Yeah he should've stayed at Hawthorn forever like Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis did.

Had to laugh at Kennett imploring Smith & Gunston to be "one club players".

They pinched Gunston from Adelaide.

They were all pensioned off by Clarko and told to get a deal elsewhere if they didn’t want to retire. This situation is completely different they offered Smith a 2 year deal and he left.

I’m grateful to Isaac Smith for moving across to Geelong where I’m sure that he’ll have an impact in 2021 and possibly in 2022. It was that third year of the contract he might have entered into with Melbourne that had me concerned and Smith’s own decision to go with 2 years confirmed that he has his own doubts. That makes it a win/win for all concerned.

Expect more big news from the Cats when the results of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety are handed down in February/March next year.

I'm aware of that, but if the Hawks wanted to establish a culture of experienced players mentoring the kids they would've actually drafted some kids and kept the veterans around for longer. Instead they went down the route of trading for a raft of experienced players and cleared space for them. Most Hawthorn supporters would prefer it wasn't the Cats but don't begrudge Smith for leaving, I doubt it makes any difference to his legacy.

Two of them didn't take the soft option to go to a top side and the other virtually got told to leave.

Mitchell left for a player coaching role. Suited both parties. He’s back there now and is being groomed to be the next coach.

Hodge and Lewis left for developing teams although to be fair Lewis left before he was pushed. Both would be welcome back in another capacity I’d reckon.

Smith left for the cats. Big difference. He had other options but chose a hated rival. Doubtful he’ll be as welcome as Hodge or Lewis in the future

Smith wanted a change. He felt stale at the Hawks and a lot of his mates had departed. He had respect for Clarkson but there was not much love between them  Its no surprise that  he wanted to go to a successful club and had doubts about the Dees. I’m told that privately he has been critical of the Dees and some of their playing personnel. Players backchatting teammates etc.

He only wanted another 2 years whichever club it was.

And as reported it seems he wants a lifestyle change and to get away from Melbourne.

Absolutely brilliant, WJ.  One of the best.

Anyway, and I didn’t want to say it when he was a possibility to join us, but I find him very unlikable; almost but not quite on the Goddard level, but close. (Maybe it was the smug look on his face at the last huddle when we beat them in that final 2018.)

Well if this just isn't a kick in the nuts. I'm not totally devo that we didn't get him. I'm just bitter that we were pipped at the last hurdle. Let's set our sights on a younger wingman and hope karma does the rest.

I'm not happy. Lewis doesn't seem to want to be an assistant and now an onfield leader has turned away at the last hurdle. Feel that we've blown opportunities bring in Hawthorn nous. So now we go all out for Phillips and Higgins, who are good, but young.

Still a interesting choice by Smith to me. He had the choice of running the deep wings at the G for a majority of games or running in traffic at Cardinia Park that has no wings. As Hawks supporters tell me he Doesn’t tackle and likes to have space to receive, and run. It will be interesting to see how he plays at Geelong next year.

Yea the players/coaches he played with don’t care, he won flags with them.

Bullet dodged.

Yep, you are a gun.

That Goodwin, Clarkson and Chris Scott really wanted him absolutely reinforces your innate ability to assess talent.

Some of the comments remind me of the following scenario*  ...

Ask a woman out ... get a knock back.

Response:  "I'm glad ... she wasn't much chop anyway".

*Never experienced by me personally, but have observed others ...   ?

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
