  • Gawn just had two weeks off. Has anyone ever had triple figures in hit outs?
  • Do you really want to debut Amartey against Gawn?

Everything else

  • Melbourne have won 4 of their last 5. They've got 5 midfielders who are at the top of their games in Petracca, Viney, Gawn, Oliver and Langdon (the last of whom has really come in the last month) as well as Steven May who is a dominant force at FB now.
  • Good test against an experienced, in form side but I don't have us as an impossible bet in this. If we bring our intensity again we can trouble Melbourne who are not consistent or reliable yet in my mind.
  • We will get smacked!!
  • Keep it within 4 goals and that's a win for us.
  • Melbourne are seriously average with their two way running and defensive pressure.
  • Our guys who like to run will have a field day with all the time and space the Dees will afford them.
  • With the Hawks furiously tanking, Pick 3 is in jeopardy.
  • I canโ€™t see us winning another game with the games ahead.
  • Itโ€™s the kind of game that the hapless Demons tend to stuff up with monotonous regularity.
  • Melbourne if they are half decent should see this week as a bit of a percentage booster unfortunately for us.
  • Melbourne are not that good, but we're definitely worse.
  • If we stay in the game for the first half I think they'll get scared.
  • Melbourne besides poor performances against the Bulldogs and the Power have been very competitive in most games this year.
  • They are clearly the better side, but imo, are weak as [censored]. Lucky to beat St Kilda and beat up teams worse than themselves.
  • We are worse but are not as weak, so if we can stay in the fight and not get blown away, Melbourne can definitely lose it for us.
  • Melbourne are soft as, just pretenders.. Can definitely win this.. I'd love nothing more if our boys beat them and stuffed up finals for them..
  • If we're in it at half time (either <12 points down) i reckon we'll win. It is Melbourne after all.
  • Interested to see how Fritsch goes - he might be in Red & White next year.

What's the context behind the Fritschย comment?

Good question, that was definitely out of the blue.ย

We definitely still have our reputation of wilting if a team brings the heat.ย

Bit of a mixed bag in that.

Mostly pretty reasonable analysis, but there isn't a lot of consistency in how they think they will fair against us, with a whole binch thinking they are going to get belted and the others think they are a fair bet.ย  To be honest, I could go either way from our perspective as well - think it could be close for a fair portion of the game, with us kicking away in the last like Adelaide/North, or we grind it out to the end for a modest win.

But I do think we will win.ย  We actually rarely loose to bottom sides these days.

Can anyone confirm if they get 4 points in this scenario.ย

Adelaide are runaway leaders on the "Keep it within 12 goals and that's a win for us" ladder.

Carlton and Gold Coast are in the brave effort Grand Final.ย

ย

Funny thing is, we have actually been pretty steady and predictable this year. Beating all the sides 11th-18th pretty comfortably, mixed bag with those 6th-10th, and then havenโ€™t beaten any of the top sides.

Sydney are in the 'try enough to only lose by a few goals' category with Hawthorn at the moment.

Thought the comments on our pressure are a little off.ย  Apart from the shocker of a third term against the Dogs, our general pressure and team defence have been excellent for a while now.

Itโ€™s interesting, werenโ€™t we expecting him to sign a two year deal back in late July? Still hasnโ€™t happened.ย

How different is it to read this, compared to the Pies, Tigers and Hawks fan sites? Most of it is reasonable, considered and articulate. I wonder how we stack up?

ย

Still have nightmares about round 22 last year. Swans have won 14 of the last 17 meetings.

Heeney is a massive out for them.

The Fritsch comment is interesting. Wasn't he on the verge of re-signing a month ago? Maybe all's not well after last week's incident.

One of the more weird Fri night games I've been to in recent times. Season running on fumes, boring game, terrible crowd (Going into the Hassett room felt like being at a VFL game and being 'allowed' to come into the box there were so few people).

Time to change the narrative.ย

Late to training because his Zoom with Horse went a little long...?

Quite right!ย  Went back and checked the article in late July:ย  "The Demons were well down the track for a contract extension for Fritsch before the COVID-19 contract freeze hit in March.ย  However with the AFL lifting that pause on new deals last week, talks for an extension for Fritsch have recommenced, with a two-year contract expected for Fritsch".

With the mooted lower sal cap one wonders if in the 'recommenced talks' our contract is as attractive as before the covid freeze. ย  Or maybe another club has entered the picture which the earlier post suggests.ย

It could be that the 16 senior players and 6 rookies OOC, we need to accommodate in the reduced sal cap or let go, is holding up announcements.

When i read those comments it shows we are still not taken seriously. Some feel confident that they can beat us and tightly so. We need to start winning these games and put them to the sword.

Only way we can change the narrative is to play finals and at least beat a big Top 5 team.

ย

I'd have thought all of the chat down Lakeside Drive these days would relate to whether South Melbourne Hellas might ever be given a licence to enter an expanded A League. It's all greek to me though.ย

No doubt this same comment has been copy and pasted many times on Demonland over the last 10 years. Good to see it coming from other supporters.

Suspect some think he's not in love with Goodwin

Dropped from the 2018 prelim

Played out of position 2019

Dropped last week

Money ??

Would hate to see him leave but could live with it if was part of the deal to get papley in - i don't think that's likely though!

I think the new rules are:

- 4 points for a regular win
- 8 points for a 'season defining' win (these can happen more than once, of course)
- 2 points for a draw
- 1 point for a loss but 'they looked bad winning against us' (and are generally unworthy filth)

you forgot the bonus point for a FTA win in prime time...

Needless to say we haven't won that extra point often

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourneย captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles atย Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckmanโ€™s masterclass in the second half.ย  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipperโ€™s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, aย career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested),ย nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.ย

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0โ€“5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
