Poll: Who is the bigger loss?

Who is the bigger loss for us? Viney or McDonald? Of course they are both huge losses to the side and arguments can be made for both of them being a bigger loss to the team. Who do you rate as the bigger loss for the next 6 to 8 weeks and why?

Both huge, but Tmac for mine, as with Salem, Petracca, ANB, etc all capable in the middle in addition to Oliver, Jones Tyson, etc. we should be able to cover for Jack Viney. Covering for a capable key forward who can pitch hit in ruck is just Pedo, whose form can vary.

Really tough call but, for mine, it's T Mac.  As Paul says above I think we can cover for Viney a little easier.  The one-two punch of Hogan and McDonald had the potential to be a match winner, and while I have faith in Pedersen to fill the gaps, it still feels a step down regardless.

It's more than his (TMac) forward presence that we'll miss. We lose the ability to put him down back ×to cover someone if need be. I love Pedo and am happy he gets the opportunity (because he earned it last year) but he can't really swing to defense in a pinch.

It's a fair question SWYL, as we know he had some discomfort before the series and we are led to believe, by one poster in particular, that if there is even a slight niggle then they end up in the rehab group at training.  

It seems like a strange turn of events.  We're in this position now though, so hopefully 6-8 means 6-8 in this case.

I voted TMac and only gave consideration to Sunday’s game. Although they may cut a tall when the final teams are named, Geelong have named a very tall forward line which may expose our lack of height down back. I think TMac would have been a very handy addition whom we could have moved down back if needed. 

If Dangerflog was playing I would have voted Viney. It was a close call for me.

Viney is the most important player on the list.  You only needed to watch that first Quarter against Port Adelaide last year, where we'd missed him for a few weeks before hand, to see how much taller everyone else walks with Viney there.  He's our Joel Selwood.

There is not much between Pedersen and Tom McDonald, and the two sides to win the flags over the last couple of years have both had smaller, more agile forward lines as it leads to more forward pressure.

Good points. He’s been injured for a while now and not at his best. I think we forget just how good he can be. In 2016 I remember thinking he’ll win a Brownlow one year.

It is such bad management. Both players should have been in the Moon boot, to minimize loadings

But no, we at Melbourne play to win a flag in March

I reckon Jack but only just, and on the basis he leads by example. I reckon skills wise we've got depth to cover both, but his attitude lifts those around him (the engine room).

TMc because he is a tall forward/follower.

We dodn't carry many key talls, So Tmc being our most mature, Pedo aside is a big element of the team.

Also the thing not often stated is when breaking it down, we lack enough players taking enough marks during games.

A TMc specialty. Add to that a great runner, and he is a genuine key, to the team.

T Mac for me. We have serious depth through the midfield now. As good as he is, Viney isn't the loss he would've been this time last year.

That said, I am comfortable in our ability to cover both of them. That comfort level may go up or down pending on how we perform on Sunday.

The thing that Viney brings, that TMc doesn't, is a fierceness, a volatility at the contest 2nd to none.  His leadership is a Genuine Loss.

That tenacious attitude like a Pig Dog, to bring the bigger bodies to ground.  And to heel, when they get out of hand...  see rance.

 

TMc is far, far too much a gentlemen, to his detriment as a leader.

T.McD by a long way.

Jack Viney although very good is one of a dozen or so, rotating through the midfield.

Tommy as shown can play KPF, KPB, Ruck. Probably now the most versatile big Man at the club

It comes down to cover. To me Viney is an animal and plays in the same style as a Selwood . He can be covered by a variety of mids and we have many to rotate with. TMAC is versatile, pinch hit in the ruck play forward and back a rare breed. TMAC is  the one  for now. However together in the same side we would be very hard to beat .

I think we can cover Tommy pretty easily.  Pedersen is a very capable replacement if not the runner that Tom is.  Viney is a team-lifting player with his ferocity and damaging tackles.  I think it's that more than his disposals that we'll miss.

Structurally TMac, but Jack comes with so much passion and guts that he lifts the players intensity around him. He's our (co)captain so he will always be a big loss. 

Really hope his foot injury isn't going to set him back longer than the first third of this year.

Viney. He has the ability to take on a game. His absence was noticeable last season. He adds a big cog to the gearing. 

Tmac. Most definitely handy and adds a different dynamic to the front end but we can kick goals from many players. Toms effect is mainly about the front arc. Viney's is all over the ground.
