dynamic and X factor these two have is untapped imo. Spargo and ANB are under pressure imo because I think they've been incredibly disappointing this year.

Blake Howes has certainly grown. He looks 192cm tall instead of the 190cm as listed. I would also like to see him train in his natural position as a 3rd floating forward. Reminded me of Gunston when he took that mark.

Corey Ellison is absolutely worth a look imo even as a train on player. Has solid hands and is physically mature as well. Rarely gets beaten.

How exciting is Andy Moniz Wakefield? His ariel work and leap is very impressive. He's such a unique player that I actually don't know who I'd compare him to in the AFL. Strong summer and hopefully few NAB games next to Kozzie.

Still can't believe Howes dropped as far as he did. Pretty sure he was in frame for our first pick, and instead we got him in the mid-30s! Looking forward to seeing how he develops with JvR next year

Hopefully next year the commentators will pronounce van Rooyen's name correctly.  It's pronounced van Royen.

Couldn’t play him, Tmac and Brown in the same forward line but you could play him Tmac and JVR who has a lot more mobility and much better below his knees

Now it is common knowledge that I have never been a fan of the weed however I have watched him a bit at Casey as a ruckman and IMO in this roll he shows the most promise.

How could he have been worse than Jackson in the last two games?

WE complain about the Weid struggling to take a one grab mark. I believe he takes more than Jackson. Jackson is an average Young ruckman who gives you little in the forward line.

I don't like reading DD's post, but this one I entirely agree. van Rooyen is a gun. How he hasn't played a game defies logic.

Howes very promising needs to get a bit more of the ball.

I think we can play all Bedford, Chandler and Pickett in the one team they have x factor, Spargo's lost me doesn't impact enough.

Moniz-Wakefield is exciting good above his head too like Chandler, a bit behind the rest but one to look out for.

Ellison is an interesting one doesn't get much of the ball but does his job week in week out. I wouldn't be against picking him up as a rookie. Tomlinson really isn't a key defender. Turner and Ellison could set us up for the years ahead especially if Petty plays up forward more.

Weid is insurance in case Gawn or Grundy get injured. I'm convinced Grundy will be with us next year we will pay half his salary and people forget how good he was in his AA year he's an extra midfielder. A descent improvement on the overrated Jackson.

I might be in the minority here, but I reckon giving JVR an entire year in the VFL will do wonders for his development. Throw in a GF for some extra pressure/experience that will only help him.

Sure he could’ve helped last night, but he could also have been a deer in the headlights or become severely disenfranchised with the quality of our entries only scarring him. A full pre-season in the gym will do wonders and he will be good to go from round 1 (and automatically become our best KPF - not bad for a player with 0 AFL games).

A forward line of JVR, Fritsch and Kosi means we have something half decent to work with next year. Throw in TMAC for experience and as second banana, it can’t be any worse than what we dished up in attack this year. Gotta bring in another quality KPF though.

Totally agree Old Dee, he’s been really good. As @dazzledavey36 says I’d save whatever we get for Jacko to fill other needs as opposed to giving up a lot to get Grundy

I am beginning to think Goodwin is far too conservative. I put the blame for our season squarely on his head.

We are not gonna give up a lot for Grundy. Chances we could get the dogs and Freo's first pick for Jackson. We use the dogs pick to pick a key forward and use Freo's pick on Grundy as long as we are paying half his wage. That would be a good deal IMO.

Like several others, I have liked Weiderman's efforts in the ruck at Casey and reckon it is worth playing him some more in that role as forward/2nd-ruck at AFL level if Jackson goes.  Am really looking forward to JVRs first AFL game next year.  I don't want to see the club invest anything in Grundy and would rather see some younger talent come in.

The Casey Demons will play in the VFL Grand Final at Ikon Park next Sunday after overturning their final round loss to the Brisbane Lions Reserves and dominating the Preliminary Final to emerge victorious by 51 points. 

And while the distance in standards between the AFL and VFL at finals time is admittedly a wide one and the opposition and conditions different, there were a few Demons on display who excelled to the point where one was left to ask whether they could have made the difference had they taken part in proceedings the night before at the MCG. 

For instance, Casey controlled the aerial duels in this match with a superiority all over the ground of 81 marks to 36. The discrepancy was clear everywhere and it set the scene for a confidence-laden display that was in stark contrast to that of the Melbourne which busted the game apart in the first half and slowed to close to a standstill in the end. One cannot help but wonder how that forward line would have performed with the boundless enthusiasm of key forward Jacob Van Rooyen with his marking strength and the experience and the strength of Tom McDonald. Each of them contributed three goals from key forward positions.

The Demons made a slow start against the breeze at Casey Fields. They conceded the first goal and took a little over half of the opening stanza to record their first major when Andy Moniz-Wakefield took advantage of a great pass from Luke Dunstan. A couple more late in the term opened up a 13 point lead at the first break which they extended to 33 by half time.

Unlike their AFL counterparts, the Casey variety of Demonkind never relented. Indeed, they picked up a head of steam and, with winners all over the field they smashed the Lions in the premiership quarter to go into the final break with a comfortable lead and then coasted to record a comfortable victory in the end. It was a case of the best from Casey on show.

Casey had winners everywhere with their control of the key forward positions and an impenetrable defence led by Adam Tomlinson, Matt Buntine, Corey Ellison and Jake Bowey who was quite dynamic on the day and was another who showed the crowd what might have been if only the Melbourne selectors had shown some more risk and daring. 

The Demons dominated the midfield positions through veteran Jimmy Munro and Luke Dunstan with the run and pace of Toby Bedford and Kade Chandler always a factor in  overturning the Brisbane dominance of their Round 22 encounter.

Special mention should be made of Sam Weideman’s performances in the ruck. Despite his size, he has been growing (pardon the pun) nicely into the role and one wonders whether the Demons will try to develop him in the role going forward.

The Demons also have plenty to look forward to in the form of their Northern Territory Next Generation Recruit Andy Moniz-Wakefield who shows all of the trademarks of a potential X Factor player of the future. Another in that category is Blake Howes who has the height and pace to fill several roles with another pre season or two behind him. Both will benefit from the experience of a final series at this level. With Bailey Laurie, Taj Woewodin and Deakyn Smith all out this week, there is a depth of talent available for the club to reboot in future years.

However, there’s a premiership to be won in the meantime. Casey’s opponent will be decided later today when Southport and Gold Coast Reserves meet in the Second Preliminary Final.

Just on a side note, Matt Buntine has been an astute pick up for Casey this year.

For starters, the Pies aren't going to pay half of Grundy's contract for 5 years ($500k pa). Secondly, giving up a 1st rd pick on a player who struggled in 2021 and basically missed all of 2022 through injury is insanity. He is not a current AA player, so his deeds in the past are irrelevant. 

The Pies need a majority of Grundy's contract off their books in order to get the players they have targeted. The fact that they see Grundy as being surplus to their needs is telling. He's a salary dump, and we are reportedly his only suitor. A token pick is all we should be giving up.
