The MRP system is deliberately weighted against an appeal

This is the biggest joke about the whole thing. Melbourne should be able to take that hogan incident and argue a case that it is only low impact without any risk. They wouldn't be claiming he should get off, they would still be saying he is guilty. But for some reason that would mean he risks 3 weeks, catch 22.

Do you think a club doctor would dodgy up a report to get an opposition player weeks ? I'm all for a good conspiracy but not sure I buy that one.

Just like when Bernie got done for elbowing a north player in the throat last year, the north player didn't even touch his throat afterwards which would indicate Bernie missed.

Agreed. Who care's whether or not Cripps has a fractured jaw. Is it going to change anything?

nup.

Hogan and Lewis need to sit and suck it up like their supporters.

We're sounding like collingwood/carlton/richmond supporters right now with the whinging.

At least they are not season ending injuries and Hogan will have time to get over any niggles. The reality is that we have to learn to play without some of our stars during the season as a result of injury or suspension. Better now than later. Agree with some other comments that all players have to be more disciplined.  You can be tough and hard without getting suspended.  Because everyone is watching.

the system is broken when you rely on the club doctors report, just like every other person they vary in opinion, Thompson smacked Dangerfield across the face with a elbow yet the Geelong doc only thought it was low impact. Inconsistent rubbish.

Stop the dumb crap and neither would have gotten any time.

The MRP is weighted against appeals, yes, but my first point helps players from being rubbed out if followed.

It is one thing to observe an incident from the stands or video footage and come up with a conclusion lacking in all of the facts.  It is entirely another thing to 'hear' the case.  Regardless of the jurisdiction, a kangaroo court has never served any useful purpose.

hogan was stupid, and so was lewis too.

dumb things to do.

What was it that you saw Jesse do that I didn't see and I was 20m away.

His action was to get Rowe away like a pestering blow fly.

His hand was open as he pushed him away in the neck.

It wasn't a strike it was a push open handed.

I would back that action against anyone.

Seriously...if you punch a bloke to the head off the ball you should expect weeks.

We have 2 players behaving like spoilt brats that have been unable to have discipline over their emotions.

There is no conspiracy by Carlton or the Afl and Cripps is not faking a fractured jaw.

Dumb and mentally weak.  Goodwin and the leadership need to jump on this.

No matter how many times I watch the incidents, I see nothing but good clean strikes to the head/jaw. I can't understand the surprise at these penalties.

And people comparing them to the Thompson hit, yeh, that is a load of crap. He got off real light.

This is a bit of a joke. I have looked at Hogans over and over again and it just seems to be low contact with almost an open palm. It looked like it just slid up off his chest. Lewis was given the 3 due to Cripps having a fractured jaw post match. But apparently taking a dive is almost as bad as a broken jaw these days. If anyone saw Scott Thompson's hit on Dangerfield you can see that taking a dive is the only reason between 1 and 2 weeks. I mean Thompsons was an elbow to the head. Tell me how that's better than a palm.

Just wear it.

MFC becoming antisocial and it comes at a price, so be it. Bernie comes in for Lewis and be interesting to see who replaces Hogan. Maybe it will be Spencer, remember we beat Geelong without Hogan before with Spencer up forward. If Spencer comes in expect Jack to play CHF or maybe go small and play Hannan CHF and bring Bugg in to annoy Dangerwood

Haha jeez there are a lot of silly sausages on here defending two stupid, unnecessary and fairly cowardly acts.

Cripps has a hairline fracture in his Jaw from Lewis.

I mean holy [censored], imagine if it were two Carton players and one of the victims happened to be our best mid who was potentially going to miss because of an injury caused by a hit to the head? Demonland would be losing its [censored].

Get some [censored] perspective already.

We should not be surprised when these penalties are not replicated for other incidents later in the year. This can only be the MRP trying to make a stand early in the season.

It is such a mediocre operation in there. No transparency and rewards for petals like Rowe indulging in acting classes.

Is it my imagination or do we routinely do badly with the MRP?

Posted (edited)

  - dumb  - do the crime do the time: however

 - the penalties do appear to be harsh

 - everyone has got to stop comparing incidents - we know there is zero consistency on what gets cited by the MRP and how they calculate a penalty.

 - taking a dive and acting classes ? really ? they both got whacked in the head and posters tell them stop acting ?

Really? You know it's from Lewis and not from incidental contact in the other 117 minutes of football?

Who are the MRP members this year anyway?  Is Mark Fraser still the Chairman?

This is the latest I can find:  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-02-22/extiger-don-join-mrp

MRP members:

  • Chris Knights (ex Adelaide)
  • Jason Johnson (ex Essendon)
  • Michael Christian (ex Collingwood)
  • Nathan Burke (ex StKilda)

They are all ex plalyers.  Not sure what schooling, if any they have in medical matters, gathering or weighingevidence etc.  Do they even have check sheets to evaluate each case.  Surely, they would question why the Geelong doctors medical evidence on Danger had them assess as 'low impact' to the head (from an elbow) but the Carlton doctor evidence had Hogan and Lewis classified as 'medium impact'.

It seems they can't even apply consistency in the same week let alone week to week.  Baffling!

And you know it's not ?

We know that the MRP do get a report from the club after incidents to see what impact it had if any. I suspect that the report is saying a fracture and it was caused by this incident

Are you suggesting that Carlton lied in a medical report to the AFL ?

I think I prefer the alternative  - the medical report says there is a hairline fracture caused by the incident. It does appear to make just a little more sense.

With reports now coming through that Cripps copped a fractured jaw then no doubt Lewis deserved his wack.

Lets cop our medicine and move on. Pretty bloody [censored] off but so be it whinging won't change anything.

[censored] its annoying losing key players to silly suspensions!

Again - trying to get comparisons between non related games ( even the same game) will do your head in.

Hogan: 2 with an early plea. Quote: The incident was classified as a three-match sanction.

Lewis: 4 down to 3 (includes a one week carryover penalty).  Quote: The incident was classified as a three-match sanction. The player has an applicable bad record which impacts the penalty, increasing it by one match to a four-match sanction. An early plea enables the player to accept a three-match sanction.

Absolutely ridiculous.  This is a repeat of the Trengove on Dangerfield tackle.  Melbourne being made an example of.

Club should appeal!!

On what basis can they appeal? They both punched a player in the face behind the play.

Posted (edited)

Wow the MRP hate us, fair enough on the Lewis one given the injury but 2 weeks for Hogan is ridiculous.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
