Collingwood's injuries are piling up, they are already planning for next year. Pendles and Wells would be playing if they were in contention.

There is also talk of Adams missing the match as he is having blurred vision from some hits. Add to that Reid being horribly out of form it would take a disaster of Melbourne-like proportions to lose this one!!

they are a bunch of kids and NQRs. Expect Buckly to be signed up for 2 years soon so no  emotion in it either aside from wanting to screw us over

  • Daniel Wells (quad)
  • Henry Schade (hamstring)
  • Jordan De Goey (hip flexor)
  • Levi Greenwood (knee)
  • Adam Oxley (hip/ groin)
  • Scott Pendlebury (broken finger)
  • Ben Sinclair (hamstring)
  • Travis Varcoe (elbow)
  • Tyson Goldsack
  • Alex Fasolo

a couple of the above may be played this week - this is going off last weekend.  also Grundy will be back

Those calling for Garlett to be dropped do you actually watch the games? He has a guy hanging of him everywhere he goes, the other defenders twice his size are gangbanging him at every opportunity and he draws an extra man most of the times when the ball is on the ground because he is so dangerous

To the extent where he was held while competing - in the last or second quarter - while the ball in dispute about 15 metres out from our goal.  If it was Dangerfield or Eddie being held like that one of the three blind mice umpires blows a whistle...

You could add Grundy to that list as well as according to Pies fans that want him rested and play Cox in the ruck.

Anyone else see watts not making the distance from 45 out at Casey? Used to slot those in. Maybe still not confident with his hamstring

Yes but he wasnt alone. I don't think the conditions were the best.

Interested to know why drop ANB? Apart from a few clangers and down on scoring I thought he was solid. Was down on tackles but his pressure was good.  He is our best user of the ball in the forward half this season along with Trac. Had 5 inside 50's today and has played his role consistently.

He's been solid, just lacks a bit of class.  In the group with Harmes Melksham and Hannan.

Salem & Watts for me, both great kicks and Frost provides great run out of the backline all 3 have that X factor you need in finals.

Mind you I'd be happy for nibbler to get a game instead of Vince ATM.

Or to hold his place if Vineys out

We need players who use the ball well by foot. We butchered it when trying to go through the middle.

Watts and Salem are two of our better ball users by foot. They would have been handy last match.

Stretch was poor, and Wagner was just lost. Both those boys won't retain their spot.

i actually thought the worm turned for Bernie yesterday, please eatch the replay again (its not quite so hard om  the heart) i saw enough.

Watts and Salem in

Stretch Hannan and Wagner out (allthough only Wagner stank),

and the mystery 3rd spot goes to someone who deserves a chance.

either Trengove or JKH.

Viney needs another week not based on anything other than how he plays and a guess at the pain he is in.

They must bring them in 4 Wags & Stretch

Collingwood's injury list doesn't give me confidence either. It's one of those games where whoever is out there could still beat us if we aren't careful

Did Vince not tag Rockliff, keeping him to 16 possessions?

I think you'll find that was Hunt. Except I think Rockliff tagged Hunt, not the other way around. Essentially a nil-all draw. (I know Rockliff kicked a goal, but he was not nearly as damaging as usual.)

I thought the same, LDC. Looked to me like Rockliff went to Hunt all day (and IMO I'd give the points to Hunt).

According to the AFL website, time on ground for Brayshaw was 63%, which compares with Wagner (62%), Stretch (66%) and Tyson (68%) as the others in the 60s. Other nominal onballers were Melksham (85), Jones (85), Lewis (85), Oliver (75), Petracca (78) and Neal-Bullen (84).

I can appreciate that Wagner and Stretch might have had their time shortened due to their performance, but I can't understand why Brayshaw and Tyson played unders. (Cue Tyson critics...)

Wagner and Stretch spent the majority of the fourth quarter on the bench. I'm pretty confident that was as close to an old fashioned "benching" as it gets.

