Brayshaw can't come in off the back of the game he played in the VFL. HE needs to start dominating their again. He was just slightly better than horrible yesterday.

I didn't see Saturday's game, but nothing I have seen or read since has changed my mind on our current setup.

We are at least 1 tall down on what we should be playing with and probably 2. With Weideman basically a passenger at present, that would make 3. 

Playing both McDonalds allows Tom to play looser and be a third man up if required. Playing Pedersen allows him to ruck when Watts would be matched against a bigger and stronger opponent, and I believe that the three tall forwards worked well last year.

I would like to see:

IN: Hogan, Pedersen, McDonald

OUT: Weideman, Hannan, Melksham

I can't recall him ever dominating at VFL level. He has played some very solid outstanding games though.

Against most other sides I'd feel that we're a tall short, but bringing in McDonald against Richmond will make it even harder for us to contain their small forwards, all of which have genuine pace. That being their structure, bombing it into their forward line isn't the way they deliver the ball. They've been good at hitting up the small targets or kicking it into space for them to run onto.

Hibberd if fit is light years ahead of jnr burger.

Its now abour winning. That means playing your best 22 week in week out.

 Kids can be developed but not at ths expense ( anymore) of results.

Since Hogan has been gone in rounds 3 and 4 those numbers have plummeted.  He's far better when Hogan has the heat of the opposition and he's not the main key forward.  Why drop him when he's carried the load and Hogan is about to come back ?

As for Pedersen ?  I don't rate him as an AFL key forward.  He's done OK at times, but he's not the answer or the future.

Pedersen has never kicked four goals in a game.  He's played 61 of them.  Forgive me if I don't see him as the answer.

Seemingly, Goodwin doesn't either.

Carried the load?  More like he filled a slot on the team sheet.  While you may be right that he performs better when Hogan is there, the fact that you said he carried the load indicates you are very biased on this issue.

Weideman may well be the future, but we need to win games now.

Brayshaw did look sluggish and a tad disinterested to me but i read today that Williamstown put alot of work into Gus so maybe he was feeling the effects of extra attention on him.

He dominated the practise Casey matches before round 1 in his debut season. They were only practise matches but he was clearly too good for the VFL and had the ball on a string. He is a shadow of that player at the moment.

I'm sure he will bounce back quickly.

While I get where you're coming from, a lot depends on what you expected from this year

For what it's worth, I don't believe we can win the flag this year. It would take a massive Bradbury performance from a few other teams for us to do that. We ain't good enough yet. So my view is that if we can't win it, we should continue to develop the team towards a position where we can. So for mine, if he's fit Weideman plays.
To say Weed "cariried the load" is I agree a bit over the top. But he did try to perform some of Hogan's role without much success. I think it was Old55 that commented on Weed's positioning on Saturday. I'd suggest it was largely because he was caught betwixt & between as he tried to play a role higher up the ground.

When Hogan returns to his rightful CHF position Weed will play mainly deeper forward. This allows him to lead towards the ball carrier again and attack the ball drop in contested marking situations. Much like R1 which I think most supporters found acceptable.
Casey play a team who were flogged by 30 goals. While he can go back there and kick a bag, what will it teach him ? What does it add to his development and that of our team ?

If you want to build towards a flag winning team, I'd suggest that Weed plays most weeks (he's 19 and at some stage will need a break - not after 4 rounds though). If you want a few years of finishing 7th and 8th, bring in the likes of Pedo

Tearing games apart at VFL level isn't a numbers game. As we've seen in the past with plenty of players getting insane leather poisoning. Magner, Valenti etc etc.

I didn't watch the game yesterday so I can't comment on his performance. But considering those who have already made mention that he was targeted heavily by the opposition, is it not obvious that the FD would have been looking for signs other than how much ball he got? Things like the quality of his touch, his ability to work hard, compete etc etc?

Seriously, I would wager possession count at VFL level is not even half of what coaches look for when considering who to bring in to an AFL side. 

Another thing to consider would be that due to Gus being so heavily targeted and tagged meant that Trengove was able to have a field day. Did those watching consider this?

I think we need Gus on Monday night. And I'd have him ahead of Tyson for that midfield spot.

I agree there is a case to be made for developing players this year rather than wobble into a meaningless final series.   I'm not focussed on finals.   I'd say take the development position later in the season rather than risk looking a basket case early in the season, both from the commercial and players confidence point of view as well as us long-suffering supporters. 

I don't see that Weideman cannot develop at Casey.  First there are a lot of big bodies in the VFL who may not have as much skill as AFL backmen, but still players for him to learn to out-muscle and mark against.  Second, if he dominates there it will give him confidence which is often half the battle.   Getting flogged in the AFL doesn't help that. Nevertheless I take some comfort from ProDee's stats showing he does better when Hogan is around.

But that's just my 2 cents, I am sure the coaching department knows better than me (and everyone else on here).

The backline needs straightening up...in how it works. Hibberd ought to be a monty for that. Who makes way ? On form.....most likely Milkshake.

I'm not fussed who Hibberd replaces...as long as it is NOT JETTA!

Given pre-season coaches commences I'm always concerned that Jetta may be considered the 'fringe' player who has to give way.

Brayshaw was heavily tagged against Willy. Let him have a kill against North Ballarat. Trengove must be considered after two excellent performances at Casey. If not, y is he on the list? Hibberd is a no brainer.

I like Brayshaw and share your concerns about Tyson's lack of skill/disposal given his leg speed. But I watched the second half of the VFL yesterday and Brayshaw fumbled and missed too many targets by hand and foot. He won't get a call up based on his game on the weekend.

Agree... we were a tall short against Fremantle and that cost us the game. 

Weideman is injured and won't play. We need 3 talls in the forward line and 4 mid/smalls.

talls - hogan, watts, pederson

smalls/mid - tracca, Kent, garlett, ANB
