Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The only thing to be decided on Friday night is the size of the loss. Reminds me of the Neeld days. No key forwards, poor delivery to those who are there. The key to our dreadful start in 2019. How on earth has this club failed to discuss / confront the Preliminary final  slaughter?

After Friday night we will be in another rebuild phase. My God it is boringly familiar.

To be honest i really think you learn more from your successes, rather than your mistakes. They just need to review what they were doing right, then compare it to whats what now perhaps. Thats my take anyway.

The coach has said he has not reviewed the loss with the players. So obviously they believe that nothing was wrong back then and have continued the play the same way. Four losses since then making exact same errors. God deliver us.

If you don't take the time to understand the how and why you fail, you will surely continue to do so.

Must be running out of room under that carpet.

I recall that but I got the impression the coaches reviewed it very thoroughly.

Being the last game meant there wasn't a chance to get the players together and to me it doesn't seem productive to start their preseason reviewing it. Hopefully the coaches went thru it with the leadership team.  Then hopefully the reviews generated changes to player development/training programs/drills/education and hopefully to their own game plan and strategies.

In support of your second point, in a recent interview on Fox, Roos asked Goodwin about game plan changes for the new rules.  Goodwin said something like 'not much, we will continue to play our way'.   After two games, like you, I'm beginning to think we haven't changed much for either the Prelim Final learnings nor the new rules.  Or the players have a long way to go to learn what changes have been put in place.

Certainly we are not using the new rules to our advantage.

Two things that help anything grow.

Discuss with all concerned what is going wrong and why and if required by whom.

Discuss with all concerned what is going right, and why.

Emphasize with training that which is working.

Again... important for all to know what's being done wrong

Relax ...

We've got this.

( Not sure what 'this' is ?)

Honestly believe that the MFC are currently too far out fitness-wise to impact a running Essendrug team and too slow across a game to turn outcomes around (again, at the present moment). Added to those considerations, is the shortage of key players due to injuries and recoveries from injuries, leaving us a depleted line-up for at least the next few weeks. Umpiring. This too will work against the MFC as our opponents this week are a major AFL favourite - how else could they 'get away' with their recent history? A resurgent Essendon in tight matches (even if for only on week) will have pre-ordained umpiring instructions - their fan base that attends matches is worth far more money to the AFL than that of the MFC. The only hope is that our 3rd-best team at selection will have a mind-shift to come out raging and keen to appease the season so far - yet that is somewhat unlikely. If OMac plays, we can kiss at least 6-7 goals goodbye as leakages to their forwards.

Very true, but I believe we understand at this point how we have failed and certain non-performers still get a guernsey week in, week out so the issue is still one of depth.

I'm not convinced we understand why we're losing. That is.. the club...that is. the FD.

Will be enlightening this Friday...one way or another

If there's a particular concern about this game for mine it's that whilst the Bombers are a bit all over the shop they have some pace and they WILL run both ways.

Danger game. Lose this....????

Yeah, theory do understand, but they will not be sure how much to tweak things yet,  as we have not played our best yet as individuals... let alone as a team.

But we turned a corner with individuals after Qtr time last week.  Although we were under the pump from the get go,  as we were overly manic in the first, to control the ball,,,, causing us to overuse the ball,  Via having our Mids all in too tight,  basically handing off the ball, one to another,  until we dropped it.   like seagulls in flight with a hot chip.

We got much better after Qtr time, but were playing catch-up,  and so were always under pressure.   Omc went to Hawkins, and did OK.  Frost was quite good after Qtr time.

May was underdone & I think in hindsight should not have played this game.  We could have used another smallish running player, IMO.

Gawn was beaten by Stanley,  overall.

Max has been struggling with the new ruck rules,  and this has caused confusion with our on-ballers, when he grabs the ball...  and he looks to kick it too often.   I think we will sort this out this week.   Little tweaks.

Interesting that the Dees are making the banner this week out of all the negative things supporters have said about players. Great initiative and message.

Pretty much look no further than Demonland for banner content.

I'm really starting to wonder if our brand/style/game already has had it 15 mins in the sun and is now old hat.

To even remotely work we need our very best players on the paddock and fit...it needs to be pretty dry and it needs the capacity to lock in the ball/contest.

This all seems very yesterday to me.

The rucking is now much more open and 666 all but precludes locking down that first scrum ( isn't it pretty much that )

The idea as I understand it is to simply push the ball into our 50 and relentlessly will it through the goals. There's not a lot of nuance or skill here just the idea that somehow the ball will pop out and be sent to a player within range.

That worked fine....until it didn't. And it doesn't anymore.

666 has opened up the ground ( too much for us I'd suggest ) To attempt to get the ball locked in we sacrifice manning their outside runners who once THEY get the ball can spread and deny us not only our ability to corral them...but simply we dont HAVE the ball. We no longer control the game, it's tempo or its style.

Invariably as they run and spread we aren't getting to them as that Roosy foundation of two way running seems dead and buried.

Other teams quickly create space and overlaps. All over red Rover..

Yes Essendon are ESSentially rubbish at the moment but so are we. They however can, and do spread well. They can and do run both ways ( better than us ) and they definitely have more players with pace.

I fear if they can get out of the middle 50/50 their way they'll score more often as our defense is in tatters. We still don't like to man up.

If they can deny us our contest, we'll lose.

It's all any team has to do.

Well even if we're 0-3 I'll be (mostly) full of pride at the clubs progressive stance at bringing societal issues to greater public awareness...

BB.. excellent post.. there's a thread presently on the various game plans that would benefit from your post.

The only thing I would add/query is where does the zone fit in.Last year when we were successful the zone protected the ball on the way out of our forward line and often sent it flying back in to advantage. Something has happened and our zone is now being picked to pieces.

An 80 point loss where the game plan worked (far more inside 50's) but we lost by 80 points seems to me to demonstrate a dramatic failure of the game plan rather than player's failure to execute.

How was Gawn beaten by Stanley?  Gawn had 53 hitouts to 27, and nearly doubled Stanley's AFL Fantasy points.  Disposals were 13-14 but Gawn's were all kicks. Gawn also laid 4 tackles to 0.

He wasn't at his best but that's a dominant display over an opposing ruckman.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
