I think JT has a dozen names already listed for his pick 18,19 options (end up pick 22/23) and who might even be left at 28 (#34/35).

Finlay Macrae**

Archie Perkins **

Jack Carroll**

Nik Cox **

Brayden Cook

Bailey Laurie

Caleb Poulter

Eddie Ford

Isaiah Winder

Nick Stevens

Zavier Maher

and perhaps a possible bid at Brandon Walker.

(** I think these will all go prior to our pick but who knows on draft day )

What do you think of Jake Bowey? Looked good to me in that that futures game.  On the small side at 175cm but plays wing and has some real zip and looks a really good kick. Exactly what we need.

Knightmare on bigfooty was asked about who might be the best fits for the dees at 18,19 and 28.  He responded with:

Interesting... can’t see it with Berry being inside mid, but if we do keep both picks and 28 he def is talented enough to go there. But I’d be more akin to players like Connor Donnie, Archie Perkins, Macrae (I think we may move up little further to secure him personally, unless mail Is that he will be around at 18 which is possible but with his exquisite foot skills maybe not) O’Driscoll is another I thinks a big chance to be in red and blue, good user and decision maker, line breaking speed AND can go inside as well as outside contest.

Others I believe in frame are Archie Perkins who’s got a massive ceiling but is raw & could go anywhere from 7-37. Carroll is def on the radar for sure, Bailey Laurie another id be keeping eye on, a Smokey for 28 I think he can potentially fall that far if we are lucky. B.Cook is another who uses ball well and could be a wing or insider, even flanker. Poulter I like a lot and can see that one being a potential pick but one I’d have ahead of him is a JT Smokey unnamed at this stage but let’s just say he’s not in top50 frame anywhere else at this stage.but he ready for it should he be selected with 28. Hopefully we get him with 50 but I’m hearing we won’t risk it.

Zac Dumesny is also rated v highly by JT’s team , another one he’s said to taken a real shine to is Tariek Newchurch, whom oozes X factor dare dash and can play midfield minutes which is the dimension I think appeals, in similar vein to why Joel Western is also in consideration, sublime skills and a fed who could become a mid so expect a bid to come for him.

Lastly, I can almost guarantee that if Henry Walsh is available with our last pick #50 (around 57-62) the Dees will jump on him. Talented Ruck (brother of Sam) who has more genuine ruck craft and tapwork than Jackson, so far more a genuine ruck where Jackson may end up more a mid-fwd, but Walsh is improving below knees & is a kid who could become a great ruck/fwd and would add some talent to our lean (bodied) ruck-stocks.

So bids on Newchurch, Western and McInnes for sure and who knows we may be able to land one of them.

Hmm, an inside mid (Berry) with our first pick? Doubtful.

Winder makes sense from the descriptions I’ve read at our next pick.

Wouldn’t have thought we would be going for a tall forward (Allison) with pick 28 either.

This is excellent viewing guys, like the selections but still can’t see Berry being our pick with 18. Maybe 19/28 for sure but I think there are 1-2 ahead of him but he def has loads of talent and uses the ball in manner none of our current mids can (apart form Gus and Trac at times).

I really like Archie Perkins after watching him live last year. He's got x-factor and could be a damaging fwd-mid type. Reckon he's got star potential and will likely go between picks 6-13.
Macrae looks to be a good accumulator with great footskills. He'd help balance our midfield.
Cook looks to be a dashing runner who hits the scoreboard. He'd slot in on the other wing or play half forward.

I think those 3 are the best options for our list, but I expect all 3 to be gone a few picks before ours. I'm hoping we trade further up the draft board to land one of them.

I like reading Knightmare's stuff but he leaves me scratching my head sometimes

Agree. Has no idea about the clubs list management.  We don’t need Berry (inside mid) or Allison.

But he lives in reality and I agree that Perkins, Macrae and Carroll will unfortunately be likely to be gone before our picks.

He has put up my draft prediction of MFC grabbing Isiah Winder, but we were trying to keep him under wraps ?. Does he read Demonland?

Based on his predictions of these already gone before our picks, we would go for Isiah Winder, Eddie Ford, or Zavier Maher. That would be a handy trio.

Yeah can’t see Berry or Allison being selected but it’s still a great mock draft in terms of info and listing top talent.

The Berry appeal is his disposal and would give a POD to current mid group in year or 2.

Jordon and Sparrow still doing though though and they both look good to me so I think an electric tall mid-wing-fwd will be what we target but who knows.. ie if a kid like Zach Reid or Chapman are available at 18/19 it won’t matter who we have already we will take them.

