See.. I reckon West Coast will have a huge drop next year & finish between 12 - 15. I think they might almost be forecasting that & are desperately trying to get some early picks for a quick rebuild. Even though they are playing finals this year.. I have us closer to the premiership window than them.

Hoping that is something Gaff also thinks the same thing and tells them it's either trade me this year or I walk next year. With the other players going from the midfield WC might want the pick to accelerate their rebuild now rather than waiting and hoping to change his mind.

I hate them as much as anyone but any forward line with Kennedy in it and if Darling brings the form hes shown in the second half this season is always going to kick a decent score.

Nic Nats secind efforts improve them in the middle and they are no slouches down back.

I think they are a middle of the road side but throw in the hometown umpiring and they are always going to be close to the 8

You have to get it in there to benefit from Kennedy and Darling and NicNat will tap it down to which first dibs mid?

The circus act creates that much carnage around stoppages it often clears a direct path for Shuey.

They are a better side with him in. They lack polish and pace to be a real gun midfield but still have enough soldiers to run through in Sheed Shuey Hutchings Reddan Yeo & Partington.

I'm not saying they will be a flag threat or anything but imo they wont fall to far from finals contention

This is it. Of course he's not going to have the highest contested ball numbers, it's not his job. His job is to run hard to create free options along the wins and push hard back to provide an option coming out of attack.

It's like people expect every player to be a hard ball king as well as quick on the outside and a marathon runner. It doesn't work like that.

Agreed.

If he's available, he'd be a good addition to our midfield.

Eagles will be top 6.

With Nic Nat back and Josh Kennedy to play 22 games they will be hard to beat. Especially at home.

Gaffs 3rd prize in the main trades likely so far .Kelly good but difficult, Lever a very, very  acceptable result and imminently achievable.

Gaff interesting but unspectacular and as for pick 10  sheesh ! IMO massive overs and would be a disappointing result behind the other two.

Would be happy to bid up on Kelly and Lever . If we want to be the best how about we step up to the plate for one the A graders.

IMO if they think it's best to trade out  a player say Kent and get a second rounder for someone else and offer that up for  Gaff that would be good result too.

If we were to get him i would do this:

pick 10 and 2018 first round pick to Adelaide for Jake Lever And Pick 18(assuming they win the premiership)

pick 18 to Weagles for Andrew Gaff

No way will WC accept pick 18 for Gaff.

They would likely get a first round compo pick by waiting for him to be picked up as a free agent.

No way would pick 18 be enough

I doubt it. No way will they get a first rounder. He'd have to be in the very top bracket of salary and he isn't that. Buddy got the biggest contract in history and he was only pick 18.

I'd be guessing at best an end of first rounder which after Academy and FS picks would push it out to early 20's. Unless it is a second rounder in which case it would be early thirties.

He's an All Australian who came 4th in the Brownlow last year and is top 5 in the league for kicks, metres gained and score involvements. He would net then first my round compo guaranteed. He'd be a great target for us to balance our overly slow inside midfield. Those saying he's no good have no idea about football.

Deciding factors on Compo picks are age, amount of salary, length of contract. The rest is irrelevant. As good as he is, he isn't a $700k player and if we want him we won't be paying him that. Maybe $550-$600 but nowadays that's not putting him in the elite first round compo band. It would be end of first round or second round. Compo picks usually don't reflect the true value of a player. Eg Buddy going for pick 18. According to Roosy if you get the chance to trade the year before do it because compo picks aren't worth it.

Picks are only worth what you can get for them. The interesting fact is that next year's draft is much better than this years. So pick 18 next year might get a better player than pick 10 this year.

Isnt 550-600 about 400-450 in last years language before the new player deal? Or did all contracts get a 20% bump up?

True, but if we offered next year's first rounder, it may end up being pick 18 anyway.

Gaff and Lever should be the 2 main targets this off-season. We may have to give up a bit for both but the idea of Gaff out in space on the wing dashing forward a delivering to our forwards would be excellent. Then Lever in defence cutting of marks and spoiling from behind( Last night Lever used the ball well coming out of defence would be a god send for us) with Hibberd, Jetta makes me a little more calmer.

Stringer would be good but, might be asking too much and pushing our budget a bit

If Lever & Gaff truly are within our grasp, I can't see any way we could get them both without giving up this year's & next year's first rounders (and probably more). However, we'd be getting two players of proven first-round quality for two players of likely (but not proven) first-round quality. And both the two players that we get would be exactly what we need.

The risk is that we carry forward a three-year "hole" in our age profile, so that if in 5-7 years we're near the top but without a flag, we have an old list (like Norf's now) that would need a major overhaul again.

Trade now, get the quality in now

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
