In theory as we used two in 2015, we don't need to make another first round selection until 2019 if we so choose.

Correct. If we were to trade our 2017 first round pick for say a Dion Prestia, we could not the trade our 2017 second round pick. You can't trade out two future picks from the one draft. It makes sense as it stops clubs from trading their futures away.

Geelong and Hawthorn (just to mention two) have some very good players entering the unrestricted free agency window.

These guys must be looking at topping up their retirement funds. Time to look at a little pain perhaps for some of our existing list for the benefit of long term gain.

In an ideal world we need to add one quality top up player each year for three years. The requirement (hope) is that we get 4years (2X2) out of each player with the idea that they provide a base for our youngsters as we go forward.

Cannot see us going far if we just look at players who are on the fringe of existing clubs

Time to dream perhaps !!

Found this on bigfooty on the Melbourne page and thought it was interesting..

I ran into a Melbourne listed player at uni yesterday and one of the things I talked to him about was what Melbourne needs to trade in. He said we need another ruck. I asked him about our defense and getting Hibberd and he said we didn't need him because we have enough players like that (he listed Salem, Wagner, Grimes, Milk and Hunt). He flagged that we are really interested in Prestia (didn't know we still were), I asked him about whether we need more mids and he replied with 'you can never have too many mids'.
Lovely bloke, nice enough to have a chat with me while we walked in between classes. Thought you guys might find what he said interesting, I sure did.

I definitely think we need to draft another ruck. Gawn is good enough to play up forward in a resting role, so playing more of the Dawes role (but better). Problem is, he can't do that due to lack of support. We also need an insurance policy. If he gets injured, we are done!

I used to have a few mates on lists, and one of them is still heavily involved in a footy club at admin level. The ONE certainty is that listed players are always the last to find out what the recruiting team is up to - so take this 'info' with a huge grain of salt (if you aren't already because it's from bigfooty).

Yep, agreed. And the Blues will continue to stockpile B/C graders. They're never going to win a flag that mob. They're also going to miss out on a high draft pick this year. SOS has to get everything right in the next few years and looking at his golden access to GWS and all those misses, I wouldn't be too confident if I were Carlton.

This might sound a bit strange, but I just wonder how heavily Melksham will feature in plans next year now that we've found Hunt. Hunt is a better spoiler and quicker than Melksham. It'll be interesting to see how that works. I wouldn't move Hunt off the half back flank unless the opposition find a way to blanket him (like St Kilda did) - in this instance, I'd move him forward (like we did). 

The more I think about it, the more I think we should play Melksham off half forward and utilise his speed in our press. I just wonder if Goody's plans have changed with Hunt's emergence. 

And I actually think our backline has some really good balance if you add Hibberd to Jetta, TMac, Frost, Omac and Hunt. A nice blend of pace, height, better kicking and solid one-on-one play.

I agree with you on Stretch having a place ahead of Kennedy. I'd have Jones and Vince drop to the bench, move Petracca onto a wing or into the middle and Oliver into the guts. 

I disagree with you on Salem and Jetta though. Bringing in someone like Hibberd and playing him off half back to improve our kicking efficiency and attacking stocks back there will release Salem to play a midfield or a forward role. Both roles, IMO, he's more suited to. Brayshaw could be another who plays off half back setting up play (he played there in juniors) and then with stints in the midfield. His clearance work against St Kilda showed he'll be a force to be reckoned with as will Oliver, Petracca, Viney and Tyson.

Just heard on SEN that there has been a lot of talk lately about Michael Barlow coming home to Vic (Shepparton boy) .. To which an anonymous caller (also from shepparton) confirmed and then went on to say that he has it on good authority, Barlow would be in the Red and Blue next season.

Apparently Barlow is out of contract, but is not a free agent. He'll be 29 in December.

I think I'd consider him as a free agent.. But I wouldn't give up anything less than a 4th rounder for him.

The questions is.. what's he worth? if anything? And would you want him in the red and blue?

Would add midfield experience and leadership. He is a natural midfielder who wins big numbers of the ball and would allow Bernie Vince to play that full time half back role.
