I thought at first it might be believable because I have no doubt Roos has a healthy ego. Then I tried to imagine Roos sitting in a committee room with Goodwin, Rawlings, Plapp and whoever else, replying to each call for Grimes to be picked with "nah, sorry boys, he called me out on something six months ago". I can't see how people who have an interest in the team and no interest in Roos' ego would allow that to fly and I can't see Roos pulling rank on them over it.

I just can't see a zen master "ego out" meditative hugger like Roosy doing something like this, and I definitely can't see a team orientated skinny pale nice guy like Grimes pulling that kind of thing on Roosy.

Who does he know well? Grimes or Roos?

Does Roos strike you as the kind of professional who would go around telling people something like this?

Does Grimes strike you as the sort of person who would go around whingeing about something like this?

Everyone tries to make conspiracies out of these things when the reality is simple: They've decided he's not part of the future so they're not as quick to select him as other younger contracted players.

Someone related to Grimes.

It looks like you're most likely right about them moving on from him but from what I was told he loves the club but also has other things in his life he'd happily move on to aswell....

So happy for Grimes.

Hope he has a great game and stays in the side until the end of the season. He might, just might, resurrect his career. I've seen worse players do it!

I'm excited for him. He has 8 weeks to show what his football future looks like. If it doesn't pan out, so be it, but he finally his chance and I reckon the majority of the Demon faithful are right behind him.

Absolutely P-man. I'd be delighted to see him get a good run and completely turn his fortunes around.

If true, thanks for relaying the conversation.

Nothing gained from shooting a poster down for a claimed conversation with a relative of the player.

Glad he's in the team. Now everyone can back to abusing him.

I'll give it til the 20 minute mark of the first quarter before 'the usuals' call for his retirement.

Great to have him back - there is a long list of players who have saved their seemingly lost careers with only a few games to go.

There was an article on mfc website last year where Roos said everyone played 'individual' football when he arrived and he noted Grimes and Jones. They were both interested in individual stats implying not playing teamwork on the field

Jones responded in Roos 1st year and was made sole captain.  One can only assume that Grimes didn't respond, lost the captaincy and asked to work out his issues in the reserves.  Jones recently acknowledged his 'individual' performance (pre Roos) as that is all he could control when there was so much going on off field. Worked very hard at being a good team player and leader,

I can understand Jack feeling badly done by in losing the captaincy and feeling put out about playing reserves.  He is a proud man with whom the 'demotions' would not sit well.  Perhaps it was his own ego feeling bruised.

To blame his non-selection on Roos' ego is just so far fetched to be downright silly.  I think we can all see the reasons Jack (and other pre Roos) players have missed senior selection. It will be interesting to see if he plays 'individual' football or plays the 'way the coaches want', in the next few games or if he goes back to old ways.  Will also be interested to see how he plays the 'team defence' game style...his first time in the seniors since we've played this way.

Hope DL give him a few weeks before criticising as he will find the tempo faster than from Casey and if he plays wing or forward will need time to slot in with other players and style of play.

For Jack it won't be about possessions/tackles or other individual stats - it will be all about his contribution to team defence, team play and unselfish football.

Roosy might have an ego but I sincerely doubt he'd harbour a grudge for weeks on end to keep any player out of the team, let alone a quality person like Grimes. That just seems fanciful.

Whether you agree with it or not, I would think it's been purely a performance based decision up til now.

Three points.

1) Don't underestimate the power of a club doing the wrong thing by players. My kids - all girls - are so pleased for Grimesy today. They were in tears a few weeks ago when he again missed out v Collingwood. Even they can get that all clubs need to reward players who continually perform well in the VFL, otherwise the whole point of having a reserves side is lost. Do you honestly think the players don't discuss who is lucky to get a game each week and who isn't? They do, they just know they can't publicly comment on the topic as that means they are questioning the selectors which is an obvious no-no, unless you are LeBron James. Hoges is about the only one who could get away with it. I'm sure the whole team with the possible exception of Tom Bugg, who was dropped for him, would be rapt to see him finally getting a game because like us, they would have pondered why he was always the unlucky one. Roosy alluded to the pressure he and his selectors were under to play Grimesy two weeks ago and it finally won out.

