VETERAN Brent Harvey admits he’s “flat and sad” after being axed by North Melbourne for 2017, but says he holds no grudges against the club or coach Brad Scott.

In his first public statement since he, along with Drew Petrie, Nick Dal Santo and Michael Firrito, were told by the Kangaroos he wouldn’t be recontracted for next season, Harvey said he was disappointed not to be playing into a 22nd season at North.

But the 38-year-old assured Roos fans that he had great empathy for Scott and others at the club that had to make the tough calls.

“Right now, I feel a bit flat and sad because I won’t be playing at North Melbourne next year. But that was always going to be the case no matter when my career at Arden Street ended,” Harvey said via his social media accounts.

“I know there are a lot of angry and disappointed fans out there and I love you all for your passion and care for me in this situation.

“But I need you all to know that I’m ok with what’s happened.

“It’s okay to feel upset, Brad and those in charge had a tough decision to make. I’m not angry at them about it at all, and have been in footy long enough to understand how it all works and that no individual is ever, bigger than the club.

“More than anything, I appreciate Brad’s honesty because I put him in a difficult situation when I asked to know where I stood. He did the right thing and told us all the truth. “

Harvey said he and the three other players were given the opportunity to address the media on Wednesday but all opted not to.

“I would have broken down and didn’t want to do that. I want to be clear that is wasn’t because we were angry, like some people are suggesting,” Harvey said.

“When the time is right, I will speak but I’m not sure when that will be.

“While this is hard for all of us, it’s important that we don’t lose sight of what’s in front of us. Finals are just around the corner and rest assured, we will do everything we can to win. We’d all like nothing more than to go out on a high.”

Harvey said he hadn’t had a chance to consider his playing future beyond this season.

Alot of GWS players  have praised Johnson for his leadership and guidance and i have no doubt the fresh start has really helped his football this year. Johnson has won games for the Giants this year and i could see Harvey doing the exact same for us next year.

Another big hole is our experience. Can't continue to rely on Jones and Vince to carry us and lead. Need another voice to help them out.

 

This is a good point. Harvey almost got the Roos over the line against the Swans on the weekend. As much as I hate him, the more I read here, the more I think he wouldn't be such a bad idea.

I would take him for 12 months as he has skill and pace to burn. Also has slotted 30 odd goals this year which is another decent effort.

I can promise that a lot of the anger built up against him on this thread would be removed the first game he plays well in a close win where he kicks 3 or 4

We recruited our most hated player of all time - Gary Moorcroft in 02/03. If we traded for Moorcroft we can trade for anyone.

His age is undeniably irrelevant in this case. 

So I wish people would shut the fark up about us 'not being a retirement home'.

Cross provided a huge amount for our club but was clearly battling away toward the end. Harvey's skill-level and general impact on game-day is miles ahead of Cross's and that's not to pot shot on Daniel because he was a huge role model at the club.

Harvey would fast track our development without one iota of a doubt, provide further protection so that young guys can continue to develop at Casey for a couple of years and also make a genuine impact onfield come game-day.

When will people realise that we need more than Jones and Vince as players who have 150 + games experience in our starting 22? We need more leadership and experience. We're desperate for it.

Posters that wouldn't want Harvey because of some pathetic 'annoyance' factor are clueless. Absolutely and utterly clueless. The same ones who if in charge would still be playing Sylvia, Jamar, Howe, Garland, Frawley.

It's incredible. Emotional bias is like a [censored] disease around these parts.

One of the reasons we got Lamumba was because of his resilience. There were never questions about his fitness and look at him now.  Harvey may currently be bullet proof but any injury that might put him out of the game for say 4-6 weeks will surely finish him. Just like the stereotypical old codger who defies old  age and is fit as a fiddle until he catches a cold and drops off the perch.

Nobody can forecast injuries, mental illness or any other event that occurs.

Every decision, trade, recruitment, draft and 'drive to training' has a risk attached.

And what you're pointing out couldn't be further from the truth. He is a 38 year old man with a working body that defies the number attached. Harvey is almost bullet-proof when it comes to soft tissue injuries simply because of the amount of uninterrupted training he has been able to do. Pre-season upon pre-season upon pre-season. Does it mean he won't get injured? Of course not. But these are all things that are weighed up when making a call on a player. His age is [censored] irrelevant mate. Everyone knows it.

If you're so worried about that sort of nonsense as well as the Lamumba one which clearly nobody saw coming then you must literally have no finger nails knowing the following: Brayshaw and Jetta are one or two concussions away from potentially being advised to stop playing the game. Petracca doing his knee again, Jesse and Jayden succumbing to their back injuries again and Salem never being able to overcome his Thyroid problem.

But this is the kind of talk I don't understand.

You and others seem incapable of being able to identify the clear differences in our our list to theirs. Namely, age and experience. North have the oldest list in the competion, (or thereabouts). 

Do you really think that their decision to move Harvey on  is on the back of being worried that his body won't hold up next year? Srsly.

Like all well run clubs who have an ageing list profile, they systematically start moving on older players, (even if they're still playing great footy) so they can regenerate in a way that saves them from bottoming out. Have you been paying attention to Geelong at all over the last couple of years? 

Stevie J, Chapman, Kelly. They all went on to play at other clubs. And Harvey's body and form is better than all of those three who have contributed positively for their new sides.

The fact is this: If Harvey decides to play on elsewhere next year, he WILL contribute positively in many ways at whichever club picks him up. And there will be clubs that want him.

And I hope we're one of them.

Whilst looking at a Harvey or even a Dal Santo type the MC would have to look at the choices they would otherwise make instead of recruiting this type of player ... with regards to this type of player we know that the salary can't be large, the player has to be absolutely fair dinkum about playing on and we also know that it can only be a short term thing as well.

The other important facet is where the MC sees the clubs list right now ... we've got an extremely young list and we could do with some real experience in the short term in a type of 'bridging' fashion.  But that experience must have previously been of a decent quality.  Many of our current experienced players can't get a game and any number of those experienced players are facing an uncertain future.  So we could replace 'like for like' for 2 or 3 of those players rather than bringing in 7 or 8 more youngsters.

Previously this current football dept has brought in many players who have had 2-4 years in the system or have been mature-age recruits - apart from a few misses that didn't cost the club a great deal (e.g. Georgiou & Riley) the results have been quite good to very good from an overall perspective (so far)  When recruiting in this sort of way the strike rate can rarely be great.

Here's the list of those types of players as a collective ... Tyson,  Newton,  Michie (now a rookie),  AVB (originally a rookie),  Wagner (rookie),  Georgiou (rookie),  Lumumba,  Frost,  Melksham,  Vince,  Riley,  Cross,  Bugg,  Kennedy & Garlett.  I may have missed 1 or 2 players who come under the above category.

So if the match committee do decide to go down the path of recruiting in the short term like we did with Cross, then their track record tells us that they're probably going to get it right or close to right.  It should be noted that recruiting any sort of player has a risk attachment.

I think NO but can see the benefit. He has pace (still), skill and ability to kick goals. If he lifted us into the finals, it would be a success.

It only served to prove, to me, that he adds more to a side at the age of 38 than Dean Kent does at the age of 22.  

I hate the little fella, but he would definitely add something good to our side if he decided it's where he wanted to play next year.
