Now that we've come good, I quite often here the old 'yeah so you should be with all your draft picks' yet let's look at the 22 we had on the weekend.

Note * is what we gave up in trade and not their original pick number.

I count that as only 4 first rounders that played on the weekend. Make no mistake we are being coached and developed properly to go with some excellent trading.

I hear and read this all the time. Unfortunately opposition supporters are so clueless, they are living in the days of when we drafted players such as Trengove, Scully, Morton, gysberts, Strauss, blease etc. No idea the turn over our list has and how many gems we have actually found late in the draft.

You ask any one eyed opposition supporter what pick we got T mac, Harmes, Neal bullen, Hannan, Stretch etc they'd have said between 1-25.

Yeh exactly right. Granted we've got Jones, Hogan (traded in) and Watts to come back in, I think our original point still stands. We're hardly GWS and I think our coaching staff and co should  be applauded

Every successful team has people trying to bring them down. Sydney with COLA, Cats with father sons, Hawks with priority picks and free agents etc etc

Viney and Stretch probably would have gone lower were they not father sons, but we aren't the only club in that situation either.  No club can match the gargantuan gifts of GWS in terms of draft picks/recruiting concessions.  Given we have found so many dimonds in the rough, an undervalued concession that GWS had for a number of years was to have access to an expanded list, which allowed them to have their cake and eat it too.  

Doesn't matter so much in the end though, what GWS have got in terms of consessions and top end tallent has made them arrogant, with a sense of entitlement.  We have done it tough and struggled for many years and that adversity makes us stronger and as much as Viney's athletic attributes and footy skill set make him a good player, it's his passion and love of the club which make him an unstoppable bull of a player.

Thanks for posting that. I didn't realise it was that clear cut. Something to shove up my Collingwood mates' collective bung hole. (I even heard one of the idiot commentators the other day describing Petracca as a number one pick)

Note quite true.  We did get a few concessions, but they were mostly watsed.

The biggest gift we could be accused of being given of late was what could be viewed as over compensation for Frawley which gave us essentially the third pick in the draft which landed us Gus Braeshaw, but that's hardly paying dividends right now and might or might not even be viewed as sparing another team a wasted pick if he can not get over his concussion problem.

i think having not had a priority pick since 2009 makes it pretty clear cut that our resurgence this year has to be attributed to good drafting and player development, not bonus picks or a helping hand.

The sleeper issue is the ongoing financial and player concessions that will need to be given to the Lions, the Suns and in time the Giants.

Don't overestimate Sydney. If they take a downward turn on the ladder they may quickly enter the world of irrelevancy. The Lions have showed how that can happen.

The fight in Melbourne will be between the haves and the have nots. When you have an empire such as Collingwood it grows itself and takes a lot to kill off. If you are an MFC, Saints etc you are coming from a much smaller base that does not deliver super profits.

Would be interested if someone knows the added financial benefits to the Bulldogs because of their premiership.

I suspect it was less even in unadjusted dollars than the benefit accruing to Collingwood from its 2010 flag and even perhaps its 1990 flag.

West Coast are another that will sink or swim on the new stadium deal.

Opposition supporters aren't going to understand the Prendergast effect and the fact that our 2008-2012 era drafting has been flushed down the toilet.

They're not going to understand that this has not been one continuous, long rebuild. Roos-Goodwin-Taylor-Viney-Mahoney-PJ started again completely from scratch. Everything that happened before 2013 is irrelevant.

Opposition supporters don't understand the anguish that we supporters, and long term players like Nathan Jones have endured to get to this point.

And opposition fans don't care about any of that. All they want to do is rain on our parade now that we're climbing out of the quagmire.

Try and educate them if you've got the energy. I don't, so my strategy is to just ignore it. They don't know, and don't want to know. We know, so let's just enjoy the ride together. Let everyone else cry their salty tears.

From 1858 to around the 1970s, if you described one club as arrogant with a sense of entitlement, I suspect most neutral supporters would have thought it described us. The team that did it tough and struggled for many years during that same time could have been any one of Fitzroy, North Melbourne, Footscray, South Melbourne or Hawthorn. Times change.

The thing that has the biggest long term influence on a Club's performance is the AFL's scheduling.

Teams like Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton & the Swans get a huge boost by getting more choice time "free to air " games than Clubs like Melbourne & the Dogs.   This leads to more sponsorship $ & more members due to their greater exposure.

This means more $$ & better facilities & makes it easier to recruit quality players.

Tell them we've got an armchair ride from the AFL.

Tell them half our side are top ten picks.

Tell them we don't deserve our success.

Tell them that because of that, their team should have beaten us.That they are the rightful winners and it's all very unfair.

In all seriousness though, I actually think most opposition suporters actually realise our situation and are happy for us to be having some success again at last...unless we are beating their team of course.

I think we would be the absolute fan favorite against GWS or just about anyone else should we make the GF sometime soon, except perhaps against St Kilda and then we would probably split  the market a bit.
