Not for the first time in recent seasons have the Demons gone into a game against the Magpies with their hopes for the season on the line. It happened late in 2017 and Melbourne was left lamenting.

If the club want to prove it stands for something then it must win games like today with fierce attack on the ball and pressure at the contest from the start.

It's 4 premiership points. We could lose this game and go undefeated for the rest of the year, but this one feels different...

It's time for the new era to stand up, take control, and take this club foward.

The old guard is done, they've battled as hard as they could but today is the day, against the old enemy, that we must rise.

The old Melbourne would fold, fall, offer excuses, have a good team on paper but forget the game is played on the ground.

I get the feeling these guys won't let that happen, there is something in the air that's for sure.

Happy birthday young man! It was Saturday 15 August 1964 that we beat Hawthorn by 4 points (on a very muddy Glenferrie Oval) and then went on to win our last Premiership! Let’s hope that the ‘big scary man’ can help us get the four points today and history can repeat itself for you and your kids! ?

Genuinely pumped for today’s game, and get to head along as an added bonus.

Preussy’s big chance today. As far as his career goes, a performance against Grundy could put him in the shop window.

That’s an average Collingwood team without Treloar, De Geoy, Howe, Roughead.
especially with Pendlebury and Grundy being sore or underdone.

whoever gets Dunn needs to give him a bath. Although if it’s T Mac it will like a Dinosaur versus a Robot! Who wins? ?

In 1964 a hawthorn player would come to my Eastern suburbs school and try and give away free tickets to the game on Saturday.  Rarely did any kids take them. We were all Dees, Pies or Bombers we the Dees being the Kings. If I had taken those free tickets I would have witnessed a dozen Hawks flags, but stuff it I am a Dees man.  Important game today.

The old Melbourne in me knows that every time I say “we need to win this” “this is a huge game and will set us up nicely” they let me down.

I’m hoping they finally prove my doubts wrong.
I for one would have liked Hannan kept in as I think he took some strong marks around the 50m arc and it provided time for our forwards to set up instead of being rushed and out of place.

come on dees!

With so many games just rolling into each other each day it’s hard to keep up. I’ve not really looked at the ladder all season and haven been pretty blasé about this game.... until the bloody game day thread pops up!!! As Josh said, we’ve had plenty of these “must win/8 point games” today is the day.

Looks like a very solid goal to goal line of May, Lever, TMac and Weed. An A grade midfield and good small/medium forwards. As long as Preuss can limit Reg Grundy we should win.

Please Mr Vanders, no stupid 50s, undisciplined free kicks or turnovers. Same to you James Harmes. No excuses.

If Pruess can lean on, body on and generally molest Grundy (not in a Richmond way) in order to nullify him and wear him out, then that will be a good job. If he can also take a couple of grabs around the ground - bloody good job.

Pendles is a handy in but is he 100% ? In any case our midfield is hot atm and will give the filth plenty to worry about in itself.

Once again, clean and considered entry to our forwards will be key.  Hopefully Spargo will play have a repeat role in that. That, along with Tmac raising a gallop and finding some form would seal the deal.

My great hope would be that the  " grandson of a Collingwood legend" kicks a big bag and makes Eddie weep.

Dees by 21 and a dirty deeds celebration at The Manor post match.

As long as we're close enough at three quarter time hopefully we can run over the top of them.

I think we're going to lose comfortably. I haven't seen any evidence that we've gotten rid of our soft underbelly that played embarassing footy against port.

Big one today! I’ll be heading off to the Gabba and cheering loud. Hope big Preussy competes well.

Big one today from our midfield group, need to get on top around the ball.

Go hard Dees.

I want to be optimistic but I have read this script too many times before. Need to stay in the game for 3Q and blow them away in the 4th.

Right decision to unleash Preuss, this is exactly why we have him as insurance. At worst he will make a banged up Grundy even more battered and soften him for periods TMac needs to go in against he or Cameron. I would have played Rivers ahead of Jones or AVB as surely a fumbly Harmes comes out of the backline and locks in on Sidebottom. Keen to see how we use Viney to allow Brayshaw’s continued momentum and hope to see Weid continue his promising form. Amazed that they dropped Stephenson who we generally struggle for a match up on.

I’ve still got PTSD from 2017 that’s the sickest I’ve felt after a game of footy in recent years....especially considering what happened the next day. We still haven’t taken revenge on the filth either please let today be the day!

I’m with ya, that and the prelim the following year were the 2 most disappointing footy games I have been too.
Onwards and upwards today, I have a good feeling today that the boys will be ready to go.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
