I notice no 'Likes' for your reply backing up your earlier statement Steve. What you have said is a fact. Apart from the score line it was like a game which we could/would/should have lost by a much larger amount, (arbitrarily - up to the 15 goals which you said).

We were really outplayed, with perhaps 10 minutes out of the 100, when we were on top in general play. Because of their inaccuracy, I think most of us held hopes until early in the last quarter that we might fight back and make it a closer game at least. But if they had kicked more accurately from the start, all hope would have evaporated by mid 2nd quarter.

These games happen, and all the reasons why this happened to us have been pretty fully explored in previous posts. Most certainly it was not for lack of effort. (Allowing for the the impact of the successive 6 day breaks).

On another matter, one post stated that last night showed Pedersen, amongst several others, wasn't up to it. I think most serious football watchers know that when a team is overwhelmed, many fringe, (and other), players will look poor. Hunt and Oliver were amongst those yesterday. No one would suggest they are not AFL standard.

How then does Peder's get dissed like this having proven himself for about 10 weeks, - after one poor game in a team that was statistically thrashed?

This is exactly how I saw it. The umpiring was so unpredictable. So many unrewarded tackles on both sides of the ledger.

Edit: worth noting all presenters (Huddo, Dermie, King) agreed last night didn't change their outlook on MFC. I think its universally accepted we've been cruelled by circumstance.

Fully agree with your last comment - Goody never seems to lose his call, he knows where we are headed and how we need to get there.  We are most definitely in good hands!

Yeah, we did that for a couple months.

Footy is never easy and yes we look to be without Salem, Jones, and Viney for a month, and Watts and/or Garlett for one or two more weeks, but we are 8 and 6 and in a great spot to not look for nihilistic excuses to be despondent about watching footy in the last 2 months of the season.

It wasn't just a loss. It was annihilation. They could easily have kicked 10-15 more goals. Their inaccuracy made us look a heap better.

Sydney knew to play the wings coz we had no run in our legs it was so evident complete and utter disgrace.

I hope we recover but this has potentially destroyed our season why did we have to play our only Friday Night Games on a 6 day break returning from Perth? why not put us up against a Brisbane or Carlton on a Sunday coming back from Perth. All because of corporate GREED and proping up  Sydney market where all the money is, shame shame shame.

Notwithstanding our injury list and the effects of consecutive short turnarounds, that was a dreadful effort. So many players just can't handle the pressure of the big occasion against quality opposition. I thought our coaches had a poor game as well.

We've had a very good month given some trying circumstances. We have to bounce back with a win against Carlton, otherwise we risk going on a lengthy losing streak. Hopefully we get a few players back and a few guys putting their hands up at Casey today.

White - haven't seen a player so far out of his depth since Isaac Weetra. A career killing performance.

Wagner - typical Wagner game, horrid decision making, terrible disposal and half hearted defensive efforts. Not AFL standard.

Lewis - lazy and complete lacking in leadership. Stays only because there is no depth at Casey

Melksham - aside from one fantastic goal, soft and fumbly. Will always be a liability in big games.

Bugg - there is nothing worse than talking the talk, and failing so pitifully to walk the walk. Enjoy your holiday, hopefully without pay.

Harmes - thought the game would suit, but he was basically invisible. Should have been put in the middle at some point.

Neal-Bullen - he's had his chance, and just not up to it. Time to try someone else.

Stretch - worst game I've seen him play. No appetite for the contest.

Oliver - looked tired and had no effect when the game was in the balance. Has had a great year, so is excused.

Hunt - see Oliver.

Gawn - Sydney were in his head from early on. Soldiered on but had no effect. Should he have played given the short turnaround?

Tyson - indecisive and ineffective.

Vince - continued his steady decline.

Pedersen - no impact. Should have been sent back once he struggled up forward.

Otherwise Viney was our best player, despite only playing half a game. Tom McDonald battled hard. Hannan at least put his body on the line. Petracca's three notable contributions were three more than most of his teammates. Oscar & Frost kept trying despite no midfield support. Hibberd got plenty of football, but didn't use it well. Jetta made some bad errors that almost overshadowed his ample good work.

I don't like making excuses, but with the consistency of effort and intensity I have seen from our boys over the majority of this season, I'm ok with puting down last night as an anonomly with a number of mitigating factors.

The scoreboard was probably kinder to us than flow of the game dictated.  But I'm at least happy that I don't think the side threw in the towel or dropped their bundle.  What could have been easily a 60 - 80 point hiding was kept under control by good performance by our defense and the rest of the team doing it's best in the circumstances.  Probably still should have lost by 50 points, but Sydney's poor goal kicking let us out off a bit there.

The second quarter was the "annihilation".

After half time it wasn't that bad, not that we ever really looked like getting back into it.

I don't know how you can conclude that it was a "dreadful effort" despite the injuries and the short turnarounds.

It seems obvious to most, if not all, that we were cooked from the start. It's therefore not surprising that we were second to contests and our general enthusiasm and "zip" were missing.

As to "big occasions", we led Richmond for 3.5 quarters in front of 85,000 and only lost because of injuries, and we beat Collingwood in a tense game in front of 70,000. 

As to "quality opposition", we've beaten Adelaide in Adelaide, West Coast in Perth and the Dogs at Etihad. 

Let's not re-write the season based on one poor performance.

Agree just listened to him. We have a calm coach who will work hard to get us through this period of injuries and short turn arounds.

One thing he did say was he didn't see the bugg hit until after the game and in hindsight he should have spoken to Bugg about it during the game to help him get is focus back onto the game and dealt with it sooner.

I don't feel any less optimistic or excited about the trajectory of the team after last night. We are missing 6 of our best 10 players and we are physically stuffed. 

The AFL [censored] us good with the draw. Fuming!

White and Wagner were simply not up to it: 4/5 years ago they would have been best 22, so we have come a long way but unfortunately our depth is still too shallow.
