Nathan Buckley Steps Down as Collingwood Coach

I'd be happy to see Mark Neeld return to coaching at Collingwood.  Or Carlton.  I'm not fussy.

Meanwhile, good to see past players playing tribute to Bucks ...

Go Colingwood!

I think this is a really bad move for the Pies.

With the instability with the board, the only stability they had was the coaching staff and now they wont have that there.
A bunch of senior players about to drop off, it will take them 4-5 years to play finals again... which I am sure we all won't mind

Other than Neale Daniher in 07, I can't recall another time a coach announced they were leaving mid-year, then had another game.

The notion that teams play better immediately after a coach is fired has been around for a long time, but not sure if there's any definitive proof to back it up.

mark williams did the same at the pear

Exactly my question. It seems so counter-intuitive to me, almost a slap in the face to the outgoing coach when you think about it.

"Sorry Bucks, I know we've been terrible all year leading to your downfall as coach. But we love you, so we're gonna play properly this weekend for your last game and beat the best team in the comp"

5 days until the game is played, so if the filth players’ build it up they will be mentally drained. If they love him so much, why have they played so poorly for him. Should’ve been doing it for him the entire time.

No doubt they’ll play more aggressive, we’ll just get them on the counter (it’s how we split open the Lions in the 2nd half).

If our boys turn up to play, we bank the 4 points.

I’m glad he stayed on for the QB game. Only reason we lose is if we don’t turn up. I sometimes think it’s the week after with the caretaker coach that they play out of their skin.  The clogged and confused thinking of why the team was underperforming is replaced by some new simple message that frees a team up.  Then after a while, sometimes just 1 week, other coaches work out the new approach and its back to losing. Kind of like Carlton under Teague.

The extra burden which comes with honoring someone typically leads to poorer not better performance. See St Kilda v Melb rd 2, Spuds game.

It's a good development in terms of ensuring our boys aren't complacent about the game. Still reckon we win. Remember there's a good reason why Buckley has been forced out.

I've seen his new girlfriend , can't blame a man for wanting to spend more time with the family

Buckley can clearly coach and should probably be a premiership coach already. But he's in an absolute basket case of a club at the moment with upheaval at every level of the club since the exit of Eddie.

It reminds me of The Death of Stalin.

So who plays the abhorrent Beria, Eddie McGuire? Marginalized but still attempting to pull strings as the wannabe puppet master. Eddie not unlike Peter Sellars reprising Dr Strangelove, is capable of multiple roles in this black and white comedy, so will also play Stalin the newly deceased dictator).  Mark Korda is typecast as Malenkev the heir apparent. Bridie O'Donnell courtesy of central committee casting will be Sventlana. Tony Shaw hideous choice, (there was no one else available) plays Vasily purely for his comic slapstick. That leaves Jeff Browne as a cunning Machiavellian figure, manipulating his ascent to power as Nikita Khrushchev. Throw in Peter Moore as Molotov and Nathan Buckley can enjoy his Figjam on crumpet.

It will be interesting to see how Robert Harvey goes. It's been well known that he wants a senior coaching role. But how many times have clubs been persuaded by the short-term results of an interim coach and felt compelled to give them the job permanently? It worked for Sydney and Paul Roos, but I suspect there have been more misses than hits. Examples of "mistakes" include Rhyce Shaw, Geoff Gieschen, and possibly David Teague. All perfectly fine Assistant Coaches but unable to succeed when given the top job after stepping in before the end of the season.

Not concerned about Monday at all. As long as we're switched on it should be business as usual. Surprised that they're letting him coach one more game though. As for their next permanent coach who's to say it won't be Robert Harvey who has been very close to a senior coaches position in the past. It's just a matter of time before Adem Yze is also snapped up by someone but not before the end of this season I'd imagine.

Maybe Buckley is doing us a favor. Could result in more pies fans turning up in sydney thereby improving our take?

I hope our boys can smell the blood in the water on Monday and act accordingly.

Time for a 10+ goal win.

Go Demons.

Such a pity this won’t be at the G. The Pies would have paid their respects to bucks.

Gut feel is this is to do with Carlton and not wanting them to get a head start on potential coaching prospects. it seems that maybe they all knew this would happen at the end of the year, but the timeline has been moved forward.

damn. Why couldn't he wait till the bye.

Because then he would have been sacked.

Yes. Buckley has a great footy mind and Collingwood are foolish to get rid of him. Its quite clear they don't have the cattle at the club to compete

I wouldn't be rushing to sign him up look at the connection for about 5 years (2014/17 and 2020/21) between the defence/mids and his forward  line and really  the team did not in 2018/19 kick enough goals to win a flag.

Best they make the call now as it's so uncertain about the Board  they can't even start plans go the future as the Coach position is uncertain.

The results now if 10 games are irrelevant to 2022 and beyond but it means the issue of judging Buckley is out of the equation and players are free to play with no shackles or restrictions  fir their futures!

They're playing for their careers as well remember

If ever there was a match I want a 4 quarter match from it would be this week. They will no doubt be up for it early but emotion can drain you quite quickly, I would love to see him sent off in the same way Roos was sent off from us.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
