I agree with selection, need to know who isn't AFL standard. We can't go higher or lower on the ladder. Give a few lads a game in the AFL before you show them the door.

I'll be there watching them play tonight and signing up again for the next year. And if they dish up the same crap again next year as they did this year, I will lay the boots into them again. Always Melbourne no matter how [censored] they are.

Happy bunch in here then? No point sooking about the named team, it's not like we are fighting for a finals spot.

I would be absolutely amazed if Preuss isnt a late in and plays as the fulcrum of a one tall - five small forward swapping with Maxy.and that one of mid forwards is a late out

Hysteria. ..over what.

This is a nothing game

Its about a nothing  club run buy a nothing mob that seems to know nothing about football  ...despite inventing it !!

No one's  hysterical.  Pretty much no one gives a [censored]. I dont. This season was over halfway through  game 1.

The only thing  remotely  akin to hysterical is the idea there's much reason or rhyme  about anything  we  (mfc) do as being organised.

At the moment some still talk interestingly of demon football minutae as though we actually  can impact.

Im sure some would post a thrwad about the changing list of lifeboat  captains for the Titanic.

Im sure the usual suspects  will feign outrage.

This game. ..the next are irrelevant.  It's  marking time. Ask a professional  theyd agree if reluctantly.

This takes something away from Chandlers debut i dont mean to dismiss that. Good luck lad.

We're  17th. Thats a remarkable achievement. ....maybe not.

Why this FD hasn't  been summarily  dismissed  is anyones  guess.

Those that feel offended..oh well

This week reinvents the Kruezer cup...havent we come a long way.

As I posted, Hysteria, I haven't come across so much since I left primary school

Sneaky chance that Hore may have a stint forward. Don't lock it in, but he was doing a fair bit of goal kicking at the captain's run.

You know we’re not playing finals when all our favourites such as ANB, JFK, Stretch, Spargo and a Wagner brother are all playing in round 22.

It's a bit like when Sheedy finally managed to finagle all four Daniher brothers into the one team. (In reverse)

It's like when all the planets line up. This is the dawning of the age of A-god-help-us

A sure sign that this is where we've hit bottom and it's all up from here. That, or a giant comet will strike the earth during the match.

Ffs. Spargo couldn’t get a kick at a donkey farm.  Really.  Chandler averages 6 kicks and 0.5 goals a game at VFL Level.  I had both as DELISTED at year end.  Worst side since 2014.

Sydney May be bad but we have put up the WHITE FLAG. DISGRACEFUL.

I will watch on TV but NOT GOING TO THE GAME.

With Preuss and Keilty as emergencies, it would not surprise me in the least to see one of them come in for [take your pick of a small forward]. Perhaps they're waiting to see if it's going to be wet (play Keilty) or dry (play Preuss). The alternative suggested earlier in this thread that Hore plays forward is another option, although my gut tells me that Frost might be the surprise forward and occasional second ruck.

That team is a [censored] disgrace and it is an embarrassment to everyone connected with the club that they have let it get to this point. Woeful drafting and list management, terrible injury management and pathetic selection have combined into one total [censored] storm.

If you lose players you bring in the next in line for the position, you don't just throw everything up in the air and say let's not play a forward line this week. If it is good enough for Clarkson to say "you lose a soldier, you replace him with another one", then it is certainly good enough for me. Preuss and Keilty may not be great footballers, but they'll generally give a contest and they are certainly both better value than Spargo and Chandler ever will be at this level.

Let's play Goody's Selection Bingo:

  • players selected with injury / fitness issues - Melksham at the very least
  • players selected with no VFL form - Spargo & Chandler
  • ignore the players who performed well in the VFL last week - Keilty, Wagner & Preuss named in best players
  • Goody's favourites in for no apparent reason - Neal-Bullen
  • no key forwards - its not as though there aren't any options at Casey
  • no ruck support (yes Sydney don't have a ruckman, but why not capitalise on a clear advantage?)

And, if somehow we manage to beat Sydney, that's not due to great coaching or selection. It's an indication that they want to win even less than we do.

you make it sound like we have Buddy sitting in the twos.  the highlighted players you mention have been given several opportunities in the team and have not performed.  there is no reason to think they would be better than the other NQRs selected

That's why we brought Spargo in, siss. By the way he plays, he obviously believes he's a KPF.

Worked a treat out of the goal square against Davis for a while against the Giants earlier in the year so why wouldn't he!!??

Goody's pretty much tried every person in every position...why not try it a 2nd time!  They wont be expecting this one...

Interesting that Lockhart wasn't preferred over one of those - would perhaps suggest that he has hit a wall fitness-wise, understandable given his late entry into the AFL and lack of a pre-season.

Either that or it's last-chance-saloon time for some of the above.

Bing. I think you are spot on. My view also that those players are playing for their careers tonight.

So if they play ok against another team that tis going through the paces, that means they trigger an extension?

Please.  They aren't picking these players at the view they are playing for their careers.  They have been picked because of a combination of us having minimal to pick from, and that we just don't want to win.

There's absolutely no way we will win this game tonight.

Obviously we can all try and be wise before (and after) the event, but given Sydney's lengthy list of injured talls, the fact that we have chosen to match them and go so small could be pure Goody wisdom. It is a night game and sure to be greasy conditions after all.

Or maybe the AFL promotion department asked if we could help them market the game as the battle of the minnows to the tune of 'It's a small world after all'.

On a serious note I think this may be our smallest side ever - Viney, Jones, JKH, Stretch, C.Wags, Salem, ANB, Spargo and now Chandler - that's a club record nine sub-6 footers.

Three talls out actually, May, OMac, Petty and none in, oh well not to worry.

Maybe Hore goes forward ( he did a lot of goal kicking at training today) but who helps out Max? Given up trying to read the logic in the selections this year.

Swans don't have a real ruckman at all

Yes I don't expect a lot of marking tonight.

I do expect a strong attempt to play on at all costs with a lot of handball overlap.

Oscar McDonald dropped without Steven May replacing him @binman.

Don't remember him being 'injured' last week either.

You'd be seriously out of pocket if a gambling man took that bet.

You might want to do some research before you sledge STMJ.

Omac is out injured (ankle)

By the by i'm not sure what bet you were referring to. I posted prior to the game that i thought he would be dropped last week for May.

You know guys, I always start the season with a good dose of optimism. This year more than usual.

However, the tank has been well and truly drained, and at the moment I am but a dry and extremely Bitter husk.

I think I shall give the maid a jolly good flogging

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
