Well I guess if Goodwin doesn't perform then Pert will also depart  Very brave call in my opinion

Perform surely must mean top 4 and deep into finals

And if that happens Pert will have got away with a slight of hand trick and we the supporters will be the losers. I have never rated him. Hope I am wrong but he seems like one of the 70s footballers who went into Sales and ended up running this or that company with no formal training.

My concern is that Greg Stafford seems to be playing musical chairs with his role at the club. First came in as Ruck Coach, then migrated to Goal Kicking Coach, now he’s our Forward Coach. I guess if we throw enough chit at the wall eventually it’ll stick?

Yes, or maybe he's shown aptitude and has progressed.

Well I am certainly not surprised by the results of the review but I am far from impressed with the outcomes of it.

I mean at what point does a coach in his fourth year on the back of three years of a succession plan by a premiership coach feel the heat. Improvements in game plan, performance consistency and skill execution all seem to fall under the coaches watch all with an improving list.

I have no faith in anyone making any important decisions at this club.

While I agree with some of that trout I think we have to look at the reality of the world we now find ourselves in for 2021.

There is no chance that we were ever going to sack Goodwin with 2 years left on his contract.
Reduced spending and the need to stay in the black finically over the next 3 years is as important as winning a flag. The MFC needs a finals appearance in 2021 and remain outside of needing AFL assistance.
With the current list we should be able to make 7th- 8th.
right now in spite of what they say we are on a one year plan.

Make the eight next year without losing money in preparation for a big 2022 with a number of changes.

I read it that Richardson is Goodwin's boss.

Not sure it was smooth sailing when it was the other way round so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

The biggest problem I have with this LH is that Richardson doesn’t seem to have been a roaring success anywhere yet.

Melbourne has backed coach Simon Goodwin to take the club back to finals next season as it yesterday moved director of coaching Alan Richardson into a new performance role.

Demons chief executive Gary Pert told the Herald Sun on Monday night his exhaustive review of the club involving countless interviews had made clear Goodwin was the man to lead the club forward.

He was very well regarded as an assistant coach and he got just about the worst job possible at the Saints. He won more games there than a whole lot of coaches would’ve. Balme’s the best in the business and his Demons coaching career was hardly stellar.

I have more confidence in Richo’s judgment than Mahoney’s. The whole structure seems wrong to me but as a temporary measure in a huge budget cut it might be the best we can do.

There’s know doubt finances have played a big part in the outcomes of the review old dee. One of my worries is what happens if we don’t make finals next year, how can Pert sack Goodwin and not go himself after his review has clearly identified there are major issues with Goodwins coaching. Next year is the biggest year I can remember for this club.

I don't like it. The structure seems wrong and there's hardly any fresh blood (Yze the exception). We need to refresh our coaching structure, we need a real forwards coach not a makeshift one who has been moved sideways. I'm not really sold on Chaplin either, he's never filled me with much confidence but I guess the defence performed well this year whether that was on him or the playing personnel is to be seen.

Mahoney has gone from being in the race for CEO to having his role split in half and given a token task sitting on the committee to sort out the new base. If he's not up to the role of GM of Football then move him on for someone who is up to it. Richardson has been appointed to the other half of the role by the mere fact he was already contracted so we had to do something.

The club needs to be aiming for top 4 next year, anything below top 6 is another fail. This "review" does not fill me with any confidence whatsoever.

The one positive might be that if Goodwin and this new plan flop we can scrap all these changes and just start fresh. Richardson goes back to a primary coaching role, Mahoney moves out and we get a fresh GM with a fresh coach to completely redo things.

This seems a compromise under pandemic circumstances trying to move people as best we can.

Agreed, and disappointed. At least it gives Yze a season to adjust, upwards against the strife that no doubt is about to continue.

I can't see why people are ruling out Stafford as forwards coach just because he wasn't a forward. Coaching is about teaching, not about whether you are or were great at a particular thing yourself - and it's not like he has no elite footy background, if that's important to you; 204 games and 141 goals.

Given he's been at the Club in ruck and goal-kicking roles for quite a while, we should have a very good idea of what he's like as a coach.

The split in football and list management is odd to me.

If it was admin and footy split I can understand it better but list management and trading and management of the cap goes hand in hand with what the FD are thinking.

