It's worth re-iterating that Steven May chose MFC over offers from Collingwood and Hawthorn who also made finals this year - really who would've thought that even 2 years ago?

And he cited the key reason was "the guy" Simon Goodwin, that means he preferred Goodwin over Clarkson and the reborn new age Buckley!

Wake me up, I must be dreaming!

Our backline has gone from a shambles three to four years ago to now being a strength. We've added Hibberd, Lewis, Lever and now May. It's unbelievable.

Not in my time once as a supporter have felt confident in our back six as an entire unit. And now I will be.

To my ears, it sounds as if many posters who have questioned the May trade haven't actually watched him play, or nearly enough of him. Let me elaborate.

In May, we're getting pretty much exactly what Frost offered us in terms of speed and offensive play from our back-half. However, unlike Frost, May is an exceptional one-on-one defender and intercept player, he has elite foot-skills for a key defender, he is super smart and composed with ball in hand and he plays with a similar intensity to Viney both at the ball and man.

He is similar to Rance in that he has the closing speed and awareness to leave his opponent and halve contests that otherwise would be pencilled in as a win for opposition sides. That trait is extremely special.

He is a leader and former captain. His aggression and presence are going to change the entire look and feel of our defence. During the year, I am certain that opposition key forwards would have been strolling into our backline, seeing Oscar and Frost as our key defenders and thinking they'd have a day-out. Franklin, Riewoldt, Kennedy, Hawkins. All of them would have licked their lips. May's addition in that sense is enormous. Opposition sides know that May is aggressive and plays to hurt, and that advantage is significant. Opposition forwards second guessing at contests is exactly what you want as a defender. I can't remember ever having that in our backline save maybe for Jetta on smaller forwards, but never key forwards. They've always had something laugh at.

Posters really do underestimate what he's going to provide and the onflow effect he'll have.

His arrival is as big as any imo.

I know you have been lamenting our backline for a the past few years as I have. Our additions are an absolute game changer. Added to that we have serious grunt and hurt factor.

May, Viney, Vanders, Hibberd and Jetta are contested beasts. Oppositions will know they have been tackled and that actual and preceived pressure will be a great bonus for us.

I think you can add Viney, Melk and Hibberd to the list OD. Certainly not the side we were pre Roos

It is a time I would prefer to forget PSD

Agree re Ingerson, a very underrated fullback. But my favourite would be the late, great Sean White.

Often you look at old clips and it looks like old fashioned football. Sean Wight could slot easily into our current side. Goodwin would love him.

This Club's been through a bit...

A young number 5 looked allright too.

One of the things I love about this is that not only have we secured May we prevented the Pies (on of our premiership competitors) from landing him. If there's on thing they need in their team, it's a key back as evidenced in the GF.

Loved Sean, one of my all time faves. Looking at the clip I saw a bit of Hibbo. Goodwin would have absolutely loved him. With Harley Balic leaving 27 is free for May (or does he get 1 from Hogan?).

It gives you a nice warm feeling when you hear May's comments.

A coach that the players love, finals success, a destination club etc etc.

Its like a new club. But Goodwin is at the centre of it all.

It was also refreshing to hear him say he felt he had plateaued in last couple of years, my concern with him when trade was first raised, also accepting some responsibility for Gold Coast shambles on the field

Posters need to get to training to see and hear Goody in action, also to have a chat, which he is open to, to see the real coach

His post match conferences are like Roos, lots of words but saying absolutely nothing, leaves the words that matter for inside the club

Clearly the case, given the players love for the man.

You have to have something going for you to gain the love and respect of your playing group.

I always thought that Goody lacked emotional intelligence but clearly I am wrong and as you say he keeps the important stuff in house and feeds the media with media speak.

Just great to hear May so enthusiastic about our Team, Our Culture, Our Coach and wanting to buy into the club, I found it so refreshing after all the Hooplaaaaaaaaaaa.............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She’d a tear I must confess watching that. His balance, poise and focus on the ball was floweresque. Horrible to think we lost 3 champions way too soon.

Give May No. 1. Preuss 12 & KK no. 23.

I'd give May 23, because three and two are Five and May is the fifth month of the year

Hijacking the thread a little (I’ll create a new one later) but I’d give Preuss 12 so he’s next to Max in the locker room.

I've heard a rumour that Max is actually auctioning off that real estate, describing it as being in a 'prime location'!

MFC have put together a group of some tough S.O.B's.

It's a point i've reiterated numerous times on this forum previously, If you look back over time and some of the greatest teams that have ever played this great game, one of the major ingredients in any successful team is the amount of mongrel in them.

If your team doesn't have it, you won't win anything.

May's inclusion adds to the mongrel factor.

Not only are we now a tough side, but we seem to be more disciplined. I noticed on Brownlow Night that we had no-one ineligible through suspension. I may be wrong, but I think no other team had zero ineligible players.

That's correct, most of May's suspensions and brain fades at the Suns were all down to frustration that his team were so [censored].

He won't have those problems at the Dees, he'll be an enforcer and continue to grow as an outstanding leader.

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
