I'm even more confident now that I've seen both teams.

Man they are so tall up fwd! Rivers, Hunt and Sales with have a field day running off them

Gawn May play HB early for insurance.

Add English to Bruce, Naughton, Hagan, Schache. That crazy tall

Harmes back in to do a repeat number on Libba. Right call.

Schache and Hannan in for the Doggies doesn't worry me at all

My confidence just went up a notch

He is copying the tactic of his mentor Clarkson from last week where the Hawks tall forwards troubled our backs in that they negated the intercept marks. I would be surprised if they line up that way.

Let the games begin, very interesting. Like Harmes back and Demonland’s much loved Ump number 22 might be getting some comments come game day I’m guessing.

This his to be the reason, Bevo is out of his mind if he thinks that could work on a wet MCG

Probably not their final line up.  Expect a late change or two.

I hate that umpire! Why would you let such a poor quality umpire anywhere near the best game of the round?
He has already given the Dogs 8 random frees and it’s not even game day yet.

That’s exactly my thinking. Last week I was nervous every time the ball went long into our D50 only because every time the hawks talls bought the ball to ground, their smalls were first at the ground ball. I worry about Weightman, Hunter, Smith swooping in the ground ball. Midfield pressure has to ramp up so their F50 entries come from dump kicks. That’s where our intercept marking comes into play

Schache is their version of Weeds. Not overly concerned about them bringing Hannan and him into their side.

I’m happy with our team but Viney needs to play a blinder.

Some of you people laughing at Bevo could have egg all over your faces. And that is not just with the result Sat night. He probably does not care if the tallish forward line works or not but is willing to try it. He will be looking at finals and the various out comes in playing us then. He wont be worried if they lose Sat night as they have easier draw and if they finish 3rd or 4th wont bother him either as it will be us or Geelong in the qualifyings. And that may even be over at mcgowanville.

Agree. I'm certainly not laughing. It's the sort of forward lineup, rain or not, that could cause us problems, especially if the boys are as dismissive on the night, and don't work hard to ensure the backline isn't being put under constant unnecessary pressure. And yeah he's rightfully playing around with the mix, something we could with as well. Hopefully Goody is saving some tricks for finals.

Viney to Libba.  Harmes takes the Bont.

Harmes is a definite improvement over AVB but would have liked to see Melksham as well

Don't rate that at all. Harmes needs to go to Libba.

More fool them. Lever prefers summer rolls

I used't to love a summer roll as well, especially with a leg over!

Too old now and can't remember

It is the blueprint to beat us, so not surprised at all. Just have to ensure that the midfield brings an extra level of defensive intensity and sustains it for 4 quarters.

Is it, though?

It's one thing to stop May and Lever taking intercept marks, but you then have to do something with it when the ball hits the deck.

I'm sure, though, that they won't have all of Naughton, Bruce, Ugle-Hagan, Schache and English forward at once. Most likely English/Bruce will be in the ruck, and one of the others will be on the bench, meaning three at a time with mediums/smalls around them.

Ugle-Hagan was good last week but nowhere the week before when the pressure was on vs Sydney. Schache is just meh.

My concern remains, as it would have been regardless of selection, on Naughton and their midfield.

The Harmes-Libba thing is interesting.

Do we do it again because it worked so well last time, or do we avoid it because they may have prepared for it and either it won't be as effective, or we could maybe surprise them by sending Harmes to someone else?

I'm inclined to think Libba won't be tagged out of it by the same player twice in one year, so I'm not sure it will work as well for us again this time.

Let's just hope it's not Hannans 1 good game for the year.

Could go either way.

If we lose, don't get sucked into the hype about the Bulldogs or the Dees

If we win, don't get sucked into the hype about the Dees or the Bulldogs.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
