Always been a Pedo fan, but looks off the pace. Worried it might be the end of him at AFL level

    Is there training on today?   We need Melk and Hibberd to be confirmed starters..  even with Hogan out,  those two guys coming back will strengthen the team.

    All the talk has been about our tall forwards. To me the biggest problem has been our smalls - Spargo is not ready and Jeff goes missing far too often. Kent must come in along with Melksham and maybe Hannan.

    Geelong definitely rubbing their hands with glee and eyeing off Melbourne's spot in the eight.

    Melbourne can put Geelong to bed by simply beating the Eagles . Not a big deal.  They remind me of the Crows last year.  Overrated .

    Pick a side of 22 fit and hungry players and threaten to chop  the rest.

    Maybe Jones has to be dropped .............................never happen. Thats why Melbourne is where it always is.

    We need to get the small forward mix right. The smaller forward lines are the ones that have provided the most headaches for the Eagles this year.

    If he keeps his spot, we need Jeffy to stand up in this game.

    You may well be right,   Its blasphemy I know, but.........I used to think the same about Neita's  last 30 odd games ....didn't happen

    Pick a side of fit and hungry players look to these finals not the ones we might never make anyway, no experiments or gifting of games to get experience. Win the bloody game !!

    While I wouldn’t drop Jones , would have spent two hours in video room with him showing his effort against Swans. He seemed to be jogging slowly in no mans land for at least half the game quarters 2&3 when we got belted, and had a bit of a crack in the last!

    Disappointed with Pedo AFL games this year, tempted to bring in Weideman. Last chance for Pedo!

    I'd complain a fair bit about him as a teen when he couldnt take marks, but my dad would often correct me by telling me that he was there primarily to crash packs and bring it to ground.

    I know 4 changes would be too many but I agree with the above and would add Bugg for Garlett. I want players that are playing for their careers and will fight to the death. Garlett has been next to useless and puts no physical pressure on. His kicking for goal is no worse than Buggs IMO.

    ANB is just lucky there will be too many changes but he is next on my list after his appalling game on the weekend.

    Not a Kent fan but when he came back last time his physical pressure was good. Its also his hometown/WA crowd and he will want to do very well there - if for no other reason than he may request a trade there next year!

    I did post several times when people were calling for Garletts inclusion that he really had only played 1 good game in almost 12 months. You reap what you sew. Would've given Bugg another try, you at least know he's having a crack.

    Popped in at training for just over an hour and nice to see Joel Smith back training - albeit just with Crossy. Saw his scar and the medicos appear to have done a great job. He is setting himself for a return next week v GWS and imagine he will be sporting more padding than his dad used to don. Hope he doesn't rush back - he's way too important if we make finals.

    Jetta also was initially in rehab group but after about 45mins joined the main group, so he'll be right to play.

    Baker the only other rehab player and he was just doing laps - he reckons the VFL prelim is his target.

    Melky and Hibberd both looked fit and eager. Unless they hurt themselves in final bit of training they will be playing.

    Pedo training with backs, Weid training with forwards.

    As to side, I will be surprised if there is not four changes.

    Obviously, Hunt and Hogan are out and Spargo needs to reboot in VFL, while the experiment with Pedo as intercepter did not work and Hibbo will be back to play that role this week and with the Eagles down to two tall forwards - Vardy and Darling - it's hard to justify having three tall backs.

    That means it's a question of whether Pedo replaces Hoges as our second tall forward, or whether Weid gets the job. I'm loving all the rhetoric on other threads, but as I've said before, Weid now has the agility to play AFL, he just needs the confidence and the rule changes next year will help him. Ultimately he has to play because why spend the whole week training Pedo as a backman if you want him to play as a forward.

    So Melky in for Spargo, Weid in for Hoges, Hibberd in for Pedo and Fritsch sent to defensive rotations for Hunt, leaving one more spot to be filled by either Kent, Hannan or Bugg.     Didn't realise that Smith might be ready for GWS, but that's great news. I agree, prefer not to risk him, though.

    Agree with the proposed changes. The Kent/Hannan/Bugg is the most interesting discussion to me (I'm in the let's give Weids a chance camp, because we have to look to the future and develop talent). Kent and Hannan have both impressed to different degrees (Hannan more, in my opinion), and Bugg a little less so. I just want whoever is hungrier, will lay those forward 50 tackles and bleed for goals. I want to see maximum pressure to prevent the ball from leaving our 50 (unless it leaves for a centre bounce post-goal!!). We need to see

    We need a hungry, desperate goal sneak - and this is the perfect opportunity to develop one!! Who's hungrier? Who will take the chance??

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
