Its too bloody cold. It would have been a sell out if played at 2pm

I (as a Hobartian) didn't meet a single person that went "nah, not going, too cold".  Most people were pretty pumped about it.

During the game it got as low as 6 degrees.  You can't tell me it doesn't get that cold in Melbourne in the dead middle of winter.  The coldest I've ever been in my entire life was on a drizzly Saturday night at the 'G watching us get rogered by Geelong about a decade ago.

At least in Hobart you can be pretty confident it won't rain.

Not sure if anyone's ever been to that other place in Victoria, I think it's called "Mel-bern" or something, but it gets pretty cold there too.

First night back in Melbourne last night, and I had to sleep with 3 blankets. WTF is this cold?!

It is just as cold in Melbourne as it is in Tassie, and it absolutely poured all evening here.

That's funny Nasher. I was just thinking about that game a week or so ago as I reflected on the folly of the notion that rain brings poor teams and bad teams closer by virtue of the rain neutralising the skill gap. When in fact it doe the opposite.

I remember saying to a mate we had a chance of winning that game because of the rain and IIRC we got flogged by at least 80 points and barely scored at all. He said i was stupid. At the time time we were on the way to the game and stopped for a beer at the Rose Hotel in Fitzroy just as the rain came tumbling down. In a rare outburst of good sense we elected to stay  and watch the game at the Rose. Stayed dry. Beer was cold and cheap. Bar was packed. Dees got smashed.

I reckon it was more than a decade ago though.

Might not be talking about the same night binman.

I'm pretty sure it was this game I was at: http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2003/091120030808.html - was a Friday night, not a Saturday night, and the scoreline doesn't reflect the drubbing in my memory.  Looks like Geelong kicked a lot of points that day though.

I also saw Richmond get pasted by St Kilda the next night in some sort of milestone game for Nathan Burke - might have been his 300, or he'd just announced retirement?

I'm looking forward to the Freo v Bummers game... it's going to be interesting to see how Freo can lose this without being too obvious about it (if they win they will move up to 16th and lose valuable draft picks).

Wonder if one of you guys are thinking about this game, the same night as the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics.

Shocking. Shocking night. Paul Johnson kicked one of the better goals you'll see - and we only kicked 4 others!

According to this site (https://weatherspark.com/history/34069/2008/Melbourne-Victoria-Australia) it would've been a tad over 6 that night - though not necessarily at the time it was played.

Conflicted. Despise the faux club that is  GWS and its gifted drafts but would like nothing more than to see the smug Cats and their overrated coach lose once again.

Scott brothers look really ordinary in the box. Just don't seem in control and always worrying about umpiring decisions and throwing their arms around. At least Roosy gets frustrated about things we should be able to control! ;)

Easy choice, I hate Geelong more than anyone

16 frees to 8 Geelong's way. . When looking for umpire bias don't bother to go interstate. Nothing comes close to Skilled Stadium.

How may high  frees has Selwood for ducking? Counted  3 in only about 20 minutes that I have ever watched in dribs  and drabs.

Free kicks now 24 - 11. Geelong just got two 50 metre penalties to boot.

Hope Cats get up took em under 39 in a multi with the Dees to lose by less than 28 and Carton to win under 39......silver lining to a grey day i hope..

When it comes to Geelong getting a dream run from the umpires at Skilled Stadium, it is hard to go past the game in 1994. 33-17 is bad enough, but Melbourne were leading at 3/4 time and Geelong got about 14 frees in the last quarter to win them the game. The result probably saved Mal Blight's coaching career, too.

Just a lazy 15 extra free kicks to Geelong.

In a game of such professionalism surely we need to get answers on that discrepancy that are beyond 'we thought they were all there'.

Oh wait...some cheapies going to GWS all of a sudden. I'm shocked.

Umpiring does effect matches. I've seen it at Kardinia Park and I saw horrible examples of it in the last season of the Lions.

Scott and Selwood have been bleeting for weeks about the unfavourable to them, free kick difference...meekly saying they need to get better and not give so many away.  Really just a poorly disguised jibe at the umpires and it has finally paid off for them.

Comparing Stevue J's goal to Aker's. I have lived in Brisbane for 10 years so I am fully aware of what a [censored] he is, but geez, what a player.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