Cook is far more likely than Berry if available if not We have plenty of great options and there is no doubt in this crop a few Can Brice Nat Fyfe James Hird hidden gems about.. so glad we traded into this draft it could be a real winner if we get some luck!!!

NOTE: After missing on Georgiadis I wouldn’t at ALL be surprised if Kaine Baldwin comes into calculations.. His talent is immense and the risk/reward might just be worth it with pick 19/28 which is really 24/36ish)

Was junior footy played in those states this season?

WA had close to a full junior season.  11 game season as opposed to the usual 15 + finals. 10 games H & A with top 2 playing the GF.

There was 8 game WAFL Colts + finals.

WAFL Development Squads had their trials for u/14 & 15s squads across the 9 WAFL clubs with final squads selected.  Each WAFL development squad played 2 matches against other WAFL development squads in their relevant year group

Thanks  for the info.  Makes sense there would be a lot of SA and WA kids in the draft then.  VIC kids missed a whole year of development.

Zavier Maher sounds like the type of player we need, explosive and lowers his eyes and hits targets inside 50m.

I've had a bit to do with Zav through the bushies.

The kid can certainly play, and has enormous upside. Can see him late 1st early 2nd round.

Yep made comment on another thread (can't recall which one it was) but saw a very special IMO future talent in the Subiaco 14s Malachy Champion, who I think is one to look out for in 2023 draft

Yes it’s a tough. If he was 182cms, he’d be top 30. I think he will make the grade and get drafted but I’m not sure it’s by the Dees.

I really want us to get Carroll as it will allow Salem to push up to a wing

The idea that Salem can be released to the wing is a fallacy in my opinion.

The wing position has been our biggest whole for 2 years. In 2019 we had no one who could adequately fill the role on either side of the ground. We subsequently recruited both Langdon and Tomlinson to fill these roles.

Langdon has been a god send, but Tomlinson was found a bit lacking and we plugged the hole with Vanders for most of the year. As well as vanders did in playing out of position, I think we can mostly agree that its still our greatest weakness.

If Salem could play the role he would have been doing so consistently a long time ago. He simply doesn't have the tank to be effective as a midfielder.

In saying all of that. I would love to pick up another youngster who can start at hbf and develop into a winger.

Agree 100%.  Don't people remember Salem was meant to be moving to the wing in early 2019 and it didn't work.  Admittedly half the team was underdone at the start of 2019 but he didn't look like he belonged there - i think it might be due to his tank as you suggest.  I think there's more chance of him succeeding as a half forward than a winger.

I'm hoping we can find a draftee or 2 who has the tools to make this position their own - let them fight it out with Baker / Hunt for 2021.

Some have suggested Rivers might be able to play this role.  Did he play any junior footy there?

I remember him training with the mids in the preseason a few years ago, but he only played a few games until he was moved to the half back flank where he seemed to fit.

From what I recall, he played as an inside mid. I know he attended the centre bounce regularly for 2 games and while he didn't have much of an impact, neither did his opponent.

Rivers was a great hbf as a junior and should get more games this year in that position! Hoping he can develop into a wing too. Love this kid. A real find.

Agree. Dean's have the fitness base. But, Yze has already flagged that mix of Salem, Rivers, Sparrow, Kos, Harmes, Spargo, Baker & Jackson will play midfield mix roles if they can get their burst fitness to where it needs to be. So if Chrisrian can get mid-time but pure outside not inside or centre bounce likesbeen tried prev and does what's needed he def could have impact especially i50 delivery & composite. The club genuinely feels we have betteroptions than Phillips/Polec and that's largely.based on Yze and his views based on ext opinion and reviewing of players done via research so far.

Statistically Salem was actually second in distance covered per game for us this year, his tank is something he has been working on and I think with a full pre season under his belt with Burgo I think he could become an effective winger. Its also to do with Salem's 'chip kick' sort of style of kicking, his kicking isn't line breaking which is what you want in a half back flanker but his kicking is good at hitting forwards inside 50 as his chip kicks make are easy to mark for the forwards, which is what you want in a winger. I'm also happy to draft a winger like Cook but personally I think Salem's playing style is more suited to a wing and would compliment Langdon really well.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I think Salem has the tools required.  But in 2019 when we are crying out for 2 wingers and the coaches refuse to play Salem in those roles, you have to figure they have made a decision for whatever reason that he isn't suited.

I would be shocked if that reason was that we have no half back flankers to play Salems role.

Even as typing this I realise how often Goodwin has done this though!

Isaiah Winder. He’s one I’d really like to see in Demons colours in 2020. I’m thinking he is one that alongside Pickett would be very very dangerous across our forward line.  He’s a classy midfielder who across half forward would be Tim Kelly like.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
