Mumford Fined For Punching Gawn

It seems to have gone unnoticed that the Battleship Mumford was fined a Grand for punching Gawn in the back of the head in the second quarter. He sure dished it out on Saturday. It reminded me of the old lawless days when most sides had a hit man.

The other thing I noticed is that Langdon simply plays old fashioned footy. He runs, he's great at finding space and when he gets it, he kicks it, the way Brian Dixon used to. I do wish, however, the lad would aim a bit straighter.

Noticed it on the replay, fair whack to the back/side of the head. 

Surprising no fine for the whack he gave Oliver too.

Total thug. Unacceptable in this day and age. Pathetic he has not copped more criticism, though unsurprising given footy media is dominated by ex footballers who are almost meat heads - meat heads who instinctively say no case to answer for every hit. 

But there is some justice. In game decided by 5 points Mumford gifted us a goal when the ball was clear of our 50 and IIRC another he gave away on the wing ended with a goal being kicked (i think)

The AFL are not going to undermine their finacial investment in GWS - weak as [censored] and totally exposes the double standards at play.

The MFC should be protesting loudly at this.  ANB should publicly ask the AFL why he gets suspended for an action which accidentally caused injury to the head when big Mummy is only finned for an action which quite intentionally did.  It's likely he'd cop another fine for bringing the game into disrepute, within the ironical context of the AFL in effect bringing it into disrepute through it's blatant double standards and failure to protect players from gutless snipers like Mummy.

He was almost being applauded for his efforts on the night. They were certainly laughing about it and not taking it seriously. Then again the AFL don't take it seriously by their own actions. Sure they talk a good game when it comes to wanting to stamp out gut punches and sling tackles and making the head sacrosanct but they always fail to follow up with sanctions that would deter that behaviour.

The AFL invalidate themselves when they turn a blind eye to bigger names and not penalising expansion clubs.

What amazes me (but it shouldn't) that the AFL go on about reducing head injuries, and yet allow this thuggery to happen, there is a class action heating up by Bleese and others, and yet they condone this by not giving out the right punishment . And the way the commentators were drooling over it on Saturday night was sickening. I bet if Gawn's mum had called in they would have been put in their place.

im flabbergasted by what this thread claims is  the Match Review response to the Oliver incident .Mumford all but removed Clarrys head from his shoulders with a swinging arm when Clarry was as open as a gate .He was in trainers arms until the quarter ended and started the next quarter on the bench in an apparent attempt to recover .I was acutely concerned that he would take no further part in the game .I assumed (foolishly it seems ) that there was no penalty by Match Review as the case went straight to the tribunal .Am to understand that there was no penalty at all for this case of wanton thuggery ?Surely this cant be the case .

Mumford has got away with quite a bit for striking over the years That was a forced punch to the back of the head. I thought the head was a no no.   So intentional and yet a fine ?   The drugs must be really ( censored ) up his brain completely.

I think it could be his last season and l will be glad to see the back of him.     P.....s Off   FFS.

The Oliver incident was a disgraceful act of thuggery that would have done Jack Dyer or Ted Whitten proud, but which except it seems in the case of GW$ player Mumford would nowadays be severely sanctioned.

I'm glad he got some kind of sanction for his whack to Gawn after the match at least, really annoyed me that the commentators were almost enjoying watching him be a blatant thug. The one on Gawn in particular he was two players back and deliberately went the fist into Max's head.

The Oliver one as well should've surely been a fine, again totally deliberate and designed to inflict pain.

I think Mumford is a thug, but I didn't think the Oliver one was bad at all

Oliver was falling into the tackle, Mumford was crouching and his arm was angled down, and his first contact was Oliver's arms. Momentum in both directions caused the tackle to bounce high

Looking in slowmo, it appears Oliver ate some of his own hand

I used to like Mummy back in the Sydney days, was quite the hitout merchant and really helped them to that flag in 2012, but he's clearly past it and resorting to some other methods in his twilight. He isn't the first and won't be the last. 

I did like seeing Trac get stuck into him shortly after the Clarry episode!

This is exactly what I posted previously. Punch a bloke in the head, but don’t concuss him or break his jaw and you can get off with a fine. Tackle a bloke and cause a concussion and you get 4 weeks,  if you are a no name player. That is a joke.

This is an example of why the afl tribunal system is a joke. There has to be an element of intention considered as well as effect. Anb never meant for his tackle to induce a concussion (4 weeks) but mumford clearly summed up the contest and thought [censored] it ill hit the back of his head as hard as i can (fine). A joke of a system.
