And any additional half back line quality means my boy Hunt can play more time on the wing!

He has become your boy now has he?

I'd keep him running off half back. His defensive capabilities are too good to be under utilised on the wing. I want my boy Hunt running off half back. ;)

Any money they ask for Salem, having been a bombers supporter growing up.

No chance we even entertain that.

Grimes and a third rounder? Would anyone do that deal?

I really don't know why people keep suggesting Grimes has currency in a trade. He's a free agent, soon to be a delisted free agent. No sane club would ever trade for a free agent.

Therefore, we should try to trade him to Brisbane with our third rounder.

Ah yes. My bad. I do keep doing that. Well, technically Hibberd could walk as a DFA, so could Grimes. Maybe that's where the deal lies?

Our HBF stocks are very low - Lumumba is (occasionally) okay with ball in hand, but is rubbish defensively; Salem is poor defensively and doesn't win enough of his own footy; Grimes is clearly out of favour; White and Wagner are a long way from being the finished product, although I like the look of White.

As such, we should definitely look at any one who can defend well and hurt the opposition going the other way. If Hibberd is that person, great, as he won't cost us anything.

Well done on being literally the only poster to respond positively when I first raised Hibberd's name.

Must be my lucky week for Bomber's. Wasn't especially interested in Hurley (the value thing, for me, as always), while Hibberd is serious class and pretty solid defensively too.

What is best about him from out perspective, I think, is that he is extremely consistent.

Don't want to give Inside Football too much credibility, but a look at his 'rating' numbers over the past few seasons at least points to someone who is rarely a 'losing position' on the field.

Hibberd and their 2nd pick for Salem, I would consider.

Hibberd and 19 for Salem

Salem is a gun kid with promise but Hibberd has a track record.  Plus it would get us back into the top 20 of the draft. We may need to give a 3rd or 4th back.

Not sure it is my preferred move but it is better than a straight swap of Hibberd for 28.

How?

Stuie I was really hoping to see him just simply say "decided he wishes to continue his career elsewhere" instead of all the gushing about his love for essendon and no hard feelings etc.

I think this makes it a regular trade, we need to pay for a best 22 player. Instead of a player leaving and we helping him out.

Pretty standard statement I reckon, from the usual template. Will have no influence on how the deal gets done IMO.

It's always looked like being only a slightly bargain trade, I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL has been or will be involved to prevent the possibility of it going to court and the whole thing being dragged up again.

Yeah I hope so.  Hopefully the trade goes through smoothly and marginally in our favour as a result.

It's sort of amazing because unlike previous years I don't really care; I just want the footy department to get it done and I can't wait for next year!

Same. Have massive trust in Mahoney especially now. Always thought he was ok, then he showed in last year's trade period he's actually one of the best operators around.

Nah, no way.

I'm consistently surprised how much Salem is underrated.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