2) Roos holding a grudge. Hocus. It's our gamestyle change that has cost him. Grimes is the victim this year of a direct decision by the coaches (Goody more directly) who have placed copying the Adelaide/WB run and carry style as a priority - the same philosophy that demands pace and has seen the exclusion of Trengove, Newton, Dunny, Pedo, Garland and this week cost Bugg his spot. In previous years, the lack of depth meant there was very few options so some courageous guys like Crossy got games, but this year with our new game style, we have pushed a few of the old guard out. Next year the same may happen to Tyson and even Bernie Vince - although that probably depends on whether we recruit Prestia a bit. Even now Nat Jones lack of pace is an issue to the style, but he has smarts and is a strong tackler - as shown last week when he went back to defence in the last quarter, where his lack of pace could have been exploited but wasn't because of his wisdom. But here's my take on it. Even Adelaide and WB have a mix of speedy players and smart slower players - Matt Boyd and Kyle Cheney are cases in point. You need a balance. The old heads at Hawthorn are mixed in with the pace of Smith, Hill, Rioli, Beust and Hartung. Grimes showed pre-season he was mega fit by coming second to T-Mac. He isn't line-breaking quick, but he is quick enough, and endurance fit enough, to get to any contest. The other factor to consider in this obsession with speed is that some players who are quick, don't have the confidence to take the game on - 28-year-old Matt Jones is a case in point. If you have a look at the Adelaide replay, watch his fear in the third term when he chose not to line-break, handballed sideways forcing Hunt to have to try and break two tackles - culminating in a turnover and an Adelaide goal.

3) St Kilda game is the key for Grimes future. Let's face it. Freo have half their side out, so we should win tomorrow and barring several major tactical blunders by Grimesy, which I very much doubt, we are unlikely to make more than two changes the following week, if any. So Grimesy will play his 100th at Etihad. Given the ground is a speed test and St Kilda were too quick for us last time, it will be the classic occasion for the selectors (and some D'Lers) to aportion an unfair share of the blame on to Grimes for a loss. The only thing that might save him is that we actually win and once again the selectors feel they can't drop him. That means they have to take him to Subi - the other ground that exploits lack of pace (remember Newton last year). If he gets through that without Goody and co saying he's too slow, then he deserves a public apology by Roosy, Goody and the match committee. But my guess is that they'll axe him after the Saints game on the pretext that they wanted to get games into the kids - meanwhile Matt Jones will stay in the side! Grimesy will then most likely play the rest of the season in the VFL, be among the best in the VFL grand final, and be traded to Richmond for a fourth rounder, where he will become a reliable, but not amazing, role player.

How's Melksham going this year?

I'd be very disappointed if a player who can actually take the field was being kept out of the team for an entire season because he'd been written off a year in advance for the sake of keeping a clear path for an imported player serving a drug cheating ban who isn't even permitted to attend training.

Clear enough?

Melksham can't play this year due to being banned, he is still a better player than Grimes though.

You're not that thick to think they put a line through Grimes at the start of the year no matter what, surely?

While I'm not sure they would have done it with Grimes I suspect Terlich got a line through his name about round 3 last year (if not earlier). That said I think Matt Jones was an inch away form the same but a solid preseason and suddenly he is in our best 22

That's what I'm talking about. I'm sure there's players that the coaches had as likely gone at the start of the year, but they're not that obtuse that they would just chuck them out no matter they're form. Grimes has got a game, Jetta and M.Jones are also examples of this. There's some silly comments kicking around today about Roos that indicate a fair few don't understand he's a professional at the highest level of his industry, not a school kid picking sides at recess.

No it will happen when he kicks out on the full as usual or switches across fileld for a classic Melbourne turnover goal

Hope he plays well and takes the game on because he will be under the microscope

Looking forward to seeing him play again

Tremendous that Jack is getting a game.  He's been playing a similar midfield role at Casey to the Bugg role and while Bugg's form was good he was holding Grimes out - that makes perfect sense to me, no conspiracy no injustice.  I think we may find that there's only a place for one of Bugg, Trengove and Grimes in the 22 in the future.  I wasn't that enthused about Trengove and Bugg both in the team and I think Matt Jones (type) replacement for one of them gives us a more versatile midfield.  Now it makes sense with Bugg's form decline, Grimes is replacing him.  Personally in the long run I hope Trenners can own this role.

I'll call it now, he won't be at the club next year. Look who is currently not playing, it's great he'll get his 100 games and in all honesty I hope he plays well but his time at the club is up. Even if he's offered a contract it won't guarantee him a game. At his age he's best of making the switch to another club.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
