I bought a ticket just so I can see Jack run onto the MCG again.

Hope I'm not sitting amongst a trillion Hawks supporters!

Doubtful.

Cyril Kalippa was the grandfather of Daniel Rioli and he played for Richmond last night.

Sounds like he did some wonderful work for his people on Tiwi Island but I wonder why he changed his surname.

Pulled this from the ABC website. I wonder if he decided to go with his mothers surname?

CYRIL KALIPPA RIOLI: I came here (Tiwi Islands) in 1941 from Nguiu. Then the mission started. They said, "You've gotta go cos you're not a full-blood. You're going up there for a mission started for half-caste people. I was brought up by missionaries to grow up and be a decent person, you know? They gave us opportunities to go to school and to do work after school when there's a break. All sorts of sports at the same time. And that's what we took up. But I wasn't at school long enough. But at the same time, I was brought up to try and do the right thing, stay on the right track, you know, don't go off the track.

If anything it may spur him to greater heights to honour his ancestral namesake...Bernie may need to shut him down early...

If wet, the Viney out hurts, but 3 of the ins in Trengove, Oliver and VDB should all be suited to wet weather footy.

Oliver especially, with his clean hands and ability to win clearances, could be made for it.

Not sure they even have a thousand supporters in Melbourne that go to their games let alone a trillion!

Not sure what to expect today. I think we're a chance...but also can't see it happening.

Rain makes its interesting... Not sure if it suits us or not. As others have stated Viney out hurts but Trengove has been a contested machine in the VFL and we know what we'll get from Oliver & VDB

Cyril should rest to mourn his grand father.

It would be the respectful thing to do.

I have always believed that the rain (unless bucketing) brings the class and skill to the top. I dispute whether this is better for us than them.

Whenever there's talk of rain posters say that it will favour us because it brings the other teams skills down, have I missed something or would that work both ways?

Anyway, I think the Hawks are going to come out and try to physically intimidate our young team. Obviously looking forward to seeing Trengove run out with the team, absolutely fantastic. Harmes and Kent need to be switched on today, can't afford any downhill skiers. I don't think Kent can afford another ordinary game.

That's true, but where the Hawks are most punishing is their speed and ability on the outside. The wet conditions will lessen the impact of that and, in theory at least, turn it into more of a contested slog. Contested footy is not the Hawks' strength. It does happen to be one of ours, albeit without Viney.

I would think we'd be able to get on top in contested football. Our defense needs to tighten up and our mids need to cover the spread well today. Zero room for error today.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
