2020 Player Reviews: #38 Mitch Brown

The Demons gave the former Geelong and Essendon player a football lifeline in 2020 but used him only sparingly. Despite this, he proved to be capable in his five games which included an excellent 20 possession (13 marks) effort against the Bombers in the final round which earned him 2 Brownlow votes.

Date of Birth: 28 August, 1990

Weight: 95kg

Proved his value in the last few games. Should be a regular for his consistency. Would be nice to some some kind of reliability up forward.

Wonder how much impact the potential Brown trade has on Brown staying on the list in 2021.

I'd think there was only room for one.

However he was a rookie, so if that could be extended, maybe. And if Tmac goes, that mightbe enough to keep a depth KPF.

It might depend on where they see Petty playing, which might depwnd on what happens to Omac and Hore.

Clearly just a battler, but works hard and is definitely worth another year on the list. If we could splice his head on to Weideman's body we'd have a very good player.

I hope he battles the NQR forwards for a spot.

The biggest problem with VFL is that you are into round 4 of the AFL season before it even starts. Makes it hard for fringe players even in a "normal" year

Honest, old school footballer with smarts. Can take a grab, knows where to go, Can kick.

There's a spot for him in our disfunctional fwd line.

There's nothing honest, consistent or reliable about him.

Apart from the occasional strong chest mark he refuses to put his body on the line and jump with outstretched arms and therefore can't be trusted to compete in the air.

He'll play well one week when given time and space, he does lead hard and well for the ball, but the entire structure of the side falls down when you've got talls who don't compete.

He was dreadful against Sydney, which led to him being dropped for the Freo game and them trying Preuss (a predictable failure).

If we trade for Ben Brown I wouldn't bother keeping Mitch on the list. We have assume BenB, Weid, Jackson are all ahead of him and Petty should be too if he's progressing well. 4 key forwards is enough. Use the list space elsewhere.

Harsh

He put his body on the line against St Kilda. Went back with the flight of the ball on the near flank in the 4th quarter and copped a huge hit for his troubles.

If TMac moves on he’ll provide cover and decent cover at that. Worth his spot imv.

This moment

I like what Mitch brings to the side. If he is the 25th - 30th player on the list, we have good cover up forward and around the ground. I hope he gets another year to show his wares.

He spent 3 quarters avoiding contact and then he went back with the flight and dropped a chest mark. Which I said he does. But watch him running at a high incoming kick, he doesn’t get his arms up and open his body.

Jackson’s a year older and Petty should be back. 4 key forwards is enough, use the extra spot on developing players.

196cm key forward  Can Mark and is a good long kick. I thought he was stiff not to play some early games after a flop game against the Eagles. Played 4 of the last 5 games and his last 2 games against GWS and Essendon  were outstanding and  was part of the reason  we won.

IMO he deserves another year and will be good insurance to have around.  Turning 31 in 2021 but looks in good nick.

Was perplexed as to why we brought him over to the club. Albeit some decent showings from a mature player, he isn't apart of the club's future and cohesion is too potent of an ingredient for success.

Would keep him on the rookie list for depth, but wouldn't be playing him over other forwards if they aren't injured.

Mitch Brown shows versatility and moves well for a big man. Deserves at least one more season with his marking and kicking skills alone. A couple of Essendon mates were not happy when he was delisted at Essendon. Lets not make the same mistake. Showed that he can play as a defender as well.

Exactly. His last 6 weeks showed he’d go around again in 2021. Virtually BOG versus bombers in round 18 which stuck it up the Essenbummers.

He should have been given more games earlier.  Good mark. Good kick. Agile. Knows his limitations.  Rookie deal costs us shillings compared to a Tmc deal.

Get his 1 year deal signed off “yesterday”.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
