Why haven't we seen Hulett play at all during JLT?
From all reports he is a big body who can play footy well.
I am really keen to see him play.
Just curious...

Thank you.

No Saty, I was just going on DeeSpencer's report:

For whatever reason, I wouldn't be surprised to see Spencer in & Watts out, with something like this as the excuse.

Gee Akum, you're clutching at straws there.

There is a myriad of reasons that a player can come off second best in a marking contest, and I'd imagine (in this case) "being pushed aside" is a long way down that list.

Did you read DeeSpencer's report?

He said that he got pushed aside in the contest and landed heavily on his shoulder.  That can easily happen.

For what it's worth, I don't think Watts is injured, but you can easily come off second best in a marking contest by being pushed aside and landing heavily.

I did read it, and it sounded to me that it was basically a full contact drill where two players were launching themselves from different angles to make a contest.  I back this up by his comment about the drill here;

"Too be honest it looked to be a pretty dangerous drill so I wasn't all the surprised when someone went down."

Of course it had to be Watts that was the "someone".  Any other player and I guarantee that they wouldn't have been questioned about how easily they got pushed out of the contest, especially implying that the incident would be used as the reason for them to not be selected in round 1.

Oh no not contact during a training drill! I hope Hullett was put into the naughty corner because a training spectator deemed it 'reckless.'

Some of the players do swears at training too.

Having watched him all last season at Casey and the few number of training sessions I've been too, I disappointedly don't think Hulett will ever make it past VFL unless he has a huge development spike in the next season or two, I feel bad for the guy as he seems to work hard but ultimate I don't think he will get there.

For what it's worth, I don't think Watts is injured, but you can easily come off second best in a marking contest by being pushed aside and landing heavily.

To quote DeeSpencer:

"The forwards where doing a drill where Chaplin kicked the ball up to 2 players from about 30 out and they both flew for the mark. Hulett came in from one side and shifted Watts in the air with his body and he landed pretty heavily on his shoulder."

Now I'm going to play the pedant here and say that he did not push Watts aside and DeeSpencer certainly did not say any such thing.  You will note that both players flew for the mark and that Hulett shifted Watts in the air.  I would argue that once you are in the air, there is very little you can do to stop such movement happening as there is nothing for the player to get purchase on, and if Watts was higher in the air than Hulett, then he is going to be tumbled over.

Stating that Watts was "pushed aside" makes it sound as though he was beaten in a contest of strength, and going by DeeSpencer's description, nothing could be further from the truth.

I attended my first ever training session yesterday and the thing that stood out was how tight the boys are with each other.

Also i would like to shout out a MASSIVE THANK YOU to the lovely lady who assisted me with lots of inside info the general public doesn't hear.

I arrived after getting off the boat completely unorganized however she gave me half dozen playing cards/marker pen and i was able to meet the boys and have them all signed aswell as big Max signing my copy of Inside Footy which he thought was amusing.

Ironically i parked outside the Holden Centre( Yes i know... its the enemy) to grab a drink and in walked Bucks for his morning coffee. Before i know it HE starts up a conversation and wanted to know about me...wtf? What a gentleman, and very down to earth individual. Could not have met a more genuine human being. Topped off my morning !!

Two players side by side, 5m apart. Ball gets kicked out in front. Players move towards it and together, jump and attempt to mark. Most of the times one player slotted in ahead of the other player and got to the ball first, as far as I could tell there wasn't a designated front or back player. A couple of times elbows or arms went towards head and neck, no real harm done there.

Watts and Hulett happened to get together at the ball at the same time. Hulett's about 193cm and 95+kg, Watts looks like 196cm and 90kg. They collided hip and shoulder together, Watts probably had less momentum and less weight and ended up getting shifted as I said. Like a heavy paint tin crashing in to a light paint tin - inertia. As far as I could tell Hulett did nothing wrong. The point of the drill was to attack the contest with strength and body control in the air.

Either way, looked like a stinger. After a bit of time on the deck Watts got up, could move his arm, got checked over by the physios and walked off. He might be a little sore but should be able to play for Casey and play through it. If not, then it's more a question of whether it was a worthwhile drill than any concern over Hulett or Watts' actions.

Wasnt a good training run from watts yesterday.

I think he is really feeling the pressure as i saw first hand

Hannan took a screamer over him and then to top it off he got crunched hard when he hit the deck on his shoulder.

Kudos though as he still took time after training for signatures with half of Gosches Paddock imprinted on his shoulder.

Hulett 'attacked' the whole drill, yes he needs  to demonsttate intensity in front of the coaches, but a bit more care in his technique wouldn't go astray

Hence my comment he is new Viney

Saty, more care is good but I strongly believe that you play as you train and Hulett wants to impress so good on him. Next time round Watt should put him on his ar4se. As if that would happen.

Agreed. The more I saw of him last year the less excited I was. He's not tall enough to be a stay at home contested marking machine. Doesn't have much of a leap of him either. He's not quick or agile enough to be a lead up forward. He's not skilled or smart enough to be a third forward option like Watts or Petracca. I can't see him making it at AFL level. He's depth for 2 years and then delist material in my opinion.

While lots here hate him, Watts is on his way to 250+ games and already contributes to the team. Hopefully he can reproduce his form from last yearly improve further. If he does then he's in our top 5 players yet again.

I'm a big fan of Hannon. I watched a few VFL games last year and he looked a lively prospect. I'm not sure if he was injured but I was surprised he wasn't given a run during the JLT series. I think he provides some X-factor, which is exactly what our forward line lacked over the pre-season.

I doubt he's in the coaches minds for round 1 but I'm sure we'll see him at some stage this year.

I assume he was still waiting for his teeth to set.....

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
