He's young and he's done something silly, he'll cop a spray from Goody and the leadership group, cop whatever punishment they give on the chin and move on and learn from it. 

not sure what the extra punishment will/should be, but it's a good opportunity to turn it into a positive 

 

When it comes to punishment - why do we need to take a punitive stance? Quite frankly I don't think he needs to leadership group or Goodwin etc to tell him to pull his head in - you reckon he doesn't get it already - and that the 'penny' will drop if someone else mentioned it to him?? The reality is, that he either will, or he won't commit to the behaviours to becoming as elite as he can... it will be an ongoing analysis over the seasons on this -  and this incident will have SFA to do with it.

That's best case scenario and there are a lot of assumptions in there.  He has a lot to prove to the club, his teammates and the supporters.

Well im quite annoyed. Firstly what made him think it was ok to get behind the wheel after drinking. I do not care if he had just 1 drink. The rule states for everyone if you are on your p plates its 0 limit. So have no idea what he was thinking and is passengers with him should have also known better. 

Its just lucky he didnt cause a major accident which could have had disastrous consequences. 

Hope he learns from it and pull his head in.

Seems a pretty shallow way of looking at it.  The leadership group are there to set a precedent, not just for Oliver, but for the playing group as a whole.  Yes, it is up to Clayton to learn from this, but if he got that this wasn't the right way to act already, then he wouldn't have done it.  He needs to be told to pull his head in.

The leadership group will give him a punishment that they believe not only fits the crime but sets the standard for everyone else as well.

He's 19, and 18 months ago he would have been psyched to get invited to the draft combine, or grab a rookie spot. Some people forget how far back he was. He wasn't a certainty like a lot of other kids who go through Academies and are in a system from 15. He's had a big 12 months.

He made a mistake, the leadership group will deal with it, and then like any other citizen who has been punished by the relevant authorities he deserves a chance to be able to get on with. 

Remain calm folks. 

Stupid. Zero means zero. The off season can be risky when young blokes get back with their mates.

The kid will learn. 

When I think of the things I was up to at his age and later I can't judge him. If it was in season that would be different but as bad boy behaviour goes this is at the lighter end.

The real question is whether footballers are subjected to higher standards than their equivalent non playing mates.

I think we all know the answer to that and therefore this is an irresponsible and disappointing event.

Some punishment over and above the legal fines etc is justified.

Clarrie is a smart footballer as well. I was more referring to life skills and the way Whitnall wasted his talent by neglecting his fitness. His career should have been much better than it turned out to be.

When I was his age I was pulled over by a nice policeman in Hoddle st. I was a bit drunk, stoned as well, with a car load of girls (and boys) all happy as Larry.

He said that I should leave the car and that we should all get a taxi home. That was it. 1971.

I know things are different now .

All that year the police in Carlton would stare at us as we produced our drivers licenses...laughing our heads off......tripping on acid. You could see the cops thinking....."they're not drunk....??..young people are weird."

It had a very strong effect on the offender.

Absolutely an idiot.  How many years has it taken to establish the 'no [censored]' policy at MFC?  Well, it's possible that we have a [censored] in the making.  Of course, the Leadership group needs to reinforce that there can be no exceptions and all players are subject to sanctions if they cross a line.  I'm not suggesting that we trade him because of this but I would be making it absolutely clear that any further breaches will result in much more serious consequences.  For those who think this is just a stupid, immature boy and that he shouldn't be punished, I disagree.  He is now a professional footballer and needs to show that he can repay the faith that the club has shown in him.  With regard to Hodge, I cant't remember the details but I think he's probably done a bit more to earn the right for forgivwness.  Oliver certainly hasn't so far.

Jeeze harsh on the bloke much? We all made mistakes when we were that age and no I'm not defending his actions, it was stupid and could've been a hell of a lot worse but FMD give him a chance to redeem himself before you go saying we have a possible [censored] in the making.

Everything I've heard about him around the club is that he's a good bloke and well liked by the boys, he's got a big future ahead of him and I'm not just talking about his football career. He's young he's stuffed up, the leadership group will act appropriately and I'm sure will make every effort that not only this won't ever happen agin with him but for a very long long time at the MFC (I'm realistic enough to know that it will happen again some time in the future). Someone please tell me the last time we had a player pulled over for drink driving at our club? We had a mostly good record with these kinds of infringements so before we go crazy thinking Clayton has ruined the "no flogs" policy lets just take some deep breaths.

Kayne Turner from North copped a 4 week ban for drink driving so it's not out of the realms of possibility that Oliver could be on the sidelines for the start of the home and away.
