Why don't they give Dunn a try up forward? Can he really be worse than ol' concrete hands Dawes? Gees!

I think ol' can't follow instructions Lynden could be considerably worse than Dawes, yes.

We need Dunn to be a good key defender again I think.  Let him concentrate on that.

No conundrum for me Dawes gone Pedersen stays

Old Dee, I think that's probably the working premise.  For a lot of people though there'd be a view that Dawes' best betters Pedersen's best.  I suspect Roos is firmly in this camp and hence the patience and persistence.  Chris has showed tantalising glimpses of what he's capable of when fit and it makes us a better outfit.  However, there's been no injury excuse in recent times - he just didn't stand up when he needed to.  Pedersen on the other hand was going along pretty consistently before being struck down with illness / injury.  Tomorrow looms large for Dawes.

I disagree. Dunn can take a mark, can kick a good goal, he isn't perfect but by god I can't watch Dawes and his Titanic like movements spud it up anymore!

Dunn is not getting a game in the backline, this could be his chance for reinvention.

I'm not sure Dunn can maintain the structure that Dawes can.

Don't get me wrong, I don't rate Dawes at all but after the St Kilda game I can see what the coaches are trying to do here.

The Eagles have belted much better teams than us in Perth this year, with only one bad game against the Crows. We are historically rank away from the MCG.

Adds up to an 80+ point loss in my book.

Yeah, no confidence at all in our kids this week. Just hope it doesn't completely destroy any remaining confidence the boys have.

I thought Roos picked players in form? Then why is Dawes in the team? Woeful footballer he should have played his last game against Adelaide, he needs to be delisted. The love affair Roos has with Dawes is amazing.

The should have thrown Spencer in the ruck (like everyone he is in better form than Dawes) and play Gawn up predominantly up forward.

Unfortunately time is up for Jack "Grimey" Grimes.  Ex-captain, terrific club man, just didn't develop into the player I'm sure he and the club were hoping for.

Concrete hands is in the team after doing NOTHING when dropped!?  WTF Roos, seriously, how can you justify this selection? If he is in form then yeah he adds something to the team but he was dropped.  What do they think his 1 game in the box when we got hammered will help him on the field?

Subi is massive. Dawes has a lot of faults but he's got a big tank for a big man. Would be bonkers playing Spencer as a key forward at subi.

His calf's are shot, he can't run constantly that's why he can't play in the ruck. Remember his chasing effort against Kreuzer last year? Dawes is in simply because Roos loves him hopefully Goodwin doesn't feel the same way.

So once again we go in a fair way behind in experience and age.

A couple of interesting things to note.

West Coast only have 1 player who has played more than 200 games but have a big chunck between 50 and 200.

West Coast are basically 2 years ahead of us in age and experience and have a similar age profile across the team, with a few more older players than we have. 2 years ago West Coast finished in 9th with 11 wins and a percentage of 116. That will probably be a win or two and 10-20 percent ahead of where we end up this year.

My tip, 7 goal loss.

I hope Vandenberg's injury doesn't preclude him from playing his next match at Casey.

I think Vandenberg's contract states that he's prevented from being omitted to Casey, and  can only play there when coming back from his constant injuries.

I don't mind him as a player but think he's had a golden run at selection over others.

Sometimes I really like your posts and your perspective on footy.  Then then other times, like this, I don't.

I'm not a Dawes fan mainly because of his inconsistency but he is capable of good key position forward play on occasions.  I reckon the FD know more than us and would have played Dunn forward if there was merit in it.  He played forward for the second half against Saints first time around and hardly touched it.  He was "hidden" there because he couldn't play the new zoning defence.

Onward and upward.  Let's hope Hulett and Weed progress quickly over the preseason.

at least some of you guys will have something to do while we are losing tomorrow.  more Bagging of Dawes.  we all know he isnt a great player but he gives his all. give it a rest

if we had a better option he would be playing.  and no, playing gawn fwd and spencer in the ruck is not a better option.  Gawn is our main weapon and spencer or dunn cant play fwd

If we can stay within 4-5 goals I'd actually take it as a win. If they play as they did against the Saints, it will be a 100-point loss. Regardless of form, it is hard to win there for any team.

A good team performance that attacks and transitions well is all I ask. Our inability to play Etihad shouldn't translate to Domain. We *should* play the ground well.

This sort of statement which several people have made puzzles me.  Surely the obvious next question is "Why would he love him?"  But the question seems to go unasked.  Leaving aside some romantic attachment or blackmail, the only sensible answer is that Roos sees that Dawes brings something of value to the team.   It's reasonable to say "I don't see what Roos sees in him" rather than this 'loves him' nonsense.  More interesting to discuss what he might see in him that you don't.

If senior experienced  players like Garland, Dunn, Dawes and Grimes could get regular games our age profile would be much higher. Why are these guys are not performing? They have been the beneficiaries of very generous contracts and their experience was supposed to be underpinning us resurgence. We are not far off where we were in 2011.

Nasher, you're on the right track here.  I don't quite understand the hysteria around Dawes being brought in.  The fact is we have 6 weeks to determine whether to offer Dawes and Pedersen contracts next year.  Dawes is fit but out of form so he gets the first look at it.  We have looked better all year with the additional big body in the forward line, particularly with Watts needing to ruck and both he and Hogan spending not inconsiderable time in defence at the end of each quarter (or to try and get some hands on the footy in Jesse's case).  McKenzie was always going to be back in and he and McGovern are big bodies.  It was never going to be an option to throw Hulett and Weideman (more so) to the wolves.  One or other may well get a game in the twilight of the season but the imperative right now is the Dawes / Pedersen contract conundrum.

I don't see how its a conundrum. Pederesen is merely there until one of Weidaman or Hullet are ready to go and that could be next year.

But lets look at Pedersen v Dawes this year, Pedersen has been able to hit the scorecard in more than one matche including 3 in one game compared to Dawes solitary goal which was also a gimme in the goal square. Dawes cant or wont play ruck meaning Watts is being thrown in there, we didn't have that issue when Pedersen was playing.

If Pedersen is doing absoltely nothing up forward we have the option of moving him back, we cant do that with Dawes, anyone remember when he pushed back against Sydney and dropped a sitter which then scored?

Pedersen after his illness now needs to fight his way back into the side where as Dawes got his spot in the initially based on OK performance in the VFL not by knocking door down. Then he gets dropped only to sit in the coaches box for a week before being recalled.

Yes playing a myriad of kids who are wet behind the ears.

In 2011 I think we won 11 games this year the best I can see is 9.

On that basis we are no better off.
