Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

It just seems so far out of left field, this whole scenario. Mitchell and now potentially Lewis.

I hope it is a 2 plus club option on the 3rd.

Presume it will be a Mitchell-ian deal.

I have some doubts about wisdom of a 3 year deal but he would be joining a much deeper midfield than he played in this year and one which spreads the contested ball load rather than relying on just him and Sam Mitchell.

Can he play mid/half forward?

Current pick status is:

Hawthorn: 10, 57, 68, 70, 88, 90, 108, 126
Melbourne: 29, 48, 66, 84, 102, 120

Can't see us giving up pick 29.  So the discussion is 48, 66, 84.

Of course Hawks want 48 at least, to save face.

By all accounts the Hawks (except apparently the Board after supporter agitation) are happy for him to go.  And, given that Mitchell went for 88 one would think it is 66 or 84.

I could see a swap of 48 for 57 or 68 happening.

I think they might be mulling over whether Melbourne can trade 48 to the Hawks in exchange for Lewis and that coveted pick 88 back from the Hawks.

Then we can move pick 88 on to the dockers for Nat Fyfe

True, and also:

If (as is being suggested) he comes to us on a 3 year deal, it should be obvious that over the course of those three years he'll be playing less and less midfield time and more time forward. (And bench perhaps).

It's obvious that he'd provide protection and cover for Oliver, Petracca and Brayshaw as they get their fitness levels up to elite AFL midfield standard.

Lewis is a very capable forward and because of this versatility you'd see a nice and easy transition with someone like Trac for instance.

Let's say next year Lewis and Trac both play 50/50 mid/forward time under the same rotation. Then in 2018 when Trac has again gone to another level of fitness he'll play 60/40 mid/forward time with Lewis playing 40/60. Etc.

I know this is obvious to most, but it's a response to the same posters complaining about not wanting the MFC to be a 'retirement home' or that he'll be getting in the way of 'developing our young players' etc etc.

I suspect it will be pick 66 which is a fair deal. Mitchell, whilst a better player, is 1-2 years playing and was first pushed out the door. Lewis will be 2-3 years playing and is not being pushed now that Mitchell is out. Have a look at the hit rate of clubs between 66-75 in the draft and consider the maturity and leadership benefits of a player like Lewis and what Brayshaw, Trac and Oliver alone will learn from him. Then instead of considering him as an ageing star note that he averaged 26 touches and finished 2nd in a finals team B&F whilst we still had Bugg, M Jones, Grimes, Michie, Newton play 33 games combined for us in a relatively injury free year.

This is without considering that he is a proud player with a point to prove in 2017 who WANTS to come and pull on the red and blue.

Only MFC supporters could whine about this.

Are Port still in the AFL?

After the Hartlett fire sale fell thru they have gone to ground... Licking wounds?  Imploding?  Getting ready to fire up again?

They are supposedly desperate to get into the draft; current picks: 9, 49, 67, 85, 103, 121.  I wouldn't be surprised if they start wheeling and dealing with GCS who will have a juicy set of first round picks to offload.  GCS current picks: 4, 8, 22, 24, 26, 30, 44, 62, 80, 98, 116. They will get 6 and 10 for Prestia and O'Meara then give (say 10) for Hanley.

So GCS then have 4, 6, 8 in the first round and are known to want midfielders!  Also, the middle picks (draft points) they have will get them their Academy player so taking the the first round picks to the draft is a 'waste' for them...

SEN did mentioned whispers about Ollie Wines during the week but didn't follow up.  Would be insane if Port let him go but would they if they could 2 get top 10 picks for him?

Note: this is complete and total hypothesising on my part - Saturday entertainment  But Port is desperate and have been quite for too long and something is brewing...

Port are in just as much trouble as Richmond, the only real difference is that they're outside VIC and don't get quite as much attention here.

they are overrating their list and coach, they have no plan or identity as a team and they're going nowhere.

i've also heard not everyone there is as keen on Boaks captaincy style as Hinkley i.

they've locked a bunch of overrated players on long term deals that noone else will touch

Exactly why they are desperate!  And desperate people do desperate things! It may not be Ollie but wouldn't be surprised to see one of their better mids head to where the sunshine is!

GCS will be agitating for mids from somewhere - they have too many picks (vs list spots) to take to the draft and they don't need their 1st rounders to get their Academy players.  Later draft points will do.

Will keenly watch what they do.

How about

Hibberd for next years 2nd round (they made us wait for Melksham, let's make them wait)

Lewis for this years 3rd round

Rockliff for this years 2nd round

Would love Rockliff, he is a gun. That would be an amazing trade period in my view, unsure if it will happen but let's see

Rockliff is a loose cannon, they can't give him away.

No thanks.

Lewis is going to be a awesome get I also really want to see us go hard for Rockliff. A midfield consisting of Rockliff, Jones, Viney, Vince, Tyson, Brayshaw, Trac, Lewis, and Oliver (i probably missed a few) is so menacing.. I believe Hunt and Stretch can become our classy quick out side mids.

Our midfield would be one of the deepest in the league and I doubt we would lose the contested possessions in many games next year with that line up.

The trade I would do would be 2016 second pick plus Vandenberg and Dunn to brisbane for Rockliff and their 4th pick.

And my line up would look something like this...

FB Jetta  tmac  hibbard

HB Vince Omac Salem

C   Stretch Jones Hunt

HF Kent Watts Trac

FF Brayshaw Hogan Garlett

F  Gawn  Lewis  Viney

B Rockliff  Oliver Tyson Melksham

Just out of interest, does anyone have any specifics on Rockliff has allegedly done to earn this rep ? Is he a complete dirtbag of a bloke or perhaps just nit a very good captain ?

I would do that but think Lewis may have killed any interest we may have had for Rockliff.

Same. He's been a star but I don't fancy him coming here to top up his super

Unless of course there is a mutually beneficial tidying of the lists. Straight swap for Dunn

Quoting myself is poor form but I've swung around on this now that the Lewis reasons for coming are clearer.

If we can get him for a third round pick we would be laughing. As good as Vince & Jones are, I think the likes of Clarry, Trac, JV, 'Gus and Dom would benefit greatly from a couple of years in the trenches with Lewis. So we'd get a ready made first 18 player & on-field coach. Rather than an impediment to development, he's a 2 year investment in improving our young mids.

He fits in with our "competitors only" ethos - he's as fierce as anyone going around. I suspect he would come with a point to prove so rather than topping up his super as I suggested earlier, he would give everything he's got.

Others have outlined his playing attributes so rather than restate them, I'll just offer up the following. If you were picking the side for next year Round 1, Tommy Bugg or Jordan Lewis ?

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