I know they will talk to each other but where the buck stops is important and has endless implications.

Isnt the end of the world, just don’t think it will last.

We are at a critical point in the Clubs history so for me it is a simple question of, does he have a record of being a good forward coach?

Tough on Balmey that's 25 years ago and in his early coaching stint.

Nearly every one else was either in short Panse or duffle costs at least.

At least there are some additions to coaching  to be finalised so who knows what May transpire.

Changes to Assistants was identified by all and sundry and that's taking place. That is a good start,
We are very quick to half glass empty people on this site and often expect a magician to evolve out if a rabbit even if it his first gig.

Much responsibility has to be allocated to some players to shape up or ship out and about Half a dozen are in that category that Mahoney seems to be giving a ninth live following some real glimpses, disappointing cameos of inconsistency and real average team roles not being performed or identified to in the game plan which although an improvement is still only when we play well and seem to abandon the moment a modicum if pressure is applied from the opposition.
All are under severe pressure in 2021and as we/ I will keep exampling the Cats in 2007 and Tigers a decade later in 2017 displayed there true worth with hassled and pressured coaches so what are  we to do In a similar situation With a supposedly inferior list.

A 1998 or 2018 response or even better?

We await with bated breath fir trade and list movements and the new FD and Coaching appointments to move Mountains in Goody's game plan/s.

FGS Burgo no injuries again like this year!

Observations

1.  Corporate message from a corporate CEO.  Classic modern day messaging. Classic corporate ambiguity, adjectives and elite speak.

2. Simon needs more support. But we have lost 3-4 support coaches so I’m puzzled as to how the extra support is created. Richo must still be in the box on game day (?!?!)

3. Greg Stafford as forward line coach. Really. That’s a bizarre choice given he was just a ruckman.  And as goalkicking coach, he was working alongside Fritsch this year! .  That needs further thought.

4. Ruck coach? Skills and development coach? Strategy and opposition analysis?  Casey coach??
Obviously some gaps that need to be filled. Modern day footy might be tighter but you at least need basic roles filled.

It's hard to give Goodwin extra support when you have to slash 3 million dollars from your football department spending, that's a lot of wages. Was it not yze job at the Hawks strategy and opposition analysis, every coach  is going to have to do more then one job, that will be likely one of Adam's jobs, that goes along with being the midfield coach.

Key thing out of this was they at least did an actual review. Pathetic to even say this but I feel that is a massive tick in an age where clubs can say they are actively doing things like this and then conveniently forgetting or just talking to staff and calling it a review.

Coaching changes had to be made and I'm excited about Yze taking the midfield group. But is he just a line coach? Who is the right hand man for Goodwin?

Also why is having Greg Stafford, an extremely credible ruck coach the right guy to take our forwards? Not trying to be smart I'd just have liked a bit more on the reasoning behind some of these moves. Could have saved a lot of toilet paper reading by just saying "We've got one new addition, Yze. That is all"

I'm interested to know what the new position Ben Matthews is moving to because if it involves standing around in the box or sidelines with the Ipad in the hand studying the metrics with a nervous look on his face he'll slam dunk it.

We have to to trim 3 million from our soft cap. Did people think this was going to equal more coaches??

Why would they bring that up, it doesn't suit their aganda to criticize the review, the ones that are criticizing it, are the same posters that criticize the club about everything, they know who any are.

With forward coach's do you know many great forwards that took up coaching, most coaches seem to be midfielders and back pocket players, maybe there are just not any  former forwards that are in coaching.

Maybe he will be ok but the problem is our forward structure is deplorable and one of the worst coached areas of our side. Our forwards do not know how to create space, how to work for each other, how to set up and play as a unit. Stafford does not have the experience to teach that particularly with Brown coming in fresh, Weideman needing to take the next step and Kossie needing guidance if he is to become a key part of our team moving forward.

Instead of someone with experience and a fresh perspective we have just moved one of our existing staff sideways. Similar to the "review" of 2019 there is hardly any new blood in at all, all just shuffling deckchairs. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating though and ultimately the results early next season will tell us if this has been a success or not. No second chances, if we don't improve in 2021 (and by improve I mean show real evolution in our gameplan and structures and a dedication to playing every minute of every game at the required effort) Goodwin will be done and so will the rest of them bar Yze I would imagine.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
