If Neeld still had 'great relationships' with off field staff members and some players as he claims, those people might not be so keen on him now @Supermercado

He just went and did a big curry s*** on the carpet (judged by Beamer's and Green's reaction) when we needed to be focusing elsewhere.

On a more positive note, this will show what type of club we are today. Most of our blokes weren't around during CS's reign of terror and hopefully the blokes who are there just see it for what it is.

I don't think any of the current players, admins, coaches etc could care less about Neeld going on last night and I highly doubt it will have an effect on our preparation or mindset for Friday night.

We're a totally different beast now, one that is ready to feast on the carcass of Geelong.

It's effecting my preparation & mindset though 'Wise'...

These guys just need to zip it now, nothing to be gained except to make themselves look more stupid than they already are.

If that's possible.

Know when to fold 'em"...

I'm a bit confused by your post. I'm not sure what the Ggodwin thread has to do with it?

We were a shambles in 2011. We might have had on field highlights but off field we were divided and going backwards.  Three foot effortless was embracing a new level of professionalism and we still had blokes on Hollywood boulevard. We were being left behind in the football department arms race and wernt going to catch the pack. I don't think anyone is saying Neeld was the right solution, but they can see why it was necessary to try something. As per my post above,  he didn't have much chance with all the off field stuff going on.

A club's supporters are a part of its culture. Roos tried telling us that on more than one occasion. Abstract, but when a notion such as Goodwin can't coach and should be sacked for example picks up steam you can end up with idiotic administrative fixes like . . . Neeld. Everyone was saying we needed some tough love. So Schwab, Lyon and co. set that as a coaching parameter and selected whoever could pitch a tough act (and a rookie who could be controlled - but that's another story again).

This fantastic post from JK below provides a brief example of the prevailing supporter-base thought at the time:

Not that any of this matters now but I was a Neeld apologist at the time. I felt the club needed a cultural reset and he was doing the hard work while dealing with some very unfortunate distractions: EnergyWatch, Jurrah, Stynes death and later the tanking investigation.

I was wrong. We were a dysfunctional club from the management down. Instead of engaging, educating and protecting his players he took a divide and conquer approach, causing a litany of wrecked careers including his own. That he got another AFL gig afterwards speaks to the big fat boys club that is clubland admin.

I find it really sad, the whole thing, people who at the end of the day thought they were doing the right thing, it didn't work out, it actually went as bad as it could be, but honestly, i think its time to acknowledge the past but embrace the future., after all they didn't inject players with potentially life threatening and banned substances.

Brad Green is the key prosecution witness and appears close to forsaking the footy omerta. If we snag a flag I think he could be turned, and then the dominoes will right up the ranks to Don Schwab.

If true that's an amazing revelation. I have heard insiders speak on this issue and been told that the player assessment took place. Note that I wasnt told it was a vote for captaincy, but more of a leadership attribute assessment, in which those guys were so far above the others they had to be appointed.

I have heard Neeld defend the selection of captains, talking about the assessment, it was an in depth answer to a direct criticism, he said the coaching staff chose Grimes and Trenners from the assessment AT NO STAGE DID HE MENTION A PLAYERS VOTE.

If ex players and demon media folk really love the club they should just pipe down for a few weeks.  Give the team some clear air to do their thing.

The Ox and "Marco" on Macquarie sports radio said that plenty of ex-Demons from the Neeld era have called them to back Green and Moloney. Among the off-the-record comments: within 3 weeks people could see it was a calamitous appointment ... it was hands down the darkest time ever ... destroyed careers ... (not news to we the faithful, but maybe to some outsiders, esp in other codes).

But every one (including Green and Moloney) refused to go on air to talk as they say they don't want to disrupt the finals campaign.

I put the Neeld era in with the Bailey era along with the era from the late 60's through to 1980 as largely forgettable.  There are no real fond memories apart from the individual brilliance of a number of players.

The Barassi era through to the end of Daniher's time gave us real hope for the team even though we only seriously challenged a few times.  RDB coached us well but we were bereft of talent and then Northey,  Balme & Danners all took the team to the finals.

Full circle to Roos and now Goodwin and we're back to a point where we can challenge again.  So there's no point looking back unless you want to learn from the past (on how not to do it)

Last night's interview serves as a reminder of how to go about things the wrong way.  No one individual is at fault either - collectively we can fail or prosper.  You've just got to choose the right path (as a club)

We're now on the right path so away we go.

I remember (painfully) when the cameras went into a pre game speech by Nield.  It was dreadful.  So uninspiring.  Was not a coaches arch ole.  He can say what he thinks, and Beamer and others can shoot back.  These were all dark days indeed.  I, for one, am happy to leave all of this under the rug until we win a flag.  Historians can then open up this can of Shyte and wallow away.

Until then, listening to this toxic toad and others who want to rewrite history and claim a hand in the success of today is not on my agenda, and they can all go and suck the big ones.

Malthouse was glowing in his assessment of Neelds talent to Lyon and co. because he was busy trying to burn down his own club after being shafted by Eddie for Buckley.

Why,,, Why is FOX showing this episode of the show THIS WEEK ???    of all weeks.

Surely they would do the decent thing at FOX... and keep it in the Can... until later in the season?

Whats up FOX ???

Granted but that same 8.5 win team lost by 186 points. and could barely get within 10 goals of any team above 10th on the ladder. He was a [censored] coach. No one doubted that.

He also inherited a bunch of non-professionals who would joke around at training and throw up on each other on trips.

This was a guy that had come from a Premiership winning Pies team, that had also played in a GF the year before and won 23 of 25 matches. He mentioned when he first arrived how had the training habits and approach to game day conditioning was. I think he saw a team that was so far off the line that he saw no option but to go to an absolute extreme. It may not have been the right decision, but he essentially went from driving a Ferrari to driving a Datsun.

Not trying to defend his mistakes, and it may not have gotten as bad had he never have come on, but all I'm saying is that it had already gone to [censored].

Please retract the Datsun comment . . . most offended. I owned a Stanza and it was fab. And 180Bs are one of the most sought after rally cars in the world. ?

A favourite of mine.  Presser following round 2, 2013.

Although, it would be remiss of me not to mention one shouldn't show this to anyone contemplating self harm.  You may not see them again.

I have just watched this ‘episode’ of Open Mike. Firstly, I am ok.

I think we need to get down to the nitty gritty of all this and strip back some of the bull [censored]. This man said that on taking the job he was told a lot of older players would be moved on and essentially cited Schwab for this (vaguely), I’m staggered that the CEO had so much input into the list management and find it very weird that the coach had so little say in who he wanted moving forward. I’m also a bit surprised every time someone mentioned that our list needed a complete overhaul on the back of a season where some tipped us to play finals. Lastly on that point I can’t belie e there are people here falling for this and think people like Lyon we’re behind this orchestrated plan with the list. When asked if Lyon got Neeld the job he had no idea about any of that so I’m pretty satisfied he didn’t know anything about Lyon’s input. It’s time to stop blaming Lyon for the downfall of our club during that period when in reality his contribution ended when the coach was hired look to the people who oversaw that period.

His Essendon time sounds like a total joke.  I’m sure the guy is a nice man but he couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag. That men behind the ball nonsense I remember hearing after one of the thrashings in Adelaide. It stank then and it stinks now.

To sum up - nothing was his fault and to echo Steve above, rambling rubbish.

My favourite part was when he got kicked out of a Yoga retreat in Ko Samui the day after being sacked as Melbourne coach.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
