We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Gees I hope the club asks why Watts didn't get a 50 when Johnson dragged him down at the end of the 3rd after he took that mark.

Was clearly a 50 and even Johnson knew it. Would have gifted us a goal, and, well, the rest is history.

If we cannot win these games in the first half of the season when our draw is favorable, we are certainly going to get torn a new one in the second half of the season

Yep should have "Iced the game" a game I might add we didn't deserve to win

FWIW

Tommy Mac is a laiblity down back, Punches when he should mark and tries to mark when he should punch

Viney is in dreadful form and should be dropped but he won't be

Weeds needs time at Casey

Neal Bullen not up to it and probably never will be, same might be said of Harmes

Bernie had a shocker but played under huge dificuluty I am told

Clarry great but needs to kick more

Spencil very good

Well I reckon the following changes should be made next week

Outs ( Viney should be dropped but wont be) Neal Bullen, Weeds, Harmes

In Brayshaw, Pedo and of course Colonel Hogan! I would also consider Kennedy who always has impressed me when he has come into the team. Bugg stays good today i thought!

My first posting for the season.  I was there today unfortunately, and again the MFC team including coaches lost a game on our home turf that we should have won.  This nonsense does untold damage to the brand we are trying to build.

Membership will continue at a snails pace, sponsors will look closely at our weakness as an onfield team, and the media are just in the pounce position to give to us as a club.

off field Jackson cannot do anymore, he is doing his level best.  It's the mindset of players who STILL have no killer instinct as top teams do.

they just screwed themselves up the bum yet again against a team rebuilding from interstate.  I will watch them play as I do, but with no expectations now, I'm simply fatigued with the garbage rhetoric from the club.

This club cannot handle expectations no matter who is coach.  Poor poor result today, totally fed up.

Correct. Still no REAL leadership onfield.

No, it didn't cost us the win. There are/were any number of factors across the whole game, some of them just down to luck (e.g. ball bounces) that cost us the win.

The only reason you're singling out these two is that they occurred in the last quarter and are thus easier to remember. It's called availability bias.

I think the obvious thing to me today was weideman wasn't able to compete.

Frost I think is ahead of oscar for now, he has a bit more speed and agility and a bit more grunt

we really need hibberd to come in and play a role so we can push Vince up onto a wing.

Id consiser playing Viney as a forward

Wasn't a good day for big Sam Weideman. But the role he's asked to play is ridiculous.

Spent the whole game either 40m or 80m away from a kicker. Not just in game play but from most stoppages.

Someone would have the ball on the back flank and he'd be hovering down the line seemingly never encouraged to lead. Some of that might be his fault but so often it looked like he was instructed to keep the forward line deep.

Then there'd be a throw in at half forward and he'd position himself 40m from the pack about 30m from goal, with Garlett or others deep. Time and time again the kick would be bombed forward from the stoppage and then he'd stand and try and compete for the ball but get no run or jump at it.

From a stoppage just out side 50 I have no idea why he isn't positioned either in the goal square of even in front of the behind post so he can read the play and hit the drop zone at pace.

I hope he's dropped because it's just unfair to put a young key forward in a spot where he's always in no mans land. Petracca got to play CHF today and lead up at the ball carrier. Watts got times where he could go deep and run at the ball. As did Garlett running back in to space as the deepest forward. Weed was used as a decoy and got decoy like results.

I'm as gutted as anyone, but just to keep some perspective, we have played some very good footy this year, with some very good players out of the side.

We lost this game in one quarter today, we threw the win away last week against a top 4 side.

Doesn't excuse it, but just a reminder that it is an even comp and we are right in the mix if we can keep it all together and get that consistency.

Considering Roos tried to spend years teaching them to defend, it's alarming how lazy our mids are pushing back when they lose possession of the ball. No team should ever be out numbered in their own defensive 50. It is unacceptable in any circumstance and is purely due to not working hard enough both ways. You don't have to be a skilled team to push back and defend to stop momentum. The 3rd quarter today was unacceptable in any circumstances by any team at AFL level.

the players should be forced to watch it on loop until they understand the work rate that is required to play at the highest level.

Frost just isn't just ahead of Oscar, He's LIGHT YEARS ahead, Oscar should now only play if we have a lot of injuries! IMV And I have been saying it for yonks!

Well, yes, but you simply can't win every game, it is impossible. This year is extremely even, and my point was simply that if we find that consistency, we are as good a team as any in the whole comp, perhaps bar GWS and Adelaide. Of course it is big if, but nearly every other side has similar "ifs" hanging over them.

There are certain posters who paint it in a way that if we aren't 22-0 at the end of the home and away, it is a failure.

Melbourne are a 4 - 0 side.

People sooking because things didn't go the Dee's way.

Injuries, suspensions and a couple of little mistakes by the likes of Vince and ANB.

Melbourne at this point are 2 -2. Could easily be 4 - 0 if a few things went in there favour.

Could just as easily be 0-4. We are where we deserve to be.

100% agree. Even if you just flood back and stop the momentum, it's inexcusable to give up 8 goals in a row to any team ever.

You're right. It seemed to be a philosophy-driven decision not to flood. We'll beat them playing our game or we won't win at all mentality. Goody strikes me as a very flexible and adaptable coach. He said as much on the radio pre-game, but in retrospect we probably should have put a few players back midway through the third, when they got ahead.

The only way I can see this being a positive is if it makes the club take a good hard look at itself, like the way a couple of big losses in 2006 'woke up' the talented but underachieving Geelong team.

Goodwin's first crisis, I'm sure I'm not the only one watching intently.

Wouldn't say it's a crisis, but it's certainly Goody's first proper test.

They are a good team Freo. Midfield is elite. We had no answer for Mundy, Fyffe, Neale, etc. Johnson back playing well and McCarthy firing they will worry many teams this year.

No they won't. If any of those three get injured, they're stuffed.

Neale turned the game for them in the third. They killed us on the spread, but I still think they'll finish bottom 4.

The one thing I want the players to take out of today is for this to REALLY hurt.  To cut them deep and to make a commitment to the club to make sure this doesn't happen again.  I want them to come out next week against the Tigers and make a statement, and that statement is that this weekend was an aberration.  We've got an opportunity to put it right and there are still 19 rounds of footy left, so we have time to make amends.  Let's just hope we can do it.

This is what I said last week. We clearly didn't hurt after last week. We obviously felt we'd romp it home. I hope they learn, but I don't see it just yet.

So Smith, who in his one game had 6 disposals, is your answer to why we lost?

Step away from the keyboard OD.

Smith would not have missed that goal and would have at least provided someone for Freo to worry about.

Smiths disposals were 50% better and included a goal.

No 26 should be that good. But the bit that pisses me the most is it was as predictable as the sun rising.

At the game today and noticed they put Watts back for the last few minutes of the second quarter.

Good idea but he was badly outplayed when the ball came to ground and well... we know what happened.

Why didn't we putt Watts and a crumber back ... one on one ground play is and never has been Watt's strength

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
