Well I don’t know why I thought I saw him play with Bowey but I was obviously wrong. I think Laurie might get his debut this week then. I think we have to blood a tall forward with MacDonald out but I think Weideman may still get the nod over Van Rooyen because of his frame, but we shall see. Hopefully Jackson will play better if he sniffs another premiership.

Geelong snrs really out muscled and hustled dees. Dunstan will replace Oliver. Bedford will also make way. You’d think they’d replace him with a forward?

based on the bits i saw, laurie looked really good working super hard to get to from contest to contest, and then didn't waste it when he had it

jvr's mark and goal from distance superb late in the last quarter of a slog of a game, but i have no idea if his fitness is strong enough play at afl intensity

the sort of weather suits dunstan; not so much baker, rivers, hunt etc.

Might have been in pre season?

Will all come down to if Sparrow survives or not I reckon, might be a nice one to start in.

JVR amazing contested mark - yes, a Demon took a contested mark - and a clutch goal from 50

Will JVR  and Laurie debut next week?

Hunt promoted, JVR and Laurie step up to the big time, perhaps think of Rivers getting a run to replace Clarry as he is good on the ground pick-ups and has conditioned knowledge of the seniors' game plan. We have the space of the season (sitting Second on the ladder) to give it a try - win or lose - so we must stop thinking about getting back to No. 1 on the ladder, anyway.

Really liked Laurie's game.

Jacob van Roo. showed plenty

Chandler is very confident at this level.

Hunt and Dunstan played well.

Plenty for the selectors to think about.

Chandler has talents, no doubt - but I'd like to see him come into the seniors as a raging bull type of player with more confidence and aggro. More developmental opportunities (as pathways to resultant success) could produce a player in the mould of Leigh Matthews (at least along those lines of talent) as our current smalls lack grunt and to some extent, bravery.

I watched the second half and JVR looks like the heir apparent to T-Mac. He's around the same height and can play that same tall, marking link role between the midfield and forward line. Really exciting prospect. We should move his family over here now before Freo make their inevitable play in a year or two.

Because of his frame?

When does Weid ever use his frame? The difference between Weid and JVR is that Weid like a to fly for marks, generally from behind. JVR reads the flight better and stands under the ball. JVR is more  like T Mac.

If our coaches are worried about JVR's lack of size, why the hell have they got him playing 2nd ruck at Casey in the past 2 weeks, competing against guys over 200cm?

JVR will take the 3rd best defender, after BBB and Fritsch. He's ready now.

Great to see Laurie get so much footy. He should be getting 25+ at that level if he wants to push for AFL.

van Rooyen will be a beast at AFL level but I think he’s a 2023 story.

Woewodin has a lot of composure and balance and plays like his father. I think he’s got a future.

Rosman played well in the last quarter in particular.

There were several instances where JVR did clever little "football-smarts" things that I really liked the look of. Things that reflect a genuine competitive instinct. E.g. leading for a mark near the boundary around 50, being closely followed by a defender, he jumped into the air to secure a chest mark rather than attempt a spoilable arms-out mark with the wet ball. He certainly doesn't look skinny or under-developed physically - I'd love to see him get a gig in the ones. If he fills that TMac-esque re up fwd it could go a long way towards fixing our woes in that dept.

Would they drop Toby for a NT game, when he actually did more than Kozzie/Spargo?

I would rest Spargo for a week.

Went down the highway to moggydishu last night. First time I had actually stopped there in 5 decades.

What an appalling ground. It is one thing to spend money on a desal plant we didn't need and cancelling a road we did need, but spending our money on that abomination is unbelievable.

Thought Weideman and JvR acquitted themselves quite well considering the at times torrential rain making conditions a nightmare for key forwards. Must say thay JvR looks to have superceeded Weideman already though with impressive contested marking and body work.

I'm hoping at least one of JvR or Laurie gets a debut, both have earned it in my opinion.

6 Bailey Laurie

5 James Munro

4 Jayden Hunt

3 Jacob van Rooyen

2  Luke Dunstan

1 Taj Woewodin

Honourable mentions;

Deakyn Smith

Kade Chandler

Jake Melksham

Adjudication;

sCats seemingly got the run of the kitty litter 2nd & 3rd quarter. As another poster waggishly suggested umpires needed to get keys to leave town.

Broadcast;

Guy in the left stereo channel needs to seriously review his thesaurus / dictionary, 'treacle' ain't trickle when referring to ball rolling out of bounds slowly. Plus its Taj not Ty Woewodin!

Opposition Hyperbole;

Luke Dahlhaus 'just going' about as well as his former team mates. Early retirement forecast.

Overall Comment;

Casey Demons appeared to be 'gone', goal less whilst the sCats kicked eight unanswered goals after a terrific first quarter six goals to zip. In tough conditions turned it around lead by the young guns, Bailey Laurie BOG, Jacob van Rooyen and Kade Chandler. IMHO given that the chances of a win appeared to be rapidly sinking in the Corio Bay downpour. Bailey Laurie's lead from the front performance was the best by a yet to debut listed player for the season. His promotion to the seniors deserves serious consideration by selectors.

* Demonland Fact Checker

Claims by a poster with the Leslie Nielsen avatar that Laurie and Chandler are "four foot two" have been fact checked at the MFC website and suggest he made a blue. Laurie is closer to an imperial 5' 10" at 179cm and Chandler 5'9" at 175cm, both could be described as 'nuggety' in the old school parlance at 81kg and 80kg.

    MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

    Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

    Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
