not sure of where Petty will end up but not on a wing !!!

Either CHF or CHB or FB or FF depending upon our key position players and who performs and also maybe as a swing and versatile key.

Lets just hope he ย can overcome his injury if not in 2020 but ASAP.

Sorry, poorly written. I meant playing Petty back would release Tomlinson onto a wing.

ย

After his first few VFL games I thought he'd be a very good defender but he did have a habit of taking front position and getting worked under it if not marking and is a bit one paced. But I was pleasantly surprised by his forward stuff last year. Either way there's certainly a spot for him and I'd like to have him locked away for at least another year soon.

Also I've haven't watched the injury updates lately, has Burgo provided any kind of time frame?

Would absolutely relish seeing him at CHB, we are screaming for another genuine 20-22 year old key back.ย

Won't replace Jacko As both are very different types of player NO ONE plays like Luke he is a freak and a complete X factor on ball and up forward as a floater.

Will be Key position back or forward

As much as I love jackson and I recognise how good he'll become as a ruck, he's kicked 3 goals in 6 games. Petty kicked 3 goals in 1 game.ย

That's my point DrD Petty "will be a KP either forward or back " not Jackoย as you are thinking from my postย

Jacko will be a ruckman plus mid on ballers plus forward who is versatile because if his range of skills and remarkable athleticism.

Of course Petty if at CHF or FF full time will kick more goals than Jacko but how many Jacko gets AND score involvements May notย differ a great deal in total.

it seems like 35 is going to be too deep for some clubs franchises (e.g. gold coast) to get down to, so 40 might be an okay number including both full list and rookie list (not that there seems to be much differentiation these days between the two)

given that the minimum amount of draft picks used is likely to drop to two, i'd say that'd be seven off our list before any trading even takes place

likely candidates:

  • nathan jones (retirement?)
  • charlie spargo
  • toby bedford
  • michael hibberd (retirement?)
  • kade kolodjashnij
  • aaron neitschke
  • oskar baker
  • marty hore
  • kade chandler
  • corey wagner
  • josh wagner
  • austin bradtke

that's twelve - personally of the seven who'd go i'd nominate:

  • kade kolodjashnij
  • aaron neitschke
  • oskar baker
  • kade chandler
  • corey wagner
  • josh wagner

as six likely certainties, then it comes down to what the decision is retaining experience (jones and hibberd) vs height (bradtke) and smalls (spargo, bedford, chandler)

It's interesting the only players advocating for the smaller list sizes are the ones that are on the biggest money, that thinking comes from a greed stand point, they would like to see less players so their pay stay the same.

The AFL hierarchy is the one advocating for smaller list sizes to reduce the tpp

ย given that for months have passed since I wrote that I still think the bottom six is about right

Err...Managers, an updated version ofย  Real estate officials.

ย

North Melbourne currently have 17 players out injured.ย  35-17=18....ย  I hope the AFL realise that would be a bad decision BEFORE they make it, not afterwards which is the norm.

17 out of 46 = 37%

37% of 35 = 13 players

35 - 13 = 22 players..................no probs

but seriously, a club would be able to add vfl players (or others) temporarily to their list when they dropped to a certain point

Guessing nothing less than a 60 goal season is acceptable from Petty then if that's how we're rolling with the maths...

With Tomlinson out for the season it is now Pettysย  time to shine.ย  Huge opportunity with a defined role and a block of games to sink or swim.

Had a taste a few weeks ago against Hawthorn and was good in the 2nd half.ย  The whole team was junk in the first half so I will cut him some slack for his shaky start in that game.

Is he fit and firing??

  • 3 months later...

Leave him alone for now. He does his job with aplomb and carries out the role he is given to the letter.

One week at a time.

Go dees.

Well done H Petty! Composed and getting better in the body on body contests (still needs work) and so good by footy. No Frost ball here!

I think that is the thing that I am most excited about.ย

He has plenty of time to develop physically. All kids do, and he is no different. While he's been beaten in body contests (Darcy Fogarty comes to mind), I was always confident he'd get better.

However, it was his kicking and decision making early in the piece that got me worried, especially against Hawthorn early in the year. However, having Lever and May directing traffic has been amazing for his development. Having Choco guiding him has no doubt helped immeasurably.

When Tomlinson is fit again, some posters have stated that theyโ€™d like Petty toย take on the CHF role, assuming that Tomo will take his CHB role.

I think that when Tomo is fit, Tomo is the one that hadย better find another role to play, because the way Petty hasย developed, there is no way Iโ€™d consider moving him from CHB.

Always been a huge Petty fan and he hasn't disappointed. Huge future with the dees, he just needed a good run with injuries.ย

Come the moment. Cometh the man.ย
ย

We all shed a tear for Adam Tomlinson. Footy is a cruel master.ย
ย

But thankfully Petty has stepped up and into the key position void. ย After 11 games in 3 years (nil through injury in 2020), Petty has played 17 games in 2021 and not disappointed. ย He seems to be more assured as the year progresses. Itโ€™s a key role too alongside Lever and May. ย
ย

Petty is becoming the player that he was drafted as. A young key position back with good marking and size to play the key position forwards. ย Keep on going young man.ย

Great to see that when May and Lever were both off the ground Petty took the role of backline general on himself.ย
I also enjoyed Gawn coaching from the bench. Important to never stop playing your role.ย

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, weโ€™re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury toย  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the teamโ€™s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - โ€œnam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin ambโ€ which roughly translated is โ€œevery heart beats true for the red and the blue.โ€ >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last weekโ€™s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeatย  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscrayโ€™s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last weekโ€™s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?
