"Luke Jackson won't make it as a ruckman" Dwayne Russell 3/12/20

Was listening to SEN and Derwayne mentioned that Jackson won't make it as a ruck and the only way he'll carve a career in this league is if he's played exclusively as a key forward.

Is he jumping the gun?

Does he have a point?

Was Jackson that poor in his one game as starting ruck V's North and as a relief ruckman in his other 5 games?

Be interested to hear what you all think his best position will be.

Thought Russell was being a little too harsh on the back of a 200cm kid having a 6 game taste.

Here is the actual audio.

I heard a bit of this diatribe as i was leaving the house.
Dwayne considers his opinions as solid fact and then runs with it all afternoon.
LJ could be the number one player in the game in 2-3 years time.
dwayne could only dream of such heights.
He still believes Jeelong is in a Premiership Window...

The kid has just turned 19 FCS.  Coincidentally, 19 is Dwayne's IQ.

Dwayne Russell. “Built like Tarzan and played like Jane”.  He was projected himself as a superstar but was a bit of a dud. Can’t believe his opinion gets any credit.

Jackson will be one of the most exciting players to watch in the next few years.  He’s raw but you can see his energy. Perhaps the most athletic ruckman since Natanui/Grundy with his follow up work.

My only knock on Jackson is “he is from WA” and the “go home” offers on big $$$ from the Eagles and Freo will come sooner rather than later.

Goldstein won the hit outs, but I thought Jacko did more around the ground.

The question is not: will he make it as a ruck?

The question should be: what else can he do to maximise his value?

Personally I think we shouldn’t try to make him in to Grundy but rather aim for something like Goodes. Mid/forward/ruck utility.

I’d have him spending time on the wing as well as forward and ruck this year.

Who cares what people think about him. Jackson like all our players has it in his own hands whether he can be effective in various roles. Let actions talk.

Unfortunately our players over the years have tended to deliver less than what they're capable of...hence commentators seemingly 'picking on' the MFC. Hopefully Jackson is one of the guys to start turning the tide.

Agree.

I would be disappointed if we try and make him the main ruck. That position is fading in relevance and is more easily filled by a dinosaur as most clubs tend to do these days.

Ahh yes. Mods, please change the date to 3 December if you wouldn't mind.

wouldn't bother, not like derwayne is going to be some historic figure where we had to remember the date and where we were when he made his declaration on luke jackson

The day I no longer have to listen to Dwayne Russell commentate will be a nice day

I think the best footy commentator is the one with laryngitis at the time.

To be fair though, it is just am opinion and we all know they are just like bums ( the polite word ), everybody has one.

Makes no sense at all from Dwayne.

However with how redundant the ruck position has become I'd much rather see LJ become a star forward.

LJ will be a gun and I suspect another East Freo boy (Carroll) will be drafted to allow the Dees to have a WA flavour with the hope they stick together at the Dees. Where will he end up playing will depend on the coach, game plan, opportunities etc. But I believe he will be a jet as a forward ruck combo

Totally with you here 'Dee'...

He has so many strings to his bow I'm sure we won't restrict him as a pure ruck and use him were we need him best.

Even Goody said he could be used as a mid.

Goodes is an excellent comparison.

Surely you are exaggerating - missed the decimal point - 1.9

In the mid 1950s the greatest coach of all time had a brilliant and totally innovative idea.  Instead of running two lumbering ruckman and a rover follow the ball around all day, of course with “resting” ruckman in the forward and back pockets, he had this young athletic guy named Barassi who would run around doing a bit of ruck work and a bit of roving, and a bit of goal kicking when “resting” forward.  The first ruck-rover was invented.
Young Jackson fits the rôle, and hopefully takes part in a similar age of success as did young RDB.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 13 vs Collingwood

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