I think Goodwin did the same thing with White in the Sydney game.

Salem is a must. I don't know why he was dropped but gees we need his class at half back. Vince and McDonald taking the ball out of the backline is a disaster. It makes me have multiple tiny cardiac arrests during games.

We gotta cut that crap out and put Salem back. With Lewis now playing wing and doing really well, there's a spot for Salem and it will be made available by dropping Wagner who is just not great at anything.

Sounds like Viney is a no go. And honestly Pedo and Hogan worked a treat yesterday. I'm worried Watts ruins that balance a bit. Unless they play Trac in the midfield all day, but he doesn't look fresh enough to do that.

So for me it's In: Salem Out: Wagner

Stretch was ordinary but I would give him another week. He has speed and skills that give us a nice balance.

The great thing is there are a good handful of players fighting for a spot in the team should we make finals, especially with Viney being an automatic walk up start when he's ready. That means everyone slightly on the fringe both in the seniors and at Casey should be playing out of their skins this week to get a go next week if we make it.

Strangely, I'd kind of be up for that. Although he was poor in his suspension game and he let the team down badly with his punch I feel like we played our best footy with him in there being a pest.

I don't think it'll happen because he didn't sound like he set the world on fire for Casey, but he's the kind of player people love to hate and can draw some undisciplined attention from the opposition.

Imagine if we play Sydney at the SCG in the finals and he comes in! I'd picture boos to rival what Adam Goodes got in Perth!

Agreed, I think Salem was dropped to kick him a little kick up the tush. Maybe started to feel comfortable in his spot, but I think it was the selection committee's intention to bring him straight back in. He obviously ruined that with the suspension, but Wagner is just not quite up to it and Salem has done that role well all year.

Vince just should not take kick ins, unless we're needing someone to roost it when we need to get a quick score he just gives me heart attacks almost every time. I don't know what has happened to him but his kicking boots have been well off this year, I know he had a toe injury at the start of he year but surely that's not still affecting him.

I'd still like to find a way to squeeze in Watts, Pedo is in fantastic form and I agree with not wanting to disturb that but Watts played some great footy last year as a link up forward. Jesse can play deeper,  Pedo and Watts can be the link men. Big thing is Watts will need to compete harder to either take the mark or bring it to ground.

Although they won't admit it, they must have one eye on a finals campaign that may go for more than one week. Consequently they won't be using anyone else apart from the core group that have performed over the year.

That means JKH, Trengove and Maynard are probably out of contention.

The players that are in contention would obviously be Salem, Frost, Watts and Bugg. For mine I thought Frost was good in the twos, Bugg was industrious but wasteful and Watts was O.k in conditions that didn't suit.

I agree that Wagner is making too many mistakes that end up in turn-overs so must be relegated and I also think Stretch is not best 22. Both these players should be kept ticking over and ready for any injuries but there is no point playing them this week.

I think Goody saw something in Frosts game against the Swans and GWS that under pressure he can do extraordinary acts of madness and try to take on a bit much. He was good in the twos and I think he needs to come back in if he is going to be a part of the finals as we need to get used to how the 3 talls in the back-line works.

I also think Watts needs to come back in if he is to play finals but now we are way tall. Maybe its Pedo and Watts isn't best 22. Crazy to even think that but balance is important and Goody likes a running team. Pedo's work in the last two weeks getting around the ground has been enormous. Reminds me of Brown for Collingwood in the 90 Grand Final. Had a massive bum but got super fit and was a great player for them. It would be a sad state of affairs if Watts missed our final team (if we make it). I think everyone wants him in the team so how it is orchestrated (if at all) will be interesting.

Salem is a must and I'd like to see Bugg in but he may be put into the bracket of next cab with Stretch and Wagner.

Overall I'd be happy if all of Watts, Frost, Salem and Bugg got a run this week but apart from Stretch and Wagner everyone else has done enough over the last two weeks to hold their spots.

Tough week for selection.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
