On so many levels, especially at the grass roots.

I just shook my head when i read that. surely he knows it's not his place to get involved. but then, he's treated the competition like his play thing since day one.

i really hope Coniglio goes now just to spite him.

Mesage to Gil on behalf of Coniglio

Just stfu Gildo !!

remember when wayne jackson, as ceo of the afl, sang along with gusto in the freo team huddle after one of their victories?

this is same thing - gil's barracking moment for his pet project

i certainly don't remember anyone urging any of our wantaway players when we were deplorable to 'stick fat with the dees'

In my opinion an example of the dreadful double standard of the AFL. They talk down long established clubs that are struggling whilst propping up the clubs they "need" to succeed. GWS (like the Gold Coast) have no natural fan base and are struggling in the West here. The average home crowd is reported as 12000 per match and has been declining in the last two years despite the wealth of talent that has gifted to them.

Do you reckon Gil would give GWS a priority pick if Coniglio leaves?

I find it extraordinary that McLachlan is encouraging a specific player to play with a specific club. That's a completely improper statement for the person who is meant to be in charge of the competition. If he truly believes that a player shouldn't leave, why does he oversee a system which allows trading, free agency and a system of employment by contract?

I've been concerned for some time that McLachlan is not an appropriate CEO. This statement, while perhaps not quite confirming my opinion, certainly strengthens it.

I thought I recalled him having a Freo scarf on but I can't find any evidence of that. In any event it was an absolute disgrace for a sitting CEO to be barracking a win of a club.

I heard him on 3aw last night. Caro went after him on gambling sponsorship. The AFL deal with betting is up this year. He used the if we don't take the money it will be lost to the AFL community. He would be using the same argument if cigarette advertising was still around. The AFL are all about the money it is first, last and in the middle. On top of that he is a poor communicator. She also tackled him about his time off to go to Hawaii earlier in the year. He just avoided the question.

We need a new CEO who is not from the old boys club. Won't happen of course.

Grass roots footy, gambling everywhere you look, umpires department directionless, pointless & misguided rules changes. Cheaper pies and chips but! Well done Gil.

Absolutely calling the shots in areas of no concern to his position with the AFL. Not even down the line should a transfer emanate. Must resign or be removed for examples of his leadership flaws across the tenure.

Elegantly - and appropriately - posited, beelzebub.

Easy, Mao is the most ethical, also he actually had vision.

Edit: What would happen if Cognilio said, I would prefer that the AFL was led by a CEO that was good at their job and stuck to it?

Very tight-lipped when Scully, Frawley, Rivers, Howe, Moloney, Sylvia and Hogan left...

Wow.

There are some people who really just believe the world ought to be arranged to suit them.

I really hate the smug expression 'check your privilege', but geezus, there's a man who needs to check his privilege.

This is even more inappropriate than the dancing in the Freo changerooms moment, that was at least just a tasteless celebration of a 'good commercial outcome'. Gil is actually putting pressure on a player regarding a significant personal decision.

Gil is big end of town and the Sydney market is big end of town in keeping the ratings etc. His comments re Cognilio were bordering on cheating, certainly were barracking.

Footy is a billion dollar industry. Is it any surprise that its management has fallen upon businessman concerned mostly with a bottom line?

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • POSTGAME: Geelong

The Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, falling to 0–4 after a more spirited showing against the Cats at Kardinia Park. Despite the improved effort, they went down by 39 points, and the road ahead is looking increasingly grim.
