POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 22

For the love of all that is red and blue, thank every God in existence that we were able to win that.  Brisbane are no pushovers but we made it very, very difficult for ourselves.  We put the cue in the rack when we got 5 goals up and learned a very valuable lesson today.

But, we won.  We won it and have put our destiny in our hands.  There was still plenty to like - Pedersen's form, Hogan's 6 goals, Melksham's game... but we also played some poor footy at times and allowed ourselves to be hit on the break.  It's something that better and more experienced sides will make us pay for, but I would rather us go through this now than go through it in an elimination final.

It also showed us that we can never, ever switch off, no matter who we play.

But, having said all that - we won.  We are one step away from playing finals and then, anything can happen.  I loved how the club dug in at the end to ensure we turned it around and won the game.

Now to seal it next week against the filth.

So let's recap this week's posts in the Hogan thread:

1. We are better without Hogan in the side

2. He should earn it in the VFL like everyone else

3. Our fitness and medical staff are incompetent and negligent for letting him play

We'll take it and move on. We now need to beat Collingwood to make it a certainty; but we should be doing that anyway. We want to go into our elimination final with 3 on the trot and some good momentum. Let's do it against the old foe.

And no doubt they were posts by the usual suspects, Nash.  They aren't worth giving air too.

By the way, Brisbane aren't crap. You could see why they're last - they drop away for periods of the game - but I by no means consider this "getting away with it". We had a tough win against a team who brought it, and have a couple of genuine stars in their side in Beams and Zorko.

I only watched the final quarter, we got off to a flyer and were out to 32pts. I thought fantastic we'll cruise now, unfortunately so did the players! Why can't they jut do it easily!?

We've got the win, that's what matters. But Dees, we need to learn to put teams away. When you get out to a 30+ lead there shouldn't be any concerns, not when you're playing bottom of the ladder at home.

Credit to Brisbane, they looked well drilled. They'll come good.

When we got 32 points up you could actually see players switch off.

Lots of positives, especially Hogan who played his best ever game but our lack of composure and inability to really hammer teams is a huge concern.

I think it's a concern, but not a huge one.  With finals hanging over our heads you can see the players were struggling a little with the expectation and almost ran out of gas a little.  I think the tension and anticipation got to them a little.

But yes, to be a genuine contender in the coming years we need to put teams away better than we have.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
