Petracca training incident

Featured Replies

What the actual [censored]!??

How about focusing on getting their skills right on an oval instead of drowning each other in a pool!

Thats gotta be the dumbest exercise Ive ever heard of.  Holy [censored].

Was our brilliant head of fitness behind it?

Well the way our year is going I’m surprised he didn’t drown

Christian Petracca helped from swimming pool after struggling to resurface

How bizarre can a training session be, reaching dangerously - whether 'supervised' or not - into the training regimens of footballers for the elusive 'fixes' administered by cranks? It is as bad as drug performance enhancement and for the uninitiated, irresponsible. Whatever was wrong with the aerobic and anaerobic methods tried and tested for the past forty years to raise O2  capacity and lactic acid tolerances?

'Oh,' said the FD, 'let's do something different with this pariah of methodology as it sounds groundbreaking. We are only playing with their wellbeing.'

Sort of [censored] that military uses and in short bursts like a football team would do would be bloody useless.

Not sure of the science behind this, but my uneducated opinion is that exercises like this and military style stuff for professional athletes are absolute rubbish.

Sounds like he may have had latent hypoxia. Being an ex-navy diver, I can tell you there’s no benefit to this sort of exercise for professional sports players. It was used more so to put trainees under stress.

I'd much prefer him learning to kick straight then all this fancy drowning in a pool [censored]

Hypoxic training is not unusual. One version of it is training at altitude.

This method though just sounds plain stupid and dangerous

Surprised Misson didn't drop a brick on his head to make sure.

This season is a tragic chain of diabolical events.

How about we learn to play a decent game plan and spend less time walking with balls underwater.

Seriously wtf!

It's like the entire club is trying to force a square plug into a round hole. Don't worry about just going from A to B, when we can visit X Y & Z along the way.

These guys do know that we're meant to be playing footy right?

Now that i think about it thought it makes sense, given that Goody's game plan is sinking (or is that sunk?).

They did it last year

I saw the training incident headline and thought oh god know he must have dropped a Big Mac. Thanks christ he only nearly drowned!

If Trac plays well this week, let’s try and drown him before every game.

I thought the MFC was already drowning.

If he wasn’t carrying so much extra weight.. he may have been able to resurface quicker!

Like ice baths and altitude training, yet another useless fad that AFL clubs have to follow.

Post of the week. :)

Being a lifelong asthmatic I can fully understand the idea behind it. Swimming was the only thing that developed my lung capacity to a point where I was able to ease off on medications.

Having said that, surely there are other, safer, ways of doing it??? Also, if this was a preseason training drill, why are we still doing it? It's game time, let's get some skills training happening and retain fitness levels, rather than pushing to improve. No wonder players look tired on game day and can't dispose properly.

Yeah, but think of the upside. When global warming really kicks in and footy is played underwater, we will be top 4 material again!

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season.
