Gawn needs to spend the summer practicing set shots. He has the yips now, and they’ll be hanging around during the finals, no doubt. Love his safe hands, but we need players running past him to take the shots on goal from now on. 

Fritsch needs to be the target, not the one outstretched hand of BBB. But Fritsch needs to friggin’ PRESENT. He is useless to everybody when he lurks at the back of a pack.

Chandler is also ahead a little as a HF IMHO.  Laurie is a good to VG player at VFL level but he isn't what we need right at this moment.

Lacking in pretty much any big game for us is a Key Tall Forward who can split packs and take some contesteds.  And finish from anywhere within 45 ish more often than not.

We would have dropped only half the games we've dropped this season if we had one up and running and well entrenched in the top 4 by now.

Yes, he seemed to really roam around and cover lots of ground, unfortunately that doesn't mean he played an "immense" game. And yes, I remember him being down the Collingwood end and being done for holding the ball, he had a fair few moments like that that cost us.

6 kicks is not what you want from your lone full forward either, and he made way too many errors - 5 turnovers, 4 clangers.

7 pressure acts and 0 tackles is really poor too given there would have been focus on our forward pressure.

Brown needs a second tall to make the forward line work more efficiently IMO, so I don't 100% put the blame on him, but geez if that is what you consider an "immense" game from a full forward then I would raise the bar if I was you.

Goes missing is just wrong. All small forwards go missing. Look at the Pies guys last night. McCreery nothing for a half. Ginnivan wasn’t even playing.

My issue with Koz is his inconsistent efforts at the contest. Would love to stamp that out of his game. Like Fritsch’s defending or selfishness, best to get on to it early. But when the alternatives are just far inferior players I can’t see why we’d do it now.

I was happy/content with Brown's game last night, think he was linking well with players, score involvements, marks in the f50.

He's not going to be complete full forward capable of playing immense games where he ticks all the boxes. 

He's never going to be a pressing/tackling beast, as you said he definitely needs a big bodied lad next to him who will take do some of this dirty work/clear space.

Without someone doing this, his lesser attributes are highlighted more, not debating that. 

We've tried some players next to him and it hasn't work, we've played without him and it's not really worked. Don't really have any other options this season aside from a couple of goat sacrifices to get Tmac back sooner to sit next to BBB.

JVR is worth trying IMO. He can't be too far away given he's been emergency the last couple of weeks.

I think JVR's intent and ability to stand and mark will compliment BBB's attributes well, and with Brown roaming higher up it possibly takes some of the load of JVR to have a fully capable 'AFL tank' yet.

ATM it just doesn't make sense to me to see Brown taking a mark on the wing only to turn and attempt to deliver to small forward targets. It might work, it might not, but we need to try something actually new if we're going to keep throwing the forward structure back and forth.

Not a lot of breaking lines from down back - which gives teams time to flood our forward line - maybe why heaps of inside 50's for not much reward???. Could do with Bowey in form disposal down back. Gus toughness and intercept ability missed down back - but plays well as a mid - only 1 of him..

Miss TMc big time as a link from high half forward. Plays like a winger at times.

Harmes speed and toughness would have been valuable. Maybe worth a go at half back?

JvR probably will not play this year. He is mobile so a surprise might be to bring him in for Melksham however I suspect playing Smith up forward for Casey last week signals he may replace Melksham. That will also leave a door open to play him back on say a mobile Curnow and move Petty or May forward or during game if necessary.

 

 

 

JVR for Melksham: Melky has done better than I thought but we need a more imposing and dynamic F50 presence to complement BB. I’d also like to see Max be able to roam a bit more a kick behind play, and not be sat on, scragged and kneed mercilessly as a sitting duck/key target in our forward pockets. JVR could give us a spark and a bit of unpredictability inside 50.

Bowey for Hibberd: line ball on whether it’s Hibbo, Hunt or Rivers out but - in the helter skelter of a finals-like game last night - I saw signs of decline in our Pig warrior. Hunt can play the lockdown role and has more pace/agility now. Bowey comes in as a much-needed, composed distributor down back.

Harmes for Jordon: Jordon very stiff but I see Brayshaw as an upgrade on the wing (have been waiting for him to play there all season), particularly heading into finals, and Harmes slots into the midfield rotation. Despite a relatively quiet game, Sparrow to remain for now. His strength, explosiveness and ability to score are suited to September football. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Harmesy came in for Tom, and Jordon remained on the wing as reward for a more consistent season than his housemate.

Changing a couple of players won’t make much difference imo

It should be minimal changes from here.  You want a pretty settled side going into finals.  I think Goody knows what the best side looks like.  He's decided we need to go with the smaller forward line and use Gawn down there as the second tall.  I personally don't like it, because we are a much better side when he's on the ball, but it is what it is with McDonald unavailable.  It will require enormous defensive pressure from our smaller forwards - something that was lacking last night.

Really probably only Bowey would be in serious consideration for a recall from outside of last nights 23.  McDonald won't be ready.  Harmes for Melksham for mine.

Harmes will come back in for somebody. No other change unless an injury we don't know about.

Jackson needs to go, he is offering nothing up forward, and getting in the way of the midfielders when he is rucking.

Adjudicating and then tallying “Pressure Acts” is laughable.
Stats for stats sake.

1.2 points for “corralling” ,  struth ! 
May as well give them a point for running to the bench.

Vastly more valuable to the team by winning the ball and using it well than knocking up cheap stats for chasing an opponents  ar.. 

I thought it was a non negotiable that every player gives his all, which includes chasing etc.

1. Overhandballing.  It drives me crazy.  We often go around in circles.  Dees 200 kicks 210 handballs (pies 200 kicks 100 handballs ).  Often we handballed when free and running, straight to a player under pressure.  Reference example - Jacko to ANB in last qtr. Guess what tackle and turnover.  
2. Kicking to the deep forward pocket - WTF. We target the hardest spot to convert from. That’s a reason why our conversion is so low.  And of course those stupid “bomb” sky high kicks that go 50 metres in the air 
3. Missing easy chances. Salem (at qtr time … unforgivable from 20 metres out).  Gawn twice. Fritsch. We should have been 7 goals up at 1/2 time. 
4. wide and wide and slow and kick to a contest.  JJ and Lingers are stars but we don’t always have to go via the cape. (We need to play the corridor more).

1. Contested marking in the forward 50 (or at least bringing it to ground) 

2. Crumbing of the pack in the forward 50 when opportunity arises  

3. Four quarters of footy, not just the 1st half.  Turning up in the second half and playing attacking footy in the last quarter

I am thinking we need to rejig our set up to maximise our chances of winning the flag. I think our MCG problem is still alive and it only really went away when we played a smaller more mobile forward line at the start of last year. The wins at the start of this season were against lower sides and we are now getting a bit found out with better opposition. (Playing finals in Adelaide and Perth actually suited us and helped us win the flag IMO.)

With TMac still injured, the best solution is to have Petty replace Brown as full forward and Tomlinson come back into defence. (Turner is also an option.) Van Rooyen is not ready to be the sole key target at AFL level, albeit he could come in to replace Melksham. I am 50/50 on this, as it usually takes time to adjust to AFL level.

Petty played five games as a forward in 2019 and was very promising, averaging 1.2 goals, 1.2 contested marks, 11 pressure acts and 3 tackles. In contrast, Brown’s 2022 averages are 1.7 goals, 1.3 contested marks, 6.2 pressure acts and 0.6 tackles. So, the Petty for Brown move potentially reduces goal scoring and finishing but brings greater forward pressure and similar contested marking.

Harmes should come back in for Spargo or ANB, who is out of form.
