Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

For anyone who might know,

Jackson’s ability to take a pack mark, and his set shots on goal (accuracy and range). The answer to those two questions would go a long way to the decision being a yes or a no. A lot of people throwing around “upside” and “potential”, we’re still waiting for Petracca to live up to his.

Lucky he is only 5 years and 85 games into his career, so he still has time to get better.

Apparently all at local Colts level BA....no footage from those games so far.

There's nothing in any of the draft matches that i watched.  Very solid ruckwork, distribution, getting into a freed up posi very quickly after the ruck contest to create a 4th mid option with some clearances and around the ground intercepts.  Definitely worth a top 10 pick for a team in need of a potential very good to A grade ruckman with extras.

If Grundy was in this draft, do you think he'd be worth pick 3 or 4?

At the moment it's all speculation Red, we may pick Young or even Kemp, who knows. We are trying to maximise our draft position and if that includes putting the wind up Freo, then why not. We may force them to swap what they don't want to, to get all three of their choices, on the other hand we may really want Jackson, I think we do but what would I know.

All we know at the moment is who some journalists think we should pick and in what order.

Agree. I was just saying that where a player comes from is considered by the club.

Yeah all made by couch amateurs. You gotta trust the experts you pay to do the job. Taylor said there was a 2 day conference to work through the candidates and Goodwin was involved so there are plenty of checks and balances. If Taylor and co think it's Jackson then the club needs to back their judgement.

And there is the answer.

We can all have our opinions and good on everyone who has contributed to the draft discussions, but in the end the professionals will do the job, let’s hope they get it right.

This draft is giving me a headache.

He definitely has some good attributes and has a bit of X factor about him, but  I wouldn’t personally take him unless there is a proven history of pack marking and ability to kick goals (accuracy and range). If he doesn’t have those skills now I would look to those that have other ready made skills that we need, kicking and speed.

On top of Jackson being a bolter, Taylor has a poor record with drafting talls. He’s good at identifying mid sized players, but has been poor with talls and smalls. Here’s his track record for talls since he started with the 2014 draft.

O McDonald

Weiderman

Hulett (Delisted)

King (Delisted)

Filopovic (Delisted)

T Smith (Delisted)

Keilty (Delisted)

Petty

In fairness all these blokes were picked at 40 plus or on a rookie contract, so this list means absolutely nothing.

I wonder if all the media noise about us taking Jackson is intended to try and get Freo and/or GWS to offer us a better pick swap for #3.

Occam's Razor says we want him at 3. Taylor explicitly said we don't play games in the draft - although he was referring to a bid on Green, I think you can generalise the concept.

Taylor was referring to the selection of players in the draft and that we wanted to just take the player we felt was the best. But I think they aren’t doing their jobs properly if they don’t look to bluff in the lead up to the draft in a bid to maximise our draft hand. The academy systems are a rort that works against us and playing games like this is our only defence.

Yes we do, ultimately we don’t have a choice, just opinions.

True. It's when those opinions are put forward as categorical facts that it becomes tedious. We're all having a crack at picking the players we'd like to see and that's great but the reality is, none of us know whether Jackson will be boom or bust, or whether Young's foot skills will translate at AFL level. A little humility goes a long way.

Just watched a segment on 7 news Perf. Nic Nat doing a driving interview with Jackson.
Ch7 essentially pumping him up as the next Nic Nat the way he plays.
Jackson said Melbourne, Freo, Giants and Crows are the most keen.
Coulda played NBA his basketball talent is so good.
Nic Nat said Melbourne told him they would draft him. Had his bag packed ready to go and was shocked when they read out Jacky boys name.

I was initially against the idea of Jackson at 3, however it does make a lot of sense.

He will fit our list needs perfectly by starting his career as a forward, lessening the workload of t-mac and weid, and giving Max a chop out in the ruck. In 5-6years when Maxy is slowing down and nearing the end he'll be primed to take on full ruck duties.  The only query I have on him is his ability in the forward half due to his limited exposure there, but I'll trust the recruiters to make the correct call on that. Quality big men are much harder to find and with pick 8 we should still land a quality mid/back-flanker.

I’ll preface this by saying I’ve seen nothing more than one highlights package.

However, what he seems to possess is pace and great ability to repeat effort after a ruck contest. If, as a forward, he can bring it to ground and then add a second or third contest it would already make our forward line more potent. Effectively a very tall small forward.

That being said, I wouldn’t be spending pick 3 on that alone...

Geez the Gawn/Jackson team up prospect is an exciting prospect. for me it's his forward prospects that is key to this. if Taylor thinks he can be a 40 -50 goal a year key forward, i say draft him at pick 3. and look at Ash or Serong at 8

Too much logic, unable to compute.

I don't buy that he'll be that kind of forward and not for years anyway. I can't find TAC stats for Tom McDonald but I feel like most forwards who kick that many goals have also dominated at junior level. Jackson clearly hasn't played a lot forward so there's an unknown factor but you want to kick more than the occasional goal if you're to become a star goal kicker.

Jackson should have the fitness, agility and speed to contribute as a forward, that's far different to actually being a regular goal kicker. The absolute ceiling of his forward play might be someone like Josh Jenkins and that's when he's 24 not 18.

Being a useful contributor up forward whilst he matures is the aim but drafting him will be based around him being a 20+ touch extra midfielder who can dominate at clearances and link up around the ground.

Gawn works his absolute backside off to stay involved in stoppages and useful at ground level because at his height and mobility it's really hard. In basketball terms Gawn is like a traditional centre trying to chase around all the superstar smaller players. In recent years basketball teams are realising the value of a skilled centre who can shoot, pass and switch to defend guards. That's where Jackson comes in, he's got a midfielders mindset in a rucks body.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
