The thing about leadership is that leaders lead, they don't need a title or permission they just do it. Lewis will lead because he is a leader regardless of being voted into the LG in a popularity contest.

I think some players just need to focus on their game, and be the best they can be.  The likes of Jetta fits that category in my view.  He's the unofficial leader of our indigenous boys (albeit not a huge group), so that's an important role for him.  I mean all that in a "nice, lovey-dovey" way, not a "Jetta's not a leader" way!

At this stage I would have the likes of Watts and Tyson in said group.

That's all it needs to be (I would actually give Vince the opportunity to decide if he wants to be in it or not).

Lewis doesn't need to be in the top 2 positions to still be able to use his voice.  I'm sure any player is encouraged to speak up at any time, especially if they are walking the talk.

I am with BBPowell. The leadership group should be restricted to no more than 3  - captain, vice, deputy vice - to lead by example and provide encouragement at training and on the field. Nathan Jones, Jack Viney and Max Gawn. The players and supporters would follow them anywhere. I know I would.

In addition, some players are worthy of being appointed as on field leaders - T Mac backs, Jordan Lewis midfield and Jack Watts forwards - to have the coaches authority to direct team mates during the match on positioning, match ups and filling gaps. They are mature, key players who should have an understanding of what is required in matches.

Keep it simple.

Captain and Vice Captain should be enough. The rest should step up and be a leader in there own right.

It's an understandable stance, but reality is, there will be a leadership group, so best you start thinking of a few other players to add to the list!

I'd like it to be a small but tight group of Jones, Lewis, Vince (he needs to take control of games next year given his age and games experience), T-Mac, Jetta and Viney.

Gawn was in the leadership group last season and I'd be extremely surprised not to see him in it for 2017 after the year he just had.

I however want to see him empowered. For the very reasons each of you are concerned about the Co-Captaincy piece, ironically I think it's a good idea. What I would not like to see is for Lewis not talk to the group at the huddle at 3/4 time in a tight final even though:

- he should because he has stacks of experience in such a situation but doesn't want to be seen to be usurping Jones' authority as Captain; and

- Jones himself would probably want Lewis to talk to the group but doesn't want to appear to the player group as an impotent Captain in the circumstances.

Having Lewis as a Co-Captain negates this. Think about it.

We are developing club with aspirations to play finals, and not just one of them. Our leaders including Jones have little to no experience in this zone. Lewis has it in spades.

And I want him, and others like Jones, to feel that they have unrestricted access to that knowledge and experience. I suspect Jones would actually be slightly relieved with such an appointment. It's no slight on him, just recognition that we have a new Centurion in the group who needs to be properly empowered for the benefit of everyone.

One cannot under-estimate the importance of Lewis to our future success in the coming years. Let's just embrace it.

 

Goodwin floated the idea near the end of last year. It's not a ridiculous idea at all. If the players and coaches feel Jones and Lewis would lead them well in a battle, giving them both the title doesn't diminish what Jones has worked for. He's still the captain of the club and Lewis is a genuine star of the game. I wouldn't be worried about it dividing the playing group or diminishing the respect the players/coaches have for Jones.

Hogan, Bradshaw, stretch, hunt should all be emerging leaders this year. 

 

I agree with with most that jack Viney is our next captain, but I reckon billy stretch is a good enough character or leader to do the job and be a long term member of our leadership groups when you look at his training habits, desire to learn and willingness to play to his role and the game plan over individual glory. A coaches dream

How do you know this? I know many in the footy world where shocked when Bernie's best mate Tex Walker was named Crow's skipper ahead of Dangerfield and Sloane. Inside the Adelaide club it was a matter of when and not if Tex got the job. My point is, how would any of us really know who is regarded as a leader by the players at MFC???
